Why would they leave us with no heating, stupid gas company, I am so angry right now, it's snowing and freezing, and we are suffering

OP posts:
OffMeTrolley · 05/02/2012 09:35

Could be worse, you could be in finland lol

YouOldSlag · 05/02/2012 09:39

Poor you OP. I can't beelive they won't help ven though you have a baby.

Even if they come tomorrow, make a huge fuss over this (probably not to the engineer, to the call centre I mean, the engineer is your friend).

Go to the press, head office, ombudsman. Tell the call centre you will be doing and ask for your call to be escalated (to a manager). I wouldn't let it lie!

SydSaid · 05/02/2012 09:41

Hope it gets sorted soon :(

Tiredmumno1 · 05/02/2012 10:08

Still nothing, hah they are soooo stupid every time I ring, thanks for all your messages.

Does anyone know where I can buy a southern electric gas card

It's so cold Sad

OP posts:
Tiredmumno1 · 05/02/2012 10:11

I HATE SOUTHERN ELECTRIC

fedupofnamechanging · 05/02/2012 10:17

Maybe phone your house insurers. If you have no heating it might be deemed that you cannot reasonably live in your house with young dc and they might fork out for a hotel today.

mumatron · 05/02/2012 10:17

You dont need to buy a sse gas card. If you can find a pay point that has some in stock then you can just pick one up. You don't need a code either.

I assume it's a replacement card you need? (You haven't had the meter replaced recently?)

It won't be an sse engineer that calls to you today, it will be the company that owns your gas meter (sse are just the gas supplier).

Please phone in and make a complaint on monday morning. There's no point complaining today, the people you speak to will not even put a note on your account to say you have been calling in.

Tiredmumno1 · 05/02/2012 10:26

Mumatron everywhere I have phoned says they just do british gas, gas cards only Angry

I know it's not southern electric I have spoken to its national grid, and onstream (meter owner)

The meters were changed in the week, the card was sent to our old address via recorded delivery, how the hell they can get that so wrong.

House insurance won't help just yet as onstream reckon they will be here at some point Hmm

OP posts:
mumatron · 05/02/2012 10:39

Having the meter changed makes it a bit more of a prob as you can't just pick up a blank one.

Please complain as loudly as possible tomorrow, and make sure you ask for some compensation.

Hopefully onstream will get their act together and get to you soon.

PigletJohn · 05/02/2012 10:56

Hope things have improved by now

a written letter of complaint to the address on your gas bill might get you a modest cheque in compensation.

Keep it short and point out that you gave them your correct address, which is where they came to install the meter, and therefore it was their mistake to send the key to a different address.

For some compensation payments, there is a standard scale of amounts, so for that letter, it will not make any difference how many young or old people you had, so you don't have to fill the letter up with that. I don't know if your circumstances match one of the usual payments. If not, you can have another go, more of a complaint. Head office is Dunkeld Road, Perth, PH1 3AQ though there is also a Customer Service office in Hampshire,

MistyMountainHop · 05/02/2012 10:58

oh god we had this this time last year

heating broke down and the stupid housing association couldn't give a flying fuck, took weeks to sort out

so you have my sympathies xx

hope it gets sorted very soon.

QuintessentialyHollow · 05/02/2012 11:00

Any chance you can go out and buy a couple of electric heaters?

Tiredmumno1 · 05/02/2012 11:13

Thank you mumatron, now they reckon only one engineer is covering herts and beds, I think they are liars

OP posts:
Tiredmumno1 · 05/02/2012 11:16

Thanks for the info piglet much appreciated

Quint that's where dh has gone, for some heaters, it's a disgrace, they will be getting billed for them as well.

ChippingInLovesEasterEggs · 05/02/2012 11:19

Oh :( How are all the kids this morning? Lots of DVD's under the duvets!!

purplecupcake · 05/02/2012 11:29

i do feel sorry for you .. i live in a house with only one gas fire in front room, so i know how cold you are feeling, thermal leggings 6 pounds in asda keep the legs warm, fleece blankets are a godsend.. extra duvets, water bottles, lots of tea and coffee keeps the hands warm lol I think if we didnt laugh we would go insane in this cold weather..

Tiredmumno1 · 05/02/2012 11:31

That's what the kids are doing chipping, snuggled up on the sofa, I gave them popcorn to cheer them up, I feel terrible. It's baby that I am worried about more now, he doesn't want to stay still, he is in the sleeping bag, but doesn't like it so keeps throwing right strops Sad

OP posts:
Tiredmumno1 · 05/02/2012 11:35

Purple, I am only at the thought that if it wasn't so stupid it would be laughable

OP posts:
notveryinventive · 05/02/2012 11:39

Sorry to hear of your coldness. We live in a cold house even with the heating on. I have a 4 month old and she is layered up well. Soup for lunch Id also suggest. Though Im sure you are well aware of little tricks to keep warm.

Hope you get something sorted soon

McHappyPants2012 · 05/02/2012 11:42

could you buy an electric heater to keep 1 room warm.

i take it you have an electric cooker, as you did mention cooking being an issue......so at least you can cook and the oven and hobs will warm up the kitchen.

hope you get a card soon

Tiredmumno1 · 05/02/2012 11:57

We now have a heater in the living room, so hopefully that helps a bit.

There is no point putting the oven on as the kitchen is on the bottom floor and is open plan it wouldn't heat the whole room

OP posts:
ChippingInLovesEasterEggs · 05/02/2012 12:28

Put all of you, but especially the baby, in 3 thin layers - it's the layers trapping the air that keeps you warm, not so much what the layers themselves are. If the baby is wriggling around and crawling he'll be fine - when he stops/sleeps put the sleeping bag on him.

Hopefully they'll get it sorted tomorrow!!

My mum died at christmas and had paid Gas Homeserve agreement for years. The boiler broke down, and as she died on 26 December, matters went into probate and her account was frozen. They then said that as she had not paid for January (because she was dead) they would not come out to fix the boiler. I patiently explained that the family had been trying to arrange the service prior to her death but they were having none of it!

I then discovered they had failed to service the boiler for three years whilst taking her money whilst she was ill. I believed they had carried out the service and it was only when I insisted on when they had last been did they tell me. They told me it was my mum's own fault and then my fault.

Callous, unfeeling bastards. They demanded my bank account details and the call centre woman said I was "disgusting" for asking if I could speak to someone more human.

They must have thought better of it and they are now supposed to be calling next week - a manager just left a message on my answerphone.

Just a warning, if you live in a house where the account holder dies, they will not honour any agreement when it goes into probate. They say they are a "business" and if you are old, infirm or vulnerable basically tough shit.

fedupofnamechanging · 05/02/2012 13:39

That is really shitty, Elsie. If they took her money then they have to fix the boiler - don't let them tell you otherwise, if the problem was reported prior to her death. Maybe see citizens advice or a solicitor, because they really shouldn't be allowed to get away with this.

Am very sorry for your loss x
