To pay £40 for DS some Converse?

MuckyCarpet · 22/01/2012 15:36

DS liked Converse. He's now in men's sizes however so they're a bit pricey. The last pair I got him were in the sale last summer for about £18.

I've been told that it's "ridiculous" to spend £40 on trainers for a 13 year old. Thing is, he doesn't play football or anything so they do last him!

Am I being over-indulgent?

I love Converse.

marriedinwhite · 22/01/2012 17:18

Our DS had dm's for Xmas too - horrid things aren't they. Puts the converse's into their place.

Dee03 · 22/01/2012 17:18

Buy them.....I love converse too
£40 is ok, I spend that on my 14 year old as he's a size 12 now....they last so worth the money

camdancer · 22/01/2012 17:55

My Mum refused to buy me converse when I was 13. I saved up and bought them myself and have had a pair on the go ever since. I still have my first pair somewhere. They lasted years even with me writing on them and drawing in fabric pens on them. After a while Mum admitted they would have been a good investment.

TwoStepsBack · 22/01/2012 17:57

DS1 & 2 have always had Converse rather than trainers. They wear them everyday and a pair usually lasts a year.

I think they are great value for money.

jasperJohns · 22/01/2012 18:03

I agree that they are great vfm. Both my boys wear them almost all of the time. They get washed in the machine & never wear out.

I used to inherit my 13 yr old's when he outgrew them, but sadly, his feet are now much bigger than mine.

cheeseandbiscuitsplease · 22/01/2012 18:09

As long as its not broke the bank why not? They are hard wearing too. It's totally up to you what you spend your money. I treat my two all the time now I am not out spending my hard earned cash on nights out, taxis etc. I love to see them looking smart and tidy.

YANBU

If you have the money and are not going without something more important then why not?

bringmesunshine2009 · 22/01/2012 18:13

I say yes. I thought kids trainers could cost £100+ which is a scandal. £40 to be cool and fit in? Do it!

Heswall · 22/01/2012 18:15

Er no not if he likes them.

cardibach · 22/01/2012 18:15

I agree with most others - buy them. Al teast with Converse the money spent is justified by the quality. At price per wear they must get down to virtually nothing if they aren't outgrown. I do everything in mine. They actually look better a bit battered.

Forrestgump · 22/01/2012 18:21

£40 is fine, if you have to make a sacrifice along the way, then yes it is a silly amount.

KWL51 · 22/01/2012 18:21

Def not. Both ds have converse and have done for a couple of years. Ds1 is 14 And a size 9 ds2 is almost ten and a size 6 already. Even dd1 at 5 loves her pink sparkly converse.
Another bran they both like is vans. Slightly harder wearing and abou £5 cheaper.

bruffin · 22/01/2012 18:23

Both my dcs live in their conversed. Ds were 53 but they are the batman edition and he paid half.
Dd has mosh pit version, but needs new ones.

MuckyCarpet · 22/01/2012 18:29

One pair of Black double tongued converse - bought!

Thanks for the opinions, DS loves you.

I love converse and managed to get DS2 some from Office in the sale for £5Wink

Are these any good? Might save a few pounds Converse

LynetteScavo · 22/01/2012 18:36

So it's just my DS who wears Converse out in 2 months then? It's not ridiculous to spend £40 on a 13 year old, it's life.

sodapops · 22/01/2012 18:39

I wish my boys would wear Converse. DS2 had a pair of Vans for his birthday, cost £68!Shock

BackforGood · 22/01/2012 18:40

Totally depends on your disposable income.
I wouldn't, but then I'd never spend that much on shoes for me either (and I'm not still growing), but, if you've got plenty of money, then why not Smile

JaxTellerIsMyFriend · 22/01/2012 18:41

I bought one of my DN a pair for her Christmas pressie, she loves them and never has them off. DS asked for a pair too, so he got some too. He never asks for anything and I pay approx £40 for trainers anyway, would rather choose something he likes.

Fromheaven · 22/01/2012 18:48

I have new purple Cons. A little birthday treat for me, from me

AnyFucker · 22/01/2012 18:50

Converse are brilliant and well worth the money

You can chuck them in the washing machine too...they come out like new Smile

I have 4 pairs

K999 · 22/01/2012 18:52

I didn't know you could chuck them in the machine!! Fab, as DDs are filthy! I take it you just have to put them in a pillow case??
