Broccoli is gopping frozen or fresh.

Proudnscary · 07/03/2012 20:40

Frozen cauliflower however is a triumph

Fiendishlie · 07/03/2012 20:40

it wasn't me, but YABU, I like it too :o

CharlotteBronteSaurus · 07/03/2012 20:40

i can't do frozen veg either. i know in these austere times it's not very MN to say so, but my involvement with the stuff starts and ends with petit pois. all else is wrong.

bumpybecky · 07/03/2012 20:41

YANBU! I bought some after reading a recommendation on here. It is foul! fresh is lovely, raw stalks are good too, but frozen is crap

Bogeyface · 07/03/2012 20:41

Charlotte, same here. Only do frozen peas but there was no fresh brocolli at the supermarket so I gave frozen a bash. Shouldnt have bothered!

redrubyshoes · 07/03/2012 20:42

I freeze all the stuff we grow. Don't know how else I could store it all.

Proudnscary · 07/03/2012 20:42

My husband used to work in Europe's biggest frozen veg factory so I take great offence at this thread

MissAnnersley · 07/03/2012 20:43

Oh God no.
The last thread about this did not end well. Grin

Dustinthewind · 07/03/2012 20:44

Frozen broccoli is truly horrible, there are many veggies that freeze beautifully and don't disintegrate into green slime when cooked. Broccoli is not one of them.

Bogeyface · 07/03/2012 20:46

I have no problem with frozen veg in theory. Its cheaper, more economical as you only use what you need, lasts longer, higher in nutrients etc etc

HOWEVER, with the exception of peas and sweetcorn, it never ever tastes as nice as fresh! Thats just how it is!

OP posts:
Bogeyface · 07/03/2012 20:47

And I have just realised that I cant spell broccoli :o

mumnotmachine · 07/03/2012 20:48

The best frozen brocolli I have found is Tesco value, and steaming it.
Still prefer fresh though!

Firawla · 07/03/2012 20:50

frozen brocoli is fine, we always get it.. however i don't think i have ever took the time to recommend it to anyone, so i can't take the blame for yours! but really, what's supposed to be wrong with it? i find it better as when i buy all fresh stuff it goes off b4 i use it, so i end up wasting. frozen is very convenient. i never noticed anything wrong with the taste??

WaitingForMe · 07/03/2012 21:04

I made some lovely broccoli and Stilton soup with frozen but it looked unappetising to serve as a vegetable. I like my vegetables al dente and while DH used to ask gently whether it was fully cooked, he now struggles to eat his mum's vegetable.

SwedishEdith · 07/03/2012 21:08

It just went all mushy when I tried it. Frozen spinach, otoh, is brilliant in curries and fish pie

Magneto · 07/03/2012 21:10

I actually love frozen broccoli and cauliflower, boiled until mushy and mixed together. I am willing to accept I am probably alone on this one. Grin

I would love to buy frozen veg, it would encourage me to cook more! But dh is such a snob the only things I am allowed are frozen sprouts because he doesn't eat them, only I do! Git.

QueenOfFlippingEverything · 07/03/2012 21:11

Oh god frozen broccoli is just vile.

Frozen peas, green beans, broad beans, sweetcorn - they all make perfect sense and taste fine and retain something of their original texture.

Frozen broccoli doesn't. And frozen carrots are just creepy [shudder]

MrsMuddyPuddles · 07/03/2012 21:18

redrubyshoes I now have the most strange mental image of your "Rampant Gardener" of a husband Shock wonder if my DH would like to play that game with me?

To those who can't stand frozen broccoli: try steaming it first. Most frozen veg does better for being cooked (peas being the notable exception)

frozen spinach is also perfect for adding to dishes

redrubyshoes · 07/03/2012 21:39

Muddy

May I offer you three hundred fecking chillis. A TexMex restaurant would struggle to use that in a month. Angry

And yes he is 'The Rampant Gardener' Wink
