has made mn a poorer place for it?

it was so much nicer when everything was out in the open

Am I the only one who doesn't receive PM's?

Shock that must mean you are all talking about me!?

over inflated belief in how interesting or well known I actually am

ValarMorghulis · 27/01/2012 21:17

I just saw a thread about sending a pm to someone about something.
It had loads of replies.

It may as well have been written in Dutch. I couldn't make head nor tail of it

ShineYourButtonsWithBrasso · 27/01/2012 21:18

I recon we are best off out of it all.

ValarMorghulis · 27/01/2012 21:21

i just re skimmed that thread.

I think they think someone is a famous person? Sam Cameron?

But it hurt my brain trying to work that out

AgentZigzag · 27/01/2012 21:22

People would only use fb if the pms weren't there.

I just saw that thread (if it was in active convos Valar) it said usualsuspect has de-regged, if she has I'm very disappointed she didn't start a flounce thread somewhere.

I need to know these things

MsVestibule · 27/01/2012 21:23

Do people PM all over the place, then? Despite being a MN addict, I've only PM'd somebody once, and was glad I was able to do so.

I know it's an internet forum, but I don't think there's anything wrong with being a bit more personal (not in a weird way) occasionally.

ValarMorghulis · 27/01/2012 21:23

erm. yes I think that is the same thread. Not that i understood any of that.

southeastastra · 27/01/2012 21:24

they should use facebook in my opinion, think there are lots of chinese whispering going on on here via pm

OP posts:
AgentZigzag · 27/01/2012 21:27

It's like a soap opera though south, people are all outraged about what's going on but they love the drama of it all.

MN would fade away into cyberspace if there was no drama.

ValarMorghulis · 27/01/2012 21:27

I did PM someone from a thread. But only because I was worried about her and thought she may have been scared off of the thread as it had all gotten rather intense.

So I think it is a good thing in those circumstances.
I can see how it could be abused though.

Lots of "do you think xyz is a bit of a bitch" type things.

southeastastra · 27/01/2012 21:32

i don't agree with that though zigzag, of course drama is good and entertaining but mn has always been very transparent and the pm system must make it so easy for people to talk behind peoples backs

mn sort of lost a bit of it's soul with the pm thing

i've had some right weird pm s that should have just been put on the thread at the time

OP posts:
southeastastra · 27/01/2012 21:33

and of course the pm used for it's intended purpose (and i guess what the majority of users use it for) is perfectly fine

it's just the weirdos others who use it for cliques purposes

OP posts:
mycatsaysach · 27/01/2012 21:34

isn't the facebook thing a bit odd though too??

MollyBroom · 27/01/2012 21:35

It has never been out in the open. It used to be on MSN. Now it is PM or FB or twitter. Usually all three.

southeastastra · 27/01/2012 21:37

but msn and facebook takes effort, pm is instant

OP posts:
mycatsaysach · 27/01/2012 21:38

to me its like talking behind people's back - v playgroundish

obv for sleb gossips etc fine

JustHecate · 27/01/2012 21:39

but before PMs, those who wanted to, were just having msn conversations.

Not me. Nobody ever wanted to have long msn conversations with me y'bastards but there'd be reference after reference after reference to it. people getting together on instant messenger, carrying on conversations re threads and other posters.

People still talked privately before the PM system.

I used to see things going on and then 'get on msn' or whatever and you just knew that people were getting together 'backstage'

I don't think any forum is now or ever has been 'transparent'.

AgentZigzag · 27/01/2012 21:44

I would say it's just a 'risk' you take interacting with anyone on any level south.

People talk about the people they know all the time, some of it nice, some not, sometimes it's makes a difference to how you feel about the person, other times it doesn't matter.

Anyone posting on MN enough to feel 'friends' with anyone must know all the normal rules apply to it, just because it's on the internet doesn't mean it's all skipping around in flowers like a Led Zep vid.

That's not saying I agree with the SM mantra of just words on a screen, it's easy to get shit out of perspective sometimes though.

southeastastra · 27/01/2012 21:46

i think mn was alot more open a few years back. and as i said msn take effort, it's not that instant

mn seems to have made it easier for people to talk and i for one wanted that at the time!

think it's just being abused. shame mn isn't a regulated by users as it once was

OP posts:
southeastastra · 27/01/2012 21:47

led zeppelin never made any videos Grin

OP posts:
AgentZigzag · 27/01/2012 21:49

I suppose having it all out on the thread not only satisfies everyones curiosity as to what's going on Wink but it keeps it a bit polite.

I know you can get pms deleted and block the poster, but I can imagine you'd get all sorts of bollocks with them thinking nobody's going to see.

ValarMorghulis · 27/01/2012 21:50

Well if people would otherwise use FB/twitter etc then I suppose the PM system is a good thing. At least MN can keep and eye on what is being said? I assume they are able to see what people send and it isn't entirely private?

southeastastra · 27/01/2012 21:55

i doubt they have the time to wade through all those pms!

OP posts:
AgentZigzag · 27/01/2012 21:56

I'm sure they did, isn't there one in a field with hippy shit seeds floating about and their children playing? Confused

It's the main song from one of their albums.

MorrisZapp · 27/01/2012 21:56

I don't understand. If the pm's are private, how do we know there is gossip and bitching going on?

I'd be happy to partake but have never been pm'ed! Didn't even realise the function hadn't always been there.
