To complain about school

DS is in year 8 and his regular English teacher wasn't there today so the head of English taught them. Since its hot she opened a fire door which leads out to metal steps. DS had a headache and asked to stand outside and the teacher refused. Apparently he kept asking and the teacher said she wasn't letting him out. She told him if he was really ill to go to the office so be did and I've had to collect him. He now admits he doesn't feel ill but he did have a headache which he feels would have been fine if he'd been allowed out! Aibu? The teacher shouldn't have kept him in should she?

Yabu,
Ds complained of feeling ill at school, got told to wait until lunch time, an hour layer he was being taken to hospital by ambulance as he had a febrile convulsion, How were school supposef to know your Ds was swinging the lead.

ShatnersBassoon · 28/05/2012 14:02

YABU, a metal fire escape has never cured a headache.

CailinDana · 28/05/2012 14:04

YABU. Your son was acting the maggot in class and you want to complain about the teacher handling it appropriately. Good luck with that!

BettySwollocksandaCrustyRack · 28/05/2012 14:04

YABU! Can you imagine if she let him out - they would all be saying they felt ill and wanting to go outside! She was totally in the right telling him if he felt ill to go to the office

I would be furious too if I had to go and get my DS from school for a headache! I hope you have suitably reprimanded him for that....I would be charging him my lost wages!

tethersend · 28/05/2012 14:05

Nobody is allowed to stand on a fire escape, even if it could cure cancer.

EBDTeacher · 28/05/2012 14:12

I doubt that teacher was allowed to prop the fire door open for health and safety reasons, but she did so for the benefit of the slowly roasting children.

She probably would have been shot if SMT/ a H&S boffin had seen a kid standing at the top of the fire escape.

If you complain she will get rollocked and never prop open the fire door again and your DS will be even hotter next time he has to work in there. Your call.

1950sHousewife · 28/05/2012 14:20

Grin @ tethersend. I like your reductivism there.

CrispyCod · 28/05/2012 14:24

Had he fallen from the fire escape then you would have had something to complain about.

squeakytoy · 28/05/2012 14:26

He now admits he doesn't feel ill but he did have a headache which he feels would have been fine if he'd been allowed out

hmmmm.... your little darling was trying to pull a fast one, and instead of complaining to the school, perhaps he should stay indoors in a cool darkened room, which will do a lot more for helping a headache than being able to stand in bright sunshine would!

Hopefullyrecovering · 28/05/2012 14:29

Are you serious, OP?

Primafacie · 28/05/2012 14:33

This is a joke, right?

If not, OP YAB Ridiculous and Crazy!

FireOverBabylon · 28/05/2012 14:34

Sorry OP but the only part in your post where the teacher was unreasonable was in propping open the fire door, as it's illegal. Wink

landofsoapandglory · 28/05/2012 14:38

How would standing outside in the bright sunshine and blazing heat help a headache?

I wouldn't be complaining to the school, I would be bollocking my DS for telling lies and getting me to collect him from school when there is nothing wrong with him!

Salmotrutta · 28/05/2012 14:42

I wonder if the OP had already complained before posting ....?

If so, the staffroom will get a laugh out of it.

DollysDrawers · 28/05/2012 14:45

Are you serious OP? God I hope I never become one of those parents who complains to the school every time one of my little darlings doesn't get their own way.

squeakytoy · 28/05/2012 14:45

I think there is a difference between a fire door and a fire escape door you know... a fire door is to block the spread of a fire, and yes, should be kept closed, but a fire exit is a completely different matter.

When I was at school doing my exams, it was very hot weather and we were in the gym, with the fire escape doors open to let air in. I dont think it is illegal to have a fire escape door open.

clam · 28/05/2012 14:47

Fire doors should be kept closed.
Fire exits can be opened in order to, you know, exit from a fire? or a dull lesson.

LentillyFart · 28/05/2012 14:48

He feels the headache would have been fine if he'd been allowed to stand out on the fire escape? I've read some pish in my time but that surely takes the award for the pishiest pish ever!
Imagine the thread title if he'd falled down the fire escape? Nah - this is a crock and if you're not making it up, which I think you are, then your precious little medical professional needs to be told his horoscope and you need a nice bit cup of reality juice.

Salmotrutta · 28/05/2012 14:50

Ah! Maybe the OP is the DS?

Full of righteous indignation at not being allowed to leave a lesson when it suits him?

hobnobsaremyfavourite · 28/05/2012 14:53

OP YABVVVVVU

Laquitar · 28/05/2012 14:55

I thought you are going to say that she let him go outside and the sun made his headache worst and he fall on the metal steps.

Imo it would be wrong to let him stand in the sun with headache.

Teachers can never win it seems. I wouldn't like to do their job and have parents complaining for things like this.

SauvignonBlanche · 28/05/2012 14:55

YABU!
You'd be mad to complain. You need to have a word with your DS though.

lambethlil · 28/05/2012 14:59

YAButterlyU (Thanks1950sHW)
Your little brat darling didn't get his own way and you were inconvenienced by having to collect him.

I'd be cross with him not the teacher

ArielThePiraticalMermaid · 28/05/2012 15:00

You know that if you complain about this, there will be many eyes which roll in exasperation and you will get a reputation as a PITA parent, don't you? How is standing outside in the sun going to cure an headache? He's not made of china presumably - teachers have to teach through headaches, cleaners have to clean, nurses have to nurse etc.

NarkedPuffin · 28/05/2012 15:02

Grin Tethers

I would pay for a book of your wisdom.
