To not get Musical Theatre

springydaffs · 15/04/2012 15:21

sorry, but I just don't.

I've just seen Phantom and, frankly, I loathed it.

What am I supposed to be suspending to enjoy it or, even, get it?

OP posts:
dementedma · 15/04/2012 15:23

nothing. If you don't enjoy it, don't go.
I don't get opera. Smile

Tee2072 · 15/04/2012 15:48

There's nothing to suspend, well except the idea that people don't spontaneously break into song in the middle of the street and everyone else knows the songs and the steps.

There is no law that you have to get or enjoy it. Just don't go.

Problem solved. NEXT!

GrahamTribe · 15/04/2012 15:53

I "get" musicals but I can't abide them. I love the opera though. Lesson learned, don't go again OP.

Sparklingbrook · 15/04/2012 15:53

Lee Mead in his loincloth. That did it for me. Grin

Magneto · 15/04/2012 15:57

I love most musicals. Some ate utter tripe.

Watching sport however, completely don't "get" that at all. Playing it, yes I understand that but watching it makes no sense to me at all.

Bambino81 · 15/04/2012 15:59

I've seen phantom 65 times because I'm a saddo I just love it!! Seen loads of musicals and adore most of them.

Guess it's a marmite thing.

Bambino81 · 15/04/2012 16:01

Lee mead is lovely!!!

OP have you seen anything a bit more light hearted? Like wicked? Or maybe Thriller if you like Michael Jackson?

Sunscorch · 15/04/2012 16:10

Saying you don't like musical theatre is like saying you don't like film. Or books. Or music. Or theatre.

Each production is as different from the next as Leon is to Twilight, or A Song of Ice and Fire is to Karin Slaughter, or the Beatles are to Korn, or The Woman in Black is to A Midsummer Night's Dream.

Meaningless.

springydaffs · 15/04/2012 16:15

I've seen a fair few and they leave me cold, pretty much. I just can't suspend belief and eg Phantom is about a facial disfigurement that is supposed to be seriously evil (ok, his childhood too), which kind of gets my hackles up.

At the risk of a serious drip feed, someone very close to me has just started a degree in Musical Theatre, so I've kinda got to get iyswim

OP posts:
MrsKittyFane · 15/04/2012 16:15

Sun Agree with that! I have seen a lot of West end shows but I am not going to see Phantom and DD isn't going to Lion King because we don't like the story in either.

MrsKittyFane · 15/04/2012 16:15

Which ones have you seen OP?

Mrsrobertduvall · 15/04/2012 16:19

I love musical theatre, but don't like all of them.
Loathe We will rock you, which is a heap of shite.
Love Legally Blonde, Chicago, Avenue Q, Witches of Eatwick.

Are the songs good in Legally Blonde?

springydaffs · 15/04/2012 16:30

I've seen Wicked at huge expense and although bits were funny and a bit goosey it just didn't do it for me at all

I've seen Cats and... same.

I do like opera but not grand opera - all that drama is just annoying (I saw La Traviata in the 6th form at covent garden and by the end of it I was eating my seat with serious irritation and boredom - took the heroine at least 5 times to finally die ffs). I hate to say it but with MT I'm rather critical of natural voices that haven't had a classical training Blush

Mrsrobertduvall · 15/04/2012 16:30

I love them...my dd 15 has seen it 4 times and can sing everything
Fave is Is he Gay or European.

Mrsrobertduvall · 15/04/2012 16:31

LB is very pink and frothy, but feel good.
Even dh liked it.

Bunbaker · 15/04/2012 16:32

I like some and dislike others.

I don't get F1.

Bucharest · 15/04/2012 16:35

I like most, (what's not to like about bellowing men stomping around with thir legs apart wearing improbable trousers?)but have never fancied Phantom.
Cats was a pile of shite as well.
But I could watch and rewatch Les Mis.

springydaffs · 15/04/2012 16:36

seriously though, how can I get it, or get anything out of it? I find a lot of it sentimental and horribly sticky (eg Phantom still loving whatshername long after she had died - to me that's obsession, nothing to do with love )

I've been listening to the Elaine Page prog on Radio 2 on Sundays in order to try and get it.

OP posts:
Bucharest · 15/04/2012 16:36

(to be provocative though, I don't like most films. Bit of a waste of time when I could be doing something else I always think)

Been to cinema 7 times in whole 46 years.

SeaHouses · 15/04/2012 16:36

DD loves musical theatre and the film of Legally Blonde. If the songs are good enough for a 15 year old to keep singing them, it sounds as if I should take her to see it.

springydaffs · 15/04/2012 16:37

ok I'll give Les Mis a go

Elaine Page not good advert though. Strange little woman. Like Mrs Pepperpot does X Factor.
