To pay £40 for DS some Converse?

DS liked Converse. He's now in men's sizes however so they're a bit pricey. The last pair I got him were in the sale last summer for about £18.

I've been told that it's "ridiculous" to spend £40 on trainers for a 13 year old. Thing is, he doesn't play football or anything so they do last him!

Am I being over-indulgent?

nah, I don't even bother with a pillow case

I put them in with the rest of the 40deg wash

not a problem

K999 · 22/01/2012 18:55

Even better. I'll chuck them in now. Smile

Having just had to pay £35 for a pair of shoes that will only last 18 month old ds 3 months at most i don't think £40 on a 13 year old is that bad.

DD, 11, has had Converser for years. Sadly, she's been in an adult size since was in a size 2! I have had a few bargains, but last couple of pairs have been £40+. Thank Gawd she's agreed to go shopping with us in Florida. I can't wait to sort out new Converse for her over there :) I think they'll be a little bit cheaper or at the very least, they'll have some different designs.

I don't think YABU btw.

DD also has Hunter wellies, even though her next pair will be adult sized and priced accordingly...some things have to be done.

I've got a pair of black ones I bought in 2006. Admittedly I haven't worn them that much, but they're basically as-new. Excellent value!

MuckyCarpet · 22/01/2012 19:07

I've just chucked his old converse boots in the wash and will stick them on ebay later :) I've just looked at the ones he's currently wearing and despite the abuse they've had over the past year the only marks on them are muck - so I'm hoping they'll wash well too!

Try looking at sportsdirect.com I have gotten loads of great deals there and recently bought as a pressie size 7 converse boots for £13 :-)

FabbyChic · 22/01/2012 19:46

£40 for kids trainers is cheap.

memphis83 · 22/01/2012 19:51

Look on mandmdirect they are normally cheaper on there.

BellaVita · 22/01/2012 19:54

Yanbu.

ComposHat · 22/01/2012 20:00

You should be over the moon he wants a pair of 40 quid trainers, ad opposed to.some horrible 100 quid Nike TNs

Converse are timeless classics and won't be out of style in six weeks. Sadly the shape of them don't suit my feet. Vans slip ons are the most comfy trainers I've ever owned.

MeltedChocolate · 22/01/2012 20:02

NO YANBU because you are getting them for someone young the only people who should wear them

smoggii · 22/01/2012 20:48

Pay £300 for flights to Turkey then you can get knock offs for about £15...simple economics!

pud1 · 22/01/2012 21:00

I have got some brand new red converse that I was going to sell. They are not the normal chuck tailors the are jack Purcell. Size 8. Pm me if you wan them

pud1 · 22/01/2012 21:00

That should say chuck taylors. Bloody iPad

mejon · 22/01/2012 21:26

They're not 'trainers' though are they? They're daps!!! No way would I pay £40 for a pair of sneakers. I'm in the minority though clearly so YANBU but IapparentlyABU Grin.

BackforGood · 22/01/2012 23:47

Well I'm with you mejon
Fabbychic - it's all relative. We don't have that kind of money for trainers, so, in my world, £40 is not cheap for trainers or any other kind of shoes, even for someone whose feet have grown. Doubley so if their feet are still growing.
That's not to say that people who have the money shouldn't spend it if they want to, but statements like "£40 for trainers is cheap" are very subjective.

DD1's 'Converses' came from an independent sports shop in Barnstaple back in August, cost £8. We were on holiday and it was pissing down so decided to do the new school shoes etc run rather than waiting until we got home as originally planned. She found them while DD2 was being fitted for footie boots.
They look just as cool as the other 13 year old's - she's clearly happy enough with them as she wears them for preference over everything else, even the lovely Ugg boots a besotted childless aunt got her. And I had some cash left to replace the expensive official PE kit shorts she'd lost before the end of the second week of term.
