Argg PIL

FIL gave dh a freshly caught trout, gutted and deboned it, and dh is cooking it this evening,as PIL are coming for evening meal. I have a big food thing where I cant eat food that has eyes, or looks like its alive, as this obviously does [vom] (in which he is serving on a fish plate, eyes, fins and all]

I have cod here, which I have said I will eat instead, but apparently I am being massively unreasonable, and FIL will be massively offended.

WhoIBU, I didn't ask or what the stoopid fish, I had already planned this weeks meal, which includes non staring fish!!!

YANBU. No-one has the right to force food down your throat because it's "impolite."

BonkeyMollocks · 16/04/2012 17:38

Yabu!!

I am like you can't eat anything with a head/eyes etc. But you are better than me because I wouldn't even have the thing on the table!

You are making a good compromise. If you don't want to eat it, then that is your choice entirely!

RuleBritannia · 16/04/2012 17:38

Justr say that the trout is not enough for those who will be eating it and add the cod to the meal options.

BonkeyMollocks · 16/04/2012 17:38

Shit!
Meant YANBU!!

strawberrypenguin · 16/04/2012 17:39

Would it help if it was served headless? I can cope with fins but not so fond of them 'looking' at me

TheseGoToEleven · 16/04/2012 17:39

He is BU. Personally, I could not be at the table and watch it be eaten.

Sarcalogos · 16/04/2012 17:40

Yanbu how rude of them trying to force you to eat something you don't like in your own home!

TheHappyHissy · 16/04/2012 17:41

what if he cuts you a piece of fish and serves it separately so you don't see the eyes etc?

could you ask him to serve you a piece and then turn it over so they get the full effect, while you wait till the face has gone?

Fish is fish, so you are eating fish which had a face at some point, but it could be construed that you are rejecting PIL's fish... If they are really that petty.

If you can't watch them carve it, that's fine, just make yourself scarce and have a laugh about it...

BaronessBomburst · 16/04/2012 17:44

Yummy! I will gladly stand in for you.

But FIL is BU to be upset. It's your house, you already had dinner planned, you don't want to eat the trout. And now there's more for him.

fedupofnamechanging · 16/04/2012 17:46

Why don't you just get your dh to serve it differently? No one needs to see the head etc.

ratspeaker · 16/04/2012 17:47

Why can't he just chop the head off?

Must be an awfy big trout if it's going to feed 4 people

YANBU I cant eat anything that has or had eyes and have to leave the room if DS1 is cooking chicken

CrystalMaize · 16/04/2012 17:47

Pop out to McDonalds (other fast food restaurants are available) and leave them to it! Grin

theincredibequeenofwands · 16/04/2012 17:48

Ewwwwwww!!

YADNBU!

Dinner should NOT have eyes!

Unless it's a Gingerbread Man or similar - they'd be scarey without eyes!!

tartyflette · 16/04/2012 17:51

I think most methods of fish preparation will tell you to trim the fins and cut the head off (unless you're Chinese, they serve it up whole). Chuck those bits into the bin fish stock.

laughlovelife · 16/04/2012 17:53

Ive asked for it to be served separate, I cant even go in my fridge as its just LOOKING at me, however dh and mil want it served on the fish plate as that's how it is meant to be served, its a big fish, and is feeding 4 adults and 2 DC.

Seriously want to vom, I know meat/fish, once was moo-ing and swimming, but ignorance is bliss, I dont want to eat food that resembles its once aliveness Grin

OP posts:
BonkeyMollocks · 16/04/2012 17:56

Maybe you should just slap everyone who is 'offended' with said fish Grin

ripsishere · 16/04/2012 17:58

That's not a trout it is a dolphin. It's feeding six people Shock

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 16/04/2012 17:59

Oh for goodness sake don't be so pathetic. It is dead, it will taste good, just eat it.

cwtch4967 · 16/04/2012 18:00

Why don't you just cut the head off? Would you be able to eat it then?

diddl · 16/04/2012 18:00

I agree that there is something revolting about a whole fish & I couldn´t eat it if served in the way your ILs want.

Who determined that that is "how it should be served"& why do people insist on sticking to these things?

It wouldn´t be served that way in my house.

Ungrateful as it may sound, it would be served my way or not at all.

Jux · 16/04/2012 18:01

YABU.

You are going to eat fish anyway. It would be different if you had an allergy to fish of course, but you don't. When your portion is on your plate it won't have eyes, it'll just be a bit of fish and will look very like any other bit of fish, including the cod you're proposing having anyway.

If your dh is serving it up, just come in a few minutes after everyone else, arrange for him to remove serving dish so you don't actually have to see it at all.

Try to get past your problem with eyes etc on food, as unless you're veggie, then a lot of what you eat has them in their natural state, and it's a bit childish to try and pretend things are different.

eurochick · 16/04/2012 18:02

How did we get so divorced from where our food comes from that people cannot eat a fish that looks like a fish, ffs?

LimeLeafLizard · 16/04/2012 18:03

Surely the cod had eyes, too, though? Are you vegetarian?

ElephantsAreMadeOfElements · 16/04/2012 18:05

Surely this is really an "Argg DH"? He could easily chop the head off before serving it but is deliberately leaving it on with no regard for your feelings. Is he normally like that?

NarkedPuffin · 16/04/2012 18:05

It's a fish! If it didn't have eyes it wouldn't have been able to see. If that bothers you stop eating flesh!

Having said that, it's pretty ridiculous that a 'gift' is presented and the giver is dictating how it's going to be served. It obviously bothers you, and if your DH doesn't want you to 'offend' your FIL, he needs to dish up in the kitchen or remove the head and tail.
