I lived in a flat for five years that only had a two bar fire thingy, so lots of sympathy from me.

Typical for it to happen over a weekend though eh?

Tiredmumno1 · 05/02/2012 01:17

Thanks agent, I know it's typical, the 3 dc's are all in bed, my youngest is only 10 months and has a cold already, and we leave in a town house, I feel like I am outside Sad

OP posts:
Tiredmumno1 · 05/02/2012 01:18

Leave = live, I really am not having a good night eh

OP posts:
BlastOff · 05/02/2012 01:22

Oh, poor you. Not a good night to be gas-less.

One night when I was a student, I was sitting in my room studying, I realised I could feel heat coming from somewhere - and followed it... To a lightbulb. I sat warming my hands near it. You could see your breath it was so cold.

Dh and I were just talking last night about how cold our Victorian semi would have been 100 years ago. I guess you'd have had to wear a lot of layers.

Hope it gets sorted soon.

Tiredmumno1 · 05/02/2012 01:25

Thank you, well they say between 8 and 12 tomorrow, it's our stupid gas company's fault, and their stupid incompetence, I bet they are in their nice warm houses though

OP posts:
missingmumxox · 05/02/2012 01:26

If it is just your home, call the gas company and exaggerate the age of your children, when it happend to me my 13 month twins became 10 months old, (well they where no bigger than most 9 month olds at that point)
If it is the whole street/area, they will get to it, just find more bedding, use towels, coats, dig out your Hot water bottles.
tommorow keep DC in jammies, put warm clothes on top, if you can find somewhere to go with heating, or cosy up on the sofa with blankets, crap films and hot chocolate if you have any.
FB/phone all friends to see if anyone can lend you heaters in the morning.

worst case senerio you will have to brave argos and buy some heater but try the FB/phone first, I have lost count of the amount of times people told me just after they had brought heaters..I had 5 of the stupid things, form when I too lived in a unheated house.

Tiredmumno1 · 05/02/2012 01:35

Hi missing, nope it's just us, and I said my youngest is 10 months, but still nothing, they say they are not going out to any calls even people with one week old babies.

They really have right royally buggered up, they were supposed to send our gas card by recorded delivery but they sent it to our old address, we have lived here for a year and they put in our meters in Hmm

There is no one around on fb at this time of night although it was a good idea, ta

totallypearshaped · 05/02/2012 01:36

Ring them up. Now. the emergency line. get them to come and fix it.
Definitely play the suffering children and hypothermia card - it's not like you're lying.

I got water reconnected and also electricity in the past.

AgentZigzag · 05/02/2012 01:41

I think if you were going to ring them in the middle of the night to say it's cold and they're being unreasonable, now's the time.

I mean, what a weekend to leave you without?

The first really cold snap of the year.

It's being arsed to sort it at half one-ish in the morning though isn't it?

Pleasantly surprised they're getting out to you on a sunday morning though Smile

Tiredmumno1 · 05/02/2012 01:46

I will try again, won't hold my breath though Sad

Agent that's what I thought, but let's wait and see if they really don't come tonight, which is really looking unlikely, I bet they won't turn up at all

OP posts:
Tiredmumno1 · 05/02/2012 02:09

Well that's a big fat resounding NOAngryAngryAngry

OP posts:
AgentZigzag · 05/02/2012 02:16

Have they rung TM?

If they're using the snow as an excuse then how do they think you're going to cope??

Tiredmumno1 · 05/02/2012 02:24

Nope, apparently their are no engineers Hmm I am so confused and cold

OP posts:
Tiredmumno1 · 05/02/2012 02:25

They really are not bothered about the baby or us

OP posts:
Solo · 05/02/2012 02:26

It's hard when it's cold :( but it wont be for long.

I brought a newborn Dd home to a house with no heating and no hot water after my boiler broke down and lived like that for a year. Not nice, but we survived. You will surely be fine after tomorrow :)

CinnabarRed · 05/02/2012 02:35

Do you have an immersion on your water tank? I know it's not much, and expensive, but at least you can have hot water if so.

Bed now. Put on as many clothes as you can wear comfortably, and then add layers over your duvet. More duvets, blankets, coats, towels. The trick is to trap air between many thin layers because air insulates better than material.

In the morning, get everyone in the same room, and do whatever you can to heat it - hot water bottles, fan heaters if you have any, hair dryer for five minutes if you have to. Try and stay in that room. Wrap everyone up in coats and jumpers. Don't forget extremities - gloves, hats, multiple layers of socks. Try and keep moving rather than doing sedentary activities.

Where are you? Friends or family you can visit?

Really hope your gas is fixed very soon.

RuleBritannia · 05/02/2012 06:30

Get the press involved - local paper, national paper, local radio. Publicity!

CinnabarRed · 05/02/2012 07:19

How are you this morning? Have been thinking of you during the night (I have gas but I also have three DCs under 5, none of whom sleep).

runningwilde · 05/02/2012 07:29

I hope you are all ok. I agree about getting the press involved, name and shame them! And switch providers! What complete and utter cunts they are :(

Sirzy · 05/02/2012 07:32

Oh no hope you get it sorted soon.

Our boiler broke last week and as soon as British has knew we had a 2 year old asthmatic in the house they got someone straight here even though it only broke at 6pm.

larks35 · 05/02/2012 07:42

Poor you! Totally sympathise! We're without heating and hot water this weekend too, I can't blame gas company though, just a broken boiler. We spent yesterday at a friends house and have borrowed an electric heater. We're living in the kitchen with the heater and oven on when necessary. All a bit cosy but bearable. Feel for you with 3 DCs though, I just have 1 DS and apart from waking up earlier due to cold, he's coping fine (much better than me!)

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 05/02/2012 08:01

Any news on your heating yet, OP? I feel so angry for you, it's miserable to be cold. Can you all go out for a hot breakfast when you get up/borrow an electric heater or pick up a cheap one (Argos)? :(

owlelf · 05/02/2012 08:02

Really hope you get it sorted soon OP, what a horrible day to be without heating.

Larks apologies if you knew this already but I think if your oven is gas powered you need to be careful about carbon monoxide. I'm afraid I don't know the science behind it but know that my neighbour had problems after using his gas oven to heat the room and dropping off to sleep.

FutureNannyOgg · 05/02/2012 09:32

Owl, if the oven is gas powered, and they have no gas, then it won't be a problem.
