I have a bit of an ear-cleaning addiction myself but use cotton buds and try to remember not to scratch in public - no vigorous shaking though. I believe this came about from loving the feeling of having them cleaned by my mother after baths when I was small. The more you clean the more new wax appears (though you never get the big ugly lumps that I can't believe others put up with, now that is disgusting!).

I do jiggle my hearing aid moulds about sometimes when I get an itch, mum says it's grim...
