To not get Musical Theatre

sorry, but I just don't.

I've just seen Phantom and, frankly, I loathed it.

What am I supposed to be suspending to enjoy it or, even, get it?

Springy- get the 25th anniversary dvd, had me howling with joy and emotion at Christmas, and there's a seriously gawjuss bellowy bloke waving flags around.

Mrsrobertduvall · 15/04/2012 16:40

Lol at Mrs Pepperpot.
It's the laugh.

I didn't enjoy Les Mis but the more I hear the songs, the more I do. I will go again..it's dh's favourite.

AutumnSummers · 15/04/2012 16:40

As a former theatre actress I can safely say that I think YABU from my perpective. But that's my perspective. If you're not that into it, you're not that into it.

FoofyShmooffer · 15/04/2012 16:41

Yabu. It's brill. Well most of it.

I have too concur that Phantom is shite( and Sarah Brightman has a face I'd never get sick of slapping).

Les Mis however, just amazing. Would watch it over and over.
I'm not sure there is anything to get though.

FoofyShmooffer · 15/04/2012 16:43

DH has issue with the 25th anniversary DVD. That issue is Nick Jonas and his nasally whiny voice.

discophile · 15/04/2012 16:45

Definitely NBU.

springydaffs · 15/04/2012 16:46

It is the 25th anniversary DVD I've just watched - on gushing recommendation from ds's girlf - "you really must watch it, it's fab" "have you watched it yet?" x10.

oh dear oh dear, all that off-tune ("that's horrendously flat/sharp!!") bellowing with no semblence of training Sad

I've got to get it. said close person has a tremendous amount of singing training on her course, so I do know people aren't splurged out on the stage without a lot of training.

I'm getting miserable now.

have always loved them from Doris Day and Jean Kelly on telly when i was little.

Love

Fiddler On The Roof
The Sound of Music

Evita
Les Mis
Blood Brothers
My Fair Lady

seen many others that I enjoyed but have never had any desire to see Phantom, Cats or Starlight Express

Would love, love, love to see a stage version of West Side Story.

KurriKurri · 15/04/2012 16:49

I love musicals, but I avoid anything by Lord Andrew like the plague because his music is shite not to my taste.

DD saw Les Mis recently and she said it was good but too long, - second half dragged a bit.

I like old musicals, - My Fair Lady, Oklahoma, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers (ignore the sexist premise, just listen to the songsGrin), Annie Get Your Gun etc etc. Chicago is good too, and Grease Grin

springydaffs · 15/04/2012 16:50

ooh! I love TSOM! Is there hope?

OP posts:
trixie123 · 15/04/2012 16:51

you might be over-thinking it. When I watch or listen to Les Mis, Wicked, Miss Saigon etc (less so Lloyd Webber I admit) I get goose-bumpy at times. Its an emotional thing. I prefer the less trained voices like Ruthie Henshall TBH. Just try and enjoy the spectacle of them rather than analysing.

KurriKurri · 15/04/2012 16:51

Ooh yes Hownoobrooncoo - West Side Story is great, I saw it on stage a few years ago, and its brilliant.

springydaffs · 15/04/2012 16:51

and I'd like to be in WSS if they have a part for an old bird, which is unlikely

Mrsjay · 15/04/2012 16:53

i love a musical I would love to be able to sing and use jazz hands but im talentlessHmm so i like a musical although I havnt seen phantom i have seen it on tv years ago and it was dire , and les mis i dont fancy that either , I even get excited when Dds do their yearly musical ,

Rinkan · 15/04/2012 16:53

Try Billy Elliot (the show not the film)- no cloying sentimentality in that and the staging is fantastic. I also love the film of Evita, which is a bit controversial, but have never ever had any desire to see Phantom. Chicago is also brilliant, extremely clever and not soppy in any way. My Fair Lady great too.

KurriKurri · 15/04/2012 16:54

Oh and I would also recommend seeing a good local operatic society production if you're not sure you'd like something, - much cheaper than risking West End or pro theatre prices on something you might not like, and all the ones I've seen, the cast have been excellent singers

KurriKurri · 15/04/2012 16:55

Guys and Dolls is fun too - lots of good 'set pieces'

Sarcalogos · 15/04/2012 16:57

Springy if it's the sentimental flowery stuff you dislike then go to a different kind of musical (they are not all the same in tone). Try you tube for Avenue Q clips, I guarantee you will feel differently about something in that vein!

I love most musical theatre but cats (0 point to it) and phantom don't do it for me either.

Rinkan · 15/04/2012 16:58

Wow, lots of cross posts there! If you love the Sound of Music, what about The King and I? And of course Mary Poppins!

springydaffs · 15/04/2012 17:00

I love the King and I! film version, that is. Didn't like Mary Poppins - creepy, famously terrible Dick van Dyke english accent plus poking fun at the suffragette wife .

OP posts:
MrsKittyFane · 15/04/2012 17:00

Mary Poppins was just brilliant! My favourite.:)
Oliver was superb too!

Bucharest · 15/04/2012 17:02

Oh no,I can't be doing with all that whip-crackaway-ing.

That Jonas boy being cast as someone we are supposed to fancy was just criminal. Urgh. Fuzzyhaired smarmarse. Didn't like the girly either tbh. Looked like she should be sat on top of a toilet roll in the bathroom.

MrsKittyFane · 15/04/2012 17:02

rinkan Would Billy Elliot be ok for a 9 year old? (DD is my theatre buddy!)

Hownoobrooncoo · 15/04/2012 17:02

Didn't like Avenue Q at all, was counting the mins till the end.

Saw Chitty, Chitty, Bang Bang a few years ago. Dragged the youngster along to look legit but was really husband and I who wanted to go.

Who'd thought you'd ever see Curly Watts on stage as Caractacus Potts alongside Adam Chance from crossroads as the Grandad - tres bizarre!

Bucharest · 15/04/2012 17:03

Jesus Christ Superstar v good.
