To pay £40 for DS some Converse?

MuckyCarpet · 22/01/2012 15:36

DS liked Converse. He's now in men's sizes however so they're a bit pricey. The last pair I got him were in the sale last summer for about £18.

I've been told that it's "ridiculous" to spend £40 on trainers for a 13 year old. Thing is, he doesn't play football or anything so they do last him!

Am I being over-indulgent?

We did. Some red ones. DS loves them. I was a bit Shock but that was August and he's still wearing them. Grin

Sparklingbrook · 22/01/2012 15:38

Same price as school shoes. Sad

SoupDragon · 22/01/2012 15:39

It's always worth look in TK Maxx for these.

JimbosJetSet · 22/01/2012 15:40

They can be pretty cheap on Amazon.

squeakytoy · 22/01/2012 15:40

£40 these days is very reasonable.

ApocalypseCheeseToastie · 22/01/2012 15:40

Pretty rare to find cheap converse tbh tho TK Maxx get them from time to time and they're a bit less on Amazon. Just get them, they last ages anyways, DS wears them, he has a pair of The Who ones.

pigletmania · 22/01/2012 15:41

I used to spend £40 on dd Clarks shoes when she was a toddler, so no its not really a lot

Callisto · 22/01/2012 15:42

I love my connies so no, you are absolutely not being U to buy some for your son.

takingiteasy · 22/01/2012 15:43

If you can afford it then no, you can't really get trainers for much less can you?

gaveitago · 22/01/2012 15:44

Get him some that look like converse but don't have the price tag brand name. Did this for ds2 and they have lasted as long as the real ones ds1 has. They cost less than £20- ds2 doesn't care.

takingiteasy · 22/01/2012 15:44

I mean no, you are not being unreasonable!

AmberLeaf · 22/01/2012 15:47

Dont get him fake ones! like it or not the name is as important as the shoe at that age.

£40 is not that much, some of the more sporty trainers some teens like are way more than that.

2 of my boys wear converse, they are very hard wearing, my youngest is currently wearing his older brothers ones that were as new when his brother gave them to him.

CailinDana · 22/01/2012 15:50

I love converse but I was very disappointed with the Converse boots I got in November - they fell apart last week. I did wear them practically every day but I did that with previous pairs and they lasted much longer. I paid 80 quid for them! Very annoyed.

Zippylovesgeorge · 22/01/2012 15:59

Of course not - they are well worth it.

Both my boys wear them - little one has one pair at a time coz his feet are still growing. Older one currently has 2 pairs on the go with a 3rd pair coming for his birthday soon.

They are really hard wearing and I've always managed to sell the old ones on even for a few £££s.

verytellytubby · 22/01/2012 16:21

I'd pay for them.

ReebleBauble · 22/01/2012 16:23

My current pair of double tongued converse that are worn pretty much every day were bought for £26 on Amazon about 4 years ago and are still going strong! My giraffe print ones were £8 in a closing down store 6 years ago and Im wearing them right now. So in terms of quality, the money is well spent. But like others have said, look at Amazon for absolute bargains on really funky colours.

Cant wait to buy my DD her first pair even if her father bloody hates them

ragged · 22/01/2012 16:25

I am tighter than a gnat's arse a cheapo meany & I would spend that if I thought he'd get plenty of wear out of them. Trainers are a big status symbol for teens, cheap at the price if that gives him a little extra social confidence.

Sparklingbrook · 22/01/2012 16:25

Looks like MN says UANBU Mucky. Grin

startail · 22/01/2012 16:26

DD2 is getting some cheap ones for her 11 th birthday. She's got a Nike track suite, but the hoody at least will fit for ages. Her feet are bigger every time I lookGrin

startail · 22/01/2012 16:27

I'd love some purple converse, but I've blown my shoe budget on boots - I always do!

SoupDragon · 22/01/2012 16:33

I let DS1 have converse when his feet got to the same size as mine. He chose purple; my favourite colour.

marriedinwhite · 22/01/2012 16:50

If they are his out of school shoes, he needs them. And in spite of what other people say, I think 13 year olds need to be allowed to be trendy.

jamdonut · 22/01/2012 17:16

My daughter persuaded me to by her some Converse in the summer (when she was 14) ,though I was dead against it ,due to the price.

However, they have been VERY hardwearing and I would cerainly think about getting some more....although skint now, because she wanted some purple DM's for xmas /15th birthday.(VERY expensive!! I nearly fainted!!) Shock
