In thinking that Jesus may possibly have been Gay?

I suggested this in another thread and the effect was like a fart at a funeral; it cleared the room!
It's not so far fetched though. He was 33 when he died, and never married. I would imagine that in the year Dot most people were married by the age of 18, so that is one confirmed bachelor.
And then there is the 'tache'n'beard, the sandals and the twelve guys he hung with..

Does it matter?

thisisyesterday · 17/12/2011 15:23

i dunno, maybe he didn't get married because he had better things to think about what with being the son of god?

i mean can you imagine at the feeding of the five thousand if he'd been like "shit, sorry, was going to give you all some food but just remembbered the wife wants me back to help bath the baby"

it would've cramped his style i reckon

Biscuit
Ismeyes · 17/12/2011 15:26

Maybe he was celibate? Or just never actually existed? Or the potential inlaw put off any girlfriends?

HecateGoddessOfTwelfthNight · 17/12/2011 15:26

There are people who claim that he was indeed married, that he had children and that he has actual descendents living today. based on some recent novel I believe Grin Wink

However, the bible does not mention anywhere whether he was married or not. It doesn't say he was but it doesn't say he wasn't.

azazello · 17/12/2011 15:26

Or possibly the gospel writers didn't actually know him and wrote down whichever parts of his life appeared best to fit their own particular view several years later.

LoopyLoopsWoopDeWoops · 17/12/2011 15:27

The thought has crossed my mind before too.

bagel it matters when many followers of the bible are homophobic.

LoopyLoopsWoopDeWoops · 17/12/2011 15:28

Hecate I read that novel too. Have forgotten most of it though... something about all his descendants being ginger and Indian?

SardineQueen · 17/12/2011 15:28

Now you come to mention it yes of course he might have been gay.

Agree with loopyloops about the reason in matters.

FiveHoursSleep · 17/12/2011 15:28

How bizzare. I had this conversation with the kids in the car a couple of days ago! My 5 year old asked it, as we had been having a fairly conventional conversation about homosexuality up until that point.

mrsjay · 17/12/2011 15:28

maybe he did get married to mary magdaline but the new testament was organised by men who perhaps didnt like women that much so was written out of the bible ,

HughBastard · 17/12/2011 15:29

I thought he Had Relations with MAry Magdalene?

SardineQueen · 17/12/2011 15:30

I have a lot of sympathy with the mary magdalene = wife / partner and then her name trashed by male writers.

And she wasn't written out but turned into a prostitute?

MardyStropAboutLikeButton · 17/12/2011 15:30

Marking my place as this could be interesting. Never really thought about it, but then I'm not religious. It could never be proven so in a way there's not much point speculating.

If he was and it could be proved, then I'd love to see the reaction of those Christians who are quite homophobic. (not all, I know)

SardineQueen · 17/12/2011 15:31

Someone with the obvious charisma that Jesus would have had would have had people flinging themselves at him left right and centre I'd have thought

scaevola · 17/12/2011 15:33

There is nothing recorded, one way or another.

Does it actually matter?

dementedma · 17/12/2011 15:33

as in all "confirmed batchelors" are gay? Xmas Hmm
Post the same question on a Muslim chat site about Mohammed and see how many people you can offend.

mrsjay · 17/12/2011 15:34

I meant writted out as in being his wife and yes she was turned into a prostitue , I watched a mary magedeline documentary this morning on nat geo , ive seen it before but i find it fascinating even though im not religious ,

nativitywreck · 17/12/2011 15:34

Yes I suppose he could have been married and had kids Hecate.

There was that theory, wasn't there, about Mary Magdalene that she actually wasn't a prostitute, but that was put in later by the woman haters.

I quite like the idea of him being gay though. A Gay Jewish communist. Groovy.

HecateGoddessOfTwelfthNight · 17/12/2011 15:34

Well, when you consider that the whole point of writing about him was to write about this divine being, this god on earth, writing about him being a 'normal' man, married, children... wouldn't fit in with that. It would make him - ordinary.

Not that it really matters if he was gay, straight or bonking that donkey. or even if he was real.

What matters is what the idea of him means to people who believe. If they chose to set him apart from ordinary people and ordinary lives, then they probably did that to show that he wasn't a normal man who was destined to have a normal life.

Or something.

I don't really know.

I meant writtten obviously not writted , Blush

nativitywreck · 17/12/2011 15:36

demented "confirmed bachelor" is an jokey euphemism, for Gay, yes.

OP posts:
PlumpDogPillionaire · 17/12/2011 15:36

There's a load of 'art' - films, poetry, etc. about a supposedly gay Christ.
Strangely enough, most of it's been banned.

DuchessofMalfi · 17/12/2011 15:38

Is that in the same way that the Pope is gay because he's not married either? I think not. Not everyone who isn't married by the age of 18 is gay.
