for asking my chap to marry me on 29th- do I get him a ring? But chaps don't generally have engagement rings? Do I get my own ring ( will only be a cheapy thing either way but more of a token I guess )

he better bloody say yes! After 8 yrs, buying a crap house and having a baby (wonderful) together I think he probably will haha

thanks for any tips

Ooooh, go you. I would get myself a ring if I were you....sort of depends how you're going to do it...hide the ring in a glass of champagne style proposal? Keep us posted.

YABU to not post in the etiquette topic.

And no, don't buy him a ring.

Buy yourself one. A nice one. Then at least if he says no, you'll have a nice ring.

ZillionChocolate · 08/02/2012 22:16

Don't think there is really any etiquette. I did it, without a ring, he bought me one the next day. A year later I bought him a nice present. Everyone's happy.

I wouldn't have bought Mr Zillion a ring, he's not a jewellery type of man. He did have a wedding ring, but I couldn't have chosen it for him. He wouldn't have liked an engagement ring I don't think.

ZillionChocolate · 08/02/2012 22:16

Good luck!

aldiwhore · 08/02/2012 22:18

I wouldn't buy yourself a ring, but give him a haribo one and choose rings together if he says yes.

SQUEEEEE!

JerichoStarQuilt · 08/02/2012 22:20

Oh, how lovely!

I proposed to DH - not a leap year, I just did - and we went and bought rings together, which was a really nice thing to do as he felt able to choose and so did I. He thought really hard about getting a nice watch instead, btw, which might also be nice - for a long time watches were traditional engagement gifts in the states for men, and as men tend not to wear two rings it's nice.

Another possible option instead of an engagement ring for you is to go for a really posh wedding ring when the time comes for that, which would mean you don't have that slightly awkward 'will you marry me - now, buy me a ring right away!' sequence.

Good luck! Smile

JerichoStarQuilt · 08/02/2012 22:22

Oh my lord, sorry, I promise I don't usually use the word 'nice' three times in once sentence! Blush

missingmumxox · 08/02/2012 22:23

Ohhh, exciting, let us know what happens :)

maddening · 08/02/2012 22:24

will keep you posted

I was thinking of somehow asking via Ds - writing it on his vest in fabric paint as dp does the bath so would get ds undressed so could discover the "will you marry mummy" message - a bit corny but dp would love that as he is a big softy. He isn't a jewellry type so if there is no hard and fast rule I might have a squiz at a ring for me (failing that there is a bag of hoola hoops in the cupboard)

sorry - didn't know there was an etiquette section (oops) - discovered aibu 1st and got hooked! I have been in the housekeeping section and here haha (must remember to get virtually out more )

If he says no he has to buy you a dress - apparently but I'm sure it won't come I that !

Good luck

Grin I think that is just the right kind of corny!

blonderthanred · 08/02/2012 22:41

I didn't propose, but I did get DH a ring when we got engaged, with just a tiny diamond in. Why should women get all the nice shiny stuff?

QuintessentialyHollow · 08/02/2012 22:43

Bake (or buy) cupcakes, and hide your own ring inside. Act VERY surprised when you find it in a cupcake on the 29th. Shriek with joy and throw yourself around his neck in happiness.

amistillsexy · 08/02/2012 22:47

I love the vest idea...I love having a secret that lasts all day, the build up makes it sooooo exciting!

Hassled · 08/02/2012 22:49

I like the vest plan. Also like the buying yourself a nice ring just so you have a nice ring if he says no plan.

McHappyPants2012 · 08/02/2012 22:50

He may ask you 1st on valentines day lol

Honeydragon · 08/02/2012 23:03

It should say Mummy says will you Marry me? on it

And if you like you can send me a vest and I'll print/vinyl cut it on there in lovely Neon letters and send it back to you FOC.

If you decide to do it Pm me Smile

Or I can even put a photo of you and dh on a t shirt for for you with marry mummy on

ZillionChocolate · 08/02/2012 23:22

ifeelloved · 09/02/2012 07:34

I got dh a watch when we got engaged

eaglewings · 09/02/2012 07:38

There are some fantastic cuff links about, he could then wear them on the wedding day
