to think that Tacos have a basic design fault...

... or are we eating them wrong?

We have had some Mexican food before and quite liked it. We have had fajitas several times. Anway we came in to an Old El Paso Tacos kit (didn't buy it but PILs found themselves with it, didn't fancy it so gave it to us)

Anyway we decided to have them at the weekend and I was quite looking forward. Cooked the meat and put out all the accompaniments e.g. lettuce, tomatoes, guacomole, salsa and so on. But what happens after you load the taco shell up? You bite it, it splinters open and you end up with a handful of gunge that is what!

I had always assumed they were the sort of "party" food your could hold in your hand, but maybe not. Are you meant to eat them with a knife and fork? But if you do then the tacos shell is still going to split open and leave a pile of stuff on your plate so what is the point?

Easier to eat them wrapped in foil or kitchen roll.

Kayano · 23/01/2012 13:16

Thanks Angry hungry

BaronessOrczy · 23/01/2012 13:17

Don't eat them in polite company Grin

I don't know. I haven't had tacos in ages. But now I want some. Even though they are messier than any other dish.

I find the filling of tacos quite difficult, to ensure you get some of every topping in most bites. They should have a 'hinge' so eaters could get optimum taco pleasure.

pud1 · 23/01/2012 13:19

I have seen tacos that are like a tray. They look a bit easier but not sure you could get much on them. I am a greedy bitch

Ambi · 23/01/2012 13:20

I think it's discovery who have created Taco trays which are much better designed.

SilentBoob · 23/01/2012 13:21

Now I want Mexican food.

PaschaAndChips · 23/01/2012 13:22

I'd rather have an enchilada.

LadyBeagleEyes · 23/01/2012 13:25

They've got Stand up and Serve tacos so you can fill them up without them falling over.
Definitely messy, but I love them, and they're great for feeding teens.

debka · 23/01/2012 13:25

YANBU. The Americans like them, don't they, maybe they know the answer

PaschaAndChips · 23/01/2012 13:27

haha now I have that song from Electric Six in my head Grin

ViviPru · 23/01/2012 13:28

YANBU. They're stupid.

LadyBeagleEyes · 23/01/2012 13:30

I've got a taco kit in the cupboard.
Hmm, I'm going to check if I've got the other ingredients, I know I've got salad, do I have enough cheese...?
That's tea sorted then.

debka · 23/01/2012 13:30

Right OP, this is what you want.

startail · 23/01/2012 13:36

Taco Bell is wonderful in the unbelievably naff, tacky way that only America can be.
You are making me hungry.

OP UANBU, tacos are yummy, but you always end up needing a plate and cutlery.
The trays are much easier for DCs.

QuintessentiallyShallow · 23/01/2012 13:37

It is messy food.

The alternative is to Crumble them yourself, and bung the ingredients on top, then eat it like a nachos.

QuintessentiallyShallow · 23/01/2012 13:38

a nachos. Hmm a dish of nachos.

5Foot5 · 23/01/2012 13:43

debka Oh the Gordita does look a bit easier to handle - "pillowy flatfread" doesn't sound like somtehing that will shatter everywhere at the first bite.

*LadyBeagleEyes" I think these were called Stand Up and Serve and they managed that bit OK. It was only when you actually try to eat them that it all goes pear shaped (though I have never understood what it so intrinsically bad about the shape of a pear)

"flatbread"

SusanneLinder · 23/01/2012 13:45

Eat over a plate, and dont fill them too full. I love Tacos.

Hmm may have them this week now.

GingerWrath · 23/01/2012 13:45

Spread refrained beans over a soft flour tortilla and wrap it round the taco shell, double decker taco, no leakage!

Tee2072 · 23/01/2012 13:46

First of all, Taco Bell is not food, never mind Mexican food.

Second of all, they always break, that's the joy in them, the total mess they make.

Third of all, you can also make tacos using soft tortillas which don't break.

Yes, I am American. I also have Mexican relatives. Old El Paso isn't that bad, but just as easy to buy the ingredients and make it from scratch!

GingerWrath · 23/01/2012 13:46

Refried, sorry! Blush

redrubyshoes · 23/01/2012 13:52

I am having Taco's tonight and yes I will be sitting there with a lapful of food after they shatter Grin

LadyBeagleEyes · 23/01/2012 13:55

... I do have cheese, I've even got sourcream!
Tacos tonight then.

pud1 · 23/01/2012 14:52

Just informednoh that he needs to go to tesco on way home for taco ingredients
