... or are we eating them wrong?

We have had some Mexican food before and quite liked it. We have had fajitas several times. Anway we came in to an Old El Paso Tacos kit (didn't buy it but PILs found themselves with it, didn't fancy it so gave it to us)

Anyway we decided to have them at the weekend and I was quite looking forward. Cooked the meat and put out all the accompaniments e.g. lettuce, tomatoes, guacomole, salsa and so on. But what happens after you load the taco shell up? You bite it, it splinters open and you end up with a handful of gunge that is what!

I had always assumed they were the sort of "party" food your could hold in your hand, but maybe not. Are you meant to eat them with a knife and fork? But if you do then the tacos shell is still going to split open and leave a pile of stuff on your plate so what is the point?

Gingerwrath you are a geniusGrin thanks for the tip.

Feminine · 24/01/2012 03:52

You can buy square shaped bottoms here. (US)

They, of course hold more!

MixedBerries · 24/01/2012 05:36

YANBU. The ones here in the UK are shit. They have better ones in Mexico.

CheerfulYank · 24/01/2012 05:43

Oh yeah, they're a mess. Just eat them over a plate, and quickly. Or make burritos instead.

Halbanoo · 24/01/2012 08:58

This American finds Taco Bell vile.

Chipotle--much, much better.

Now I will weep in the corner for some beloved overprocessed, Americanized Mexican food. :(

MistressFrankly · 24/01/2012 09:04

Argh stupid thread!! think i might have to have tacos for breakfast Grin

Tacos are messy shells of loveliness.

AmberLeaf · 24/01/2012 09:09

You lean over the plate as you bite!

Yum, I want tacos now.

CheerfulYank · 24/01/2012 16:38

Chipotle is divine. I'm going to have some on Friday Halbanoo. :o

yellowraincoat · 24/01/2012 16:41

I love MixedBerries comment that tacos are better in Mexico! :) (not being bitchy, it genuinely made me smile)

My tacos never fall apart. Why is that? Maybe you're not rolling them tight enough or putting too much in?

5Foot5 · 24/01/2012 16:55

"My tacos never fall apart. Why is that? Maybe you're not rolling them tight enough or putting too much in?"

But you can't roll them!! They are rigid and crisp.

Oh are you talking about taco shells. I thought you were talking about the soft tacos.

AmberLeaf · 24/01/2012 18:42

I thought you were talking about the soft tacos

Which would be made with Tortillas!

yellowraincoat · 24/01/2012 18:54

Not really, AmberLeaf. If you go into a Mexican restaurant, 9 times out of 10, a taco will come in a soft bread.

yellowraincoat · 24/01/2012 18:54

A soft flatbread which is admittedly called a tortilla. But the hard shell things are remarkably rare in Mexican restaurants.

DrCoconut · 24/01/2012 18:59

We went to taco bell while in America. It was fast food but OK. My mexican friend however, her tacos are the business even though they sear the top of your mouth off.

AmberLeaf · 24/01/2012 19:03

Yeah I know what we get here is so far removed from real mexican food! bit like thinking Pizza represents Italy!

I wasnt actually disagreeing with you as from your first post you were obviously talking about soft tacos, was just clarifying that they are made with Tortillas [soft ones not the chippy sort-to add to the confusion] and more wraplike.

Whatever anyway..I love all of them!

yellowraincoat · 24/01/2012 19:10

Oh it's all so CONFUSING.

Enchillada, burrito, empinada, taco, tortilla...can't they just have sandwiches?

This is making me crave a Mexican.

AmberLeaf · 24/01/2012 19:13

Ive just been googling for decent Mexican restaurants in London.

CheerfulYank · 24/01/2012 19:14

Don't forget quesadillas, Yellow. My fave!

JustHecate · 24/01/2012 19:15

are you overfilling them?

yellowraincoat · 24/01/2012 19:16

Lupita on Villiers Street is good, AmberLeaf.

There's one in Soho on Brewer Street that's also pretty nice - don't remember the name.

electricslide · 24/01/2012 19:18

Did you find one?

ByTheWay1 · 24/01/2012 19:20

Prefer nachos - oh and Tesco's own are the best - much nicer than El Paso

Eglu · 24/01/2012 19:33

I love enchiladas. Am very hungry now! Don't like tacos though so can't help there.

CharlieLimaHotel · 24/01/2012 19:38

AmberLeaf there is a place called Wahaca - Mexican street food. Bluewater, Canary Wharf, Covent Garden and Soho. I could eat my bodyweight in food there and they have tequila
