Drinking whilst TTC

difficulttimes · 07/12/2011 14:58

I was wondering what peoples stance is
I'm not atm,
Is it acceptable to drink in small amounts/moderation whilst ttc or completely teetotal.
I dont agree with ladette style binges whilst ttc but is a little bit okay, Is it a case of 'dont behave like you're pregnant until you know you are?? Or before?

I wouldn't

DamnBamboo · 07/12/2011 15:01

Of course it's ok to drink when you're not even pregnant Hmm

PeppaPigHostage · 07/12/2011 15:01

I didn't whilst TTC, most friends I know reduced what they were drinking whilst TTC but I was the only one I know that stopped totally.

rubyslippers · 07/12/2011 15:02

I tink a fair number of babies are conceived due to alcohol consumption!

The number of kids conceived after a drunken night out should put the kibosh on that theory.

If it increases the pleasure ;) ....

nativitywreck · 07/12/2011 15:04

Yeah. It'll relax you.

iloveberries · 07/12/2011 15:04

when i fell pg with DS i was doing nothing by the book, smoking, drinking quite a lot (say 4 nights a week a bottle of wine), As soon as i found out i was pg i stopped.

DS born at term, completely healthy.

Now TTC #2. I never went back to smoking after quitting for DS. I have given up drinking (apart from on a few occasions) and i'm not falling pg.

IMO quitting drink just adds to the stress so i would carry on as you are till you fall pg.

good luck

Thumbinnapuddingwitch · 07/12/2011 15:04

Depends on how hard it is for you to conceive - the harder it is (i.e. the longer you try with no success) the more likely you are to cut it out as one more factor that could be reducing your chances of success.

Generally it shouldn't be a real problem though.

difficulttimes · 07/12/2011 15:08

yeah I'm not a big drinker anyway tbh

I'm quite scared of being judged tbh.

Pozzled · 07/12/2011 15:09

I drank moderately while TTC and don't see the problem with it. I also had the occasional drink while pregnant.

TroublesomeEx · 07/12/2011 15:10

Both of mine were conceived with alcohol! Blush

But I didn't touch a drop once I knew I was pregnant. With DD that was New Year so I'd spent a month eating and drinking all the wrong stuff too!

I don't know if it makes it harder to conceive whilst drinking and if that's what your worried about, or whether it's the developmental risks...

I'd say cut down if you feel it's right but don't worry about it.

Both of mine are completely healthy.

RealiTree "bottoms up" nice bit of TTC imagery there Grin!

Rugbylovingmum · 07/12/2011 15:12

I still had a few drinks when I was ttcing. I don't drink very much anyway and really don't believe that the odd glass of wine will be a problem during those early days before a bfp. There are so many statistics and guidelines about drinking/eating while ttcing/pregnant now that you can drive yourself a bit mad if you worry about it all too much. I would just go with whatever you feel happy with - if that's having the odd drink then go for it, if you feel better avoiding alcohol then do that.

MamaLazarou · 07/12/2011 15:13

Yeah, get shitfaced and shag. Best way to get a baby, IME.

cocoachanneloffestivecheer · 07/12/2011 15:15

Judged, OP?

Almostfifty · 07/12/2011 15:22

I was away in France on our belated honeymoon when our first child was conceived. I certainly didn't skimp on the wine and cheese!

I drank before I knew I was pregnant with all of them, stopping immediately I had a positive test.

They're all healthy.

If you don't drink tons, you're not going to do a baby any harm.

Aworryingtrend · 07/12/2011 15:23

We have been TTC for 15 months and up until we had been trying for a year, I was carrying on as normal and that included drinking a lot. However, now we have had further tests and discovered the cause of us not conceiving I have stopped drinking almost completely.

Each to their own though, I think when you have been TTC for a long time you need to do whatever makes you the least crazy.

SantasCave · 07/12/2011 15:32

Unless you've told everyone you are ttc then no one can/will judge.

We've been ttc #1 for 18 months without success and to be honest I think I'd have gone insane without the occasional glass of Wine.

As long as you're not drinking heavily on a regular basis you'll be fine.

Alibabaandthe80nappies · 07/12/2011 15:42

Why are you scared of being judged? Surely you are the only ones who know you are TTC...

It isn't necessary to go teetotal even when you are pregnant you know, a small glass a couple of times a week is absolutely fine.

DitaVonCheese · 07/12/2011 16:00

It's fine for first six weeks of being pg - something to do with placenta being formed. Binging not good obv.

DD conceived at Christmas so deffo boozy Xmas Smile Gave up when ttc DS but that was because took 16 months and wanted to up our chances. Wouldn't rely on it as contraception though Wink

difficulttimes · 07/12/2011 16:02

well I discussed it with very closr friends as I thought I was going to burst.

OP posts:
cocoachanneloffestivecheer · 07/12/2011 16:05

If they're close enough to be told you're TTC (personally, we told not a soul), they're close enough not to judge. Xmas Confused

difficulttimes · 07/12/2011 16:10

you never know though.

OP posts:
ObiWanWithBellsOn · 07/12/2011 16:14

This fear of being judged, it's probably just a sign that you've been on MN too long Xmas Grin.

In the real world, no one cares that much.

NeuromanticisedVisionsofXmas · 07/12/2011 16:19

Where is the AIBU?

And yes, its fine to drink alcohol whenever you like.
