So the headline on ahem 'The Sun' is 'JESSIE GAY'

(disclaimer - mother works in newsagents, not a paper I would read)

AIBU to think 'it's 2012, who the hell cares?' by having such a massive headline it makes it seem like its some massive secret thing, like it's a huge shocking thing!

I just think its not a big deal... Or at least it shouldn't be sensationalist headline material. People are allowed to be gay ffs. (I don't know if it's true having not read the article but really... What does it matter?! I'll still buy her music because sexual preference does
Not affect her voice!)

Don't know why it got me so wound up but really... AIBU to think it shouldn't be a front page headline?

Entirely agree. I thought this was common knowledge anyway- I think she has spoken about liking men and women. It sticks in my craw when we try to tell out children that being gay is entirely normal and worthy of no mention and then you get this kind of shock horror headline

Saw the Sun earlier (in the supermarket, before anyone thinks I read it). It said JESSIE GAY, SIMON not GAY.

It's because in showbiz world it's more acceptable to be a gay man, albeit a very specific type of gay man, camp, bitchy, funny etc. than to be a shock, horror, a lesbian!

If you think of all the gay celebs who are out, what percentage of them are gay men and what percentage are gay women. Many sections of the media are unable to process the idea of a lesbian unless they're

1)ugly, bitter, man hater or

  1. hot sexy blonde, porn industry type lesbian

The idea that an ordinary woman might be a lesbian is still quite shocking for many people.

Interestingly, apparently Jessie was told to say she is bisexual, rather than gay. Not sure what to make of that.

This info was gleaned from aol, not the Sun (which I wouldn't touch with somebody else's fingers)

Yeah, lesbians just aren't represented at all. There's Ellen De Generes, there's Jodie Foster, and after that I'm struggling to identify any high profile lesbians.

I think the media (certain sections obv) is definitely able to handle the idea of a gay man more than a gay woman, unless it's in a really lascivious way.

I agree Squoosh. But I think that as usual, the media underestimate people. I really don't think that many people would be really shocked to learn that someone high profile is a lesbian.

I'm disappointed they didn't go with the headline 'jessie j doesn't do it with the man dem man dem' surely a missed opportunity for a cheesy pun. But yanbu as if that's the most newsworthy thing happening in the world today? I think it shows how out of touch the sun is as I'm sure people of my generation who know who she is don't care, and people of my parents generation who might know who she is prob don't care either! Who are they trying to shock?

If my very holy Aunty Bridget can handle having a lesbian daughter (even if she is ever so slightly cats bum about it Grin), anyone can!

As an aside isn't it amazing to think the fuss that the very chaste Brookside lesbian kiss caused not too long ago, 1995 maybe. So I suppose a lot of progress has been made.

that kiss, squoosh. I tried to youtube it to check the date (thought it was 1980s) - apparently you have to over 18 to watch that clip!! maybe things haven't changed that much then.....
