I hate my new house

Is that unreasonable?

We moved in yesterday. It is dark, dingy, grimy and feels like I'm in some holiday cottage which needs a good clean before you can really start the holiday. We already paid a lot for it but now we're in it's obvious I'm going to have to start throwing money at it to bring it to our standard. Daft things like sockets aren't in straight are driving me bananas. Big cracks where cupboards etc were that will need fixing. Almost every room and corridor needs to be painted. And none of my furniture fits where it was supposed to.

The house I left was immaculate, why have I spent more on a house that's less nice and more bother?

Presumably you moved, and bought this house, because you wanted more space or it was more convenient for work/school/whatever? You must have liked it when you viewed it? And, also, presumably you realised you were going to have to spend money on the new house to get it to the way you want it?

Really, don't worry about the re-decorating, or whether things 'fit' for the moment. Give yourselves a little time to settle in. Don't get cross with the new house.

Moving into somewhere new is always unsettling.

I know what you mean, my house was like this (at least bits of it were). The hall was the worst, and that's the bit we sorted last. The pleasure is in making it your own.

Am assuming this is all just superficial stuff?

Once it's cleaned you will feel a trillion times better. It's just the icky feeling of knowing the dust is someone else's skin dust and that other people's poo is lurking under the toilet rim.

It takes ages to feel like a new place is yours.

FWiW I there was loads of stuff I didn't notice until I moved in here.

Doors hung wonky, cheapo laminate that looked horrible, no loft insulation, crap electrics, bathroom a bit manky and nicotine stains on the window frames.

It can all be sorted

I felt like that in this house for about a year. I like it better now I have ripped out all the offending parts, the kitchen, the bathrooms, the bedrooms, the floors, the fire......

I felt just like this when we moved about a month ago. I couldn't stop crying! But I feel better now - I was just homesick and it took a little while to get things in order, just give it time.

We had fleas that jumped as far as your knee caps when we moved into our first flat. Ewww.

With all their stuff in it it really didn't look this bad. Plus they didn't clean it at all so it looks even worse. Have spent the morning washing the kitchen walls (until I have time to paint them) and it already looks a lot better. As does the bathroom now I've thoroughly cleaned it.

The dark thing - the previous owners colours of paints are not maximising the light available, I was aware of this after viewings and think I can fix it, already had the paint bought before we moved in. But it's been raining and grey so that isn't helping.

It's largely superficial stuff, like the ceilings need to be overboarded and skimmed in all main rooms, they all need fully painting. What I didn't realise was that the kitchen and main bathroom also need to be painted and that there were some cracks in these rooms like need filling and sanding.

Why did we buy it? More space, of course. It was very much a head over heart buy and DH drove it which I suppose is telling of the way I feel now. I'm aware he feels awful that I found it so awful yesterday and am trying my best to be positive.

It's just painful when you spent time making the house in look lovely, then have to leave it for more space...and start all over again. I actually could have cried when we walked in for the first time to a dark, dusty shell.

I need a slap with a wet fish, right?

I think its because you have moved out of a home and into a house. It takes time to make a place feel like your own.

Actually the toilets were clean. The rest of it has so far turned out to be superficial dirt. Like, they stopped caring when they sold it and didn't bother much after that, rather than years and years of ingrained dirt.

No you don't you just need time to settle.

Moving is very stressful, I lived in my last house for 10 years, it took a good year before like I felt this place was really home.

When we moved into this house from our flat, I kept hearing our sons upstairs and thinking "bloody noisy neighbours". It took me ages to adjust to having a whole house. I even felt scared going upstairs in the dark

I still miss our last house. If it had been just a bit bigger we'd still be there.

However, this one is twice the size and with teenagers I'm glad of the space.

It's not my forever house though.

OP I completely sympathise. I HATE my new house. I put it on the market after a month but no one wanted to buy it because it's so crap! I have calmed down about it a bit more now but meh. I just need to make it my own I guess.

Like other people have said, you'll feel better after a good clean and everything is properly unpacked. Put your own stamp on it and re-evaluate the situation when the weather isn't so grim as the darkness in the house isn't going to help how you feel.

I know exactly how you feel !

In the same situation exactly , except we moved in March , so have already made a start .

Bathrooms had used bath mats in them ( boak ) White wall tiles were orange ( boak ) taps were slimy . DDs bath had pubes in it .

Kitchen cupboards had apparently been bleached ( but hadn't even been emptied . )

I could go on , but if I just say they had 2 White cats ....

However , we made a long list , cleaned, scrubbed , had someone round to look at windows etc and have made some progress .

We will get the house the way we want it , so will you .

Feeling your pain. When we moved here the house looked ok, we knew we'd have to do something about lethal artexed walls and horrible bathroom, but weren't prepared for mankyness.
Been here 10 years and it's lovely now (or will be on Monday when I finally get the carpet they left in the lounge replaced!)
It takes time and a lot of elbow grease but I'm sure it'll be worth it and hopefully it won't take you 10 years!
