To not get Musical Theatre

springydaffs · 15/04/2012 15:21

sorry, but I just don't.

I've just seen Phantom and, frankly, I loathed it.

What am I supposed to be suspending to enjoy it or, even, get it?

"DD isn't going to Lion King because we don't like the story"

What is this blasphemy?

Mrsrobertduvall · 15/04/2012 18:33

Love Little Shop oh Horrors

bruffin · 15/04/2012 18:46

Lion King is Hamlet!

DSs year 6 leaving treat was Little Shop of Horrors and I got to go as a helper. It was good fun.

whitewhitewine · 15/04/2012 18:49

Has anyone seen Jersey Boys?

bruffin · 15/04/2012 18:52

Yes it is very enjoyable especially if you like the 4 seasons., but not for little ears as the language is quite bad.

LadyKooKoo · 15/04/2012 18:57

I love love love musical theatre and could fill pages naming all of the ones I have seen. However, if you didn't like Phantom then I wouldn't recommend Les Mis.

gafhyb · 15/04/2012 19:02

I love musical theatre, but I can see, that looked at onjectively, it's a tiny bit ridiculous

Go and see Billy Elliott. There's a rawness about it, the songs are really good. If you don't cry you have no heart. It's actually more political than the film.

2ombie5layer · 15/04/2012 19:02

I love musicals, but have never been to the theatre to see one :( I have no-one to go with [no friend emoticon]

I didnt like Cats at all or Rent.

I like Hairspray, Phantom, Grease 1 and 2, Oklahoma, Oliver, Burlesque, Chess, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, The Sound of Music. I have the soundtrack to wicked, but not seen it. OK ones are state fair, meet me in St Louis, the king and I.

I also really like the disney princess ones like The Little Mermaid, Aladding etc, but of course they are not theatre.

gafhyb · 15/04/2012 19:02

objectively

gafhyb · 15/04/2012 19:04

Billy Elliott is very sweary, but not inappropriate in other ways for a child of 10 or so, IMO.

LadyKooKoo · 15/04/2012 19:04

ZombieSlayer - go by yourself!

gafhyb · 15/04/2012 19:04

Shrek is very good as well. Any child would enjoy

AphraBehn · 15/04/2012 19:05

To the person that asked, Billy Elliot is brilliant but there is a lot of swearing so I wouldn't recommend for a 9 year old.
The theatre suggest over 10s but I think even that is too young.

gafhyb · 15/04/2012 19:07

2ombie - go and see Billy Elliott.

Also TOP TIP. Check out the website theatremonkey.com to find out what seats are the best value and to get in-depth info on the view from different rows/seats.

Also, they sometimes do ticket discounts

AphraBehn · 15/04/2012 19:07

Jersey boys is good as well, it's not what I would consider a 'traditional' musical, more like a play with songs.
I'm going to see Sweeney Todd in 2 weeks. Can't wait :)

whitewhitewine · 15/04/2012 19:09

Thanks Bruffin, I do love the four seasons and think DH would actually enjoy it as well!

whitewhitewine · 15/04/2012 19:10

Ooh quite fancy Sweeney Todd now as well!

HellonHeels · 15/04/2012 19:14

I have hated most musicals, including Mamma Mia, Wicked, starlight express, cats.

I did like Phantom and Les Miserables and if anyone's in London the Regents Park outdoor theatre has productions of older musicals every year that are quite fun. You can take your own picnic and wine to numb the pain if you hate the show :o

bruffin · 15/04/2012 19:20

Hellinheels
Mum , mil and I went to see High Society at the Open air Theatre. We thoroughly enjoyed, but the heavens opened in the last 5 minutes so they couldn't finish it, we were given free tickets to see it again, so I went with DH and Ds who was only 7 or 8 at the time . He was transfixed by it.

"DD isn't going to Lion King because we don't like the story" What is this blasphemy?
Haha! I'm sorry Aribura!
We do love Musicals! DD and I have been to see
Mamma Mia
Grease
Chitty
Oliver
Mary Poppins
Joseph
JC Superstar
Cats
Beauty and the Beast
To name a few!
I'm not sure about the Lion King, I don't know why! I bet we'll go though!
TIP look on ticket website in the weeks before the show is on, especially for shows with a 'full house'. Seats re-appear all of the time and sometimes they are some of the best ones!

MrsKittyFane · 15/04/2012 19:54

Aphra thanks, that's what I thought about Billy E last year when it was on. I watched the film again and thought Hmm, she might be a year or two too young :(
I want to see it though!!

BillyBollyBandy · 15/04/2012 20:04

Hairspray is excellent
Oliver! good
Jersey Boys good, but agree less of a traditional musical.

Fame was shockingly bad, although not helped by the fact DM thought we had gone to see Grease and asked at the interval "which one is Olivia Newton John?" Hmm

Don't like Mamma Mia, Sound of Music, am going to see Dirty Dancing but more of a girls get together so choice of musical irrelevant.

muminthecity · 15/04/2012 20:11

I love musical theatre, Jersey Boys and Les Mis are my all time favourites, also loved Joseph, Lion King, Into The Hoods and Grease. Hated Dirty Dancing and Sister Act. I thought Wicked was alright. Haven't seen Phantom, never really fancied it.

YANBU though, I wouldn't expect everyone to love it. I also love football, and am incredibly passionate about it, but lots of people find that really hard to understand.

Shakey1500 · 15/04/2012 20:15

Can't believe I've only just seen this.

A big YES YES YES to seeing some Sondheim. Sweeney, Company, Sunday in The Park With George, Into The Woods, all top favourites of mine.

Bucharest I've a feeling we've slagged off discussed Nick Jonas being in Les Mis on a similar thread Grin

I'm also not a huge ALW fan, moreso sonce discovering Sondheim and the jolting realisation of "AHH! THIS is how it can be..."

Les Mis I could watch over and over. Not a Michael Ball fan really but I was impressed with him on the 25th Anniversary show. And I would love to see the current Sweeney.

oliverreed · 15/04/2012 21:48

I lurve musicals - I used to attend every audition going when I was a child to get parts in the musical theatre (never got anywhere as couldn't dance!). I love Sondheim - some very poignant and moving songs.

My personal faves (and there are many!) are; West Side story, Guys and Dolls (Saw a great performance of this at the National theatre and I'm sure Imelda Staunton was in it?), Sweeney Todd, Cabaret, A Chorus Line, Sweet Charity and all of my childhood faves; Oliver, Annie, Seven Brides, Mary Poppins, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,The King and I, Cats and Jesus Christ. Also loved Oh What a Lovely War!

Can honestly say that I havn't seen much over the past 15 years or so that has blown me away as much as my faves. I thought Billy Elliott was good and Les Mis but Blood Brothers/Jersey Boys/Ms Saigon/Phantom left me cold.
