... or are we eating them wrong?

We have had some Mexican food before and quite liked it. We have had fajitas several times. Anway we came in to an Old El Paso Tacos kit (didn't buy it but PILs found themselves with it, didn't fancy it so gave it to us)

Anyway we decided to have them at the weekend and I was quite looking forward. Cooked the meat and put out all the accompaniments e.g. lettuce, tomatoes, guacomole, salsa and so on. But what happens after you load the taco shell up? You bite it, it splinters open and you end up with a handful of gunge that is what!

I had always assumed they were the sort of "party" food your could hold in your hand, but maybe not. Are you meant to eat them with a knife and fork? But if you do then the tacos shell is still going to split open and leave a pile of stuff on your plate so what is the point?

Its more of a fantasy dinner google for tonight, but Im interested for future reference.

Charlie, have just read about Wahaca, Yellow not seen Lupita so im going to go and google that one by name thanks.

God, how hungry am I now.

We bought a quesadilla machine on the weekend, it has been used everyday, today it was tuna melts, tomorrow pulled BBQ pork using the left over rib meed from tonight! Quesadillas rock, going to try a chocolate and marshmallow one soon, a la S'Mores!

MixedBerries · 24/01/2012 21:18

A Quesadilla machine? WOW!! That sounds fantastic. But what does it do? Is it like a toastie maker? We make quesadillas in a pan by just folding the tortilla over. I'm intrigued.

CheerfulYank · 24/01/2012 22:09

I have this quesadilla maker. You use two tortillas with filling in the middle, and it bakes them into toasty little triangles. :)

BehindLockNumberNine · 24/01/2012 22:17

Oooh, have just googled and bookmarked Wahaca. Feel a trip to London coming on!!

Tacos are messy. Within one bite I have minced beef and lettuce in my lap and guacomole and sour cream running down my wrist...
That is part of the fun though. We eat the whole thing by hand and then use a fork to eat all the broken bits that have landed on the plate.

Utter yummyness...

ScorpionQueen · 24/01/2012 22:34

Ooh just got a Quesadilla maker on ebay. Great idea! Thanks.
:)

dementedma · 24/01/2012 22:50

crispy taco shells are just pointless and messy. better to use Nachos or corn chips with a scoop and load procedure.
Even wraps are messy - everything falls out.
hate bloody mexican style food. Easier to give the DCs a bucket and tell them to just dive in - less mess that way.

pennypencil · 24/01/2012 22:52

YANBU
tasty but useless - the chocolate teapot of el paso kits Grin

SydSaid · 24/01/2012 22:55

I break them in half, and just put a small pile of stuff on top and eat them that way. Much less messier!

YankNCock · 24/01/2012 22:58

Wahaca is great, I went there just after it first opened. Now live oop north and there's no chance of decent Mexican anywhere really. I think I am personally cursing places, I research them, decide to go, drive miles and miles, and then get there to find out they closed last month (then why is your website still up!?). Angry

If you're looking for something like Chipotle, try Tortilla near Angel tube station in London. Run by a Californian guy. It's been a few years, hopefully it's as good as when it first opened.

I love Mexican food, wish we had a Taco bell near, there used to be a lovely restaurant in Harrow that did Mexican (we went there one NYE), but it closed down, there was also a passable restaurant in Harrow that did enchiladas and so forth, right next to the cinema, plus they had children eat free. You guessed it, they closed down the bastards.

There is a lack of Mexican food in our area, Thai food is ten a penny (I'm not fussed with it) it's annoying.

There are Taco Bells in Lakeside, Basildon and Manchester. I went to the Manchester one for lunch on Friday, it was delicious but I do seem to have gained a stone overnight

LaurenTS · 25/01/2012 08:44

Taco Bell uk site

vixsatis · 25/01/2012 08:46

Is it me, or does all Mexican food taste the same? Nice; but the same? Isn't it all about different ways to wrap up some mince/chicken with guacamole/salsa/soured cream/black beans and cheese.?

V happy to be corrected

tyler80 · 25/01/2012 08:56

I have a quesadilla maker, it's called a frying pan Grin

GingerWrath · 25/01/2012 09:01

CheerfulYank that's the one I bought, don't see the novelty wearing off any time soon.

YankNCock · 25/01/2012 12:00

Lauren, I am jealous. I posted the news of the Manc Taco Bell on the Americans in Manchester facebook group before it even opened, but still have yet to go myself!

MixedBerries · 25/01/2012 12:28

vixsatis, that's the Mexican food our supermarkets and restaurants peddle in the UK. Mexican food is unbelievably delicious and varied with huge numbers of special regional dishes.
Have a look at en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Mexican_cuisine_dishes for a brief list. I was born and spent my early years in Mexico.
