To be annoyed at ocado man....

cherub59 · 28/11/2011 20:48

.... For asking where his tip was?

I have never tipped the grocery delivery man as I thought ocado specifically say not to tip!!
And we pay for delivery!!!
And he was an hour late!!!

Does anyone tip the man from ocado?

Oh dear delivery men are certainly getting it in the neck today. YANBU to think asking for a tip is bloody cheeky though, especially if he was late.

TeaOneSugar · 28/11/2011 20:50

No, never.

I'm sure they're not allowed to accept a tip, never mind ask for one.

WhereMyMilk · 28/11/2011 20:51

No I haven't, and wouldn't! Have never been asked though! Do you live somewhere posh? :o

BartletForAmerica · 28/11/2011 20:51

How bizarre! I've NEVER been asked by an Ocado man about a tip (or given him a tip other than the time I'd just taken mince pies out of the oven and offered him one).

Was it a joke that just came out wrong?

pooka · 28/11/2011 20:52

Are you sure he wasn't joking?

We've had ocado deliveries for about 3 years now and have never tipped, nor been asked to. Lovely delivery drivers - helpful, chatty and friendly.

loueytb3 · 28/11/2011 20:55

Never been asked either. I do tip them for the Christmas delivery though since it seemed everyone else did.

cherub59 · 28/11/2011 20:56

We have used ocado for years and have never been asked before!!!
Maybe he was joking but I doubt it.
Yes we do live somewhere a bit "posh" but that doesn't mean we are rolling in it and just give our money away!!!!

I offered a tip to a Tesco driver once & she looked at me like I'd opened the door with my boobs hanging out.

OurPlanetNeptune · 28/11/2011 21:00

I have been an Ocado customer for years and get an average of 2/3 deliveries a week. Never been asked for a tip and I have never given one. I genuinely thought one is not supposed to tip the driver.

The cheeky bugger.

KateMiddIeton · 28/11/2011 21:03

I hope you said "yes, here's a tip: don't be so cheeky"

LoveBeingAFirework · 28/11/2011 21:05

BetsyBoop · 28/11/2011 21:11

I didn't think they could accept tips?

At least that's what our Ocado driver told us - Just before last Christmas after he'd battled through snow & ice & to get our Christmas shop to us (albeit 2 hours late, but he'd phoned to let us know & we were just grateful to see him at all!). I thought if ever a driver deserves a tip he did - but he said thanks but no, we are not allowed to accept tips. (So I filled up his flask of tea insteadGrin)

MarshaBrady · 28/11/2011 21:13

Really? I don't tip the Ocado person.

onemoreminute · 28/11/2011 21:17

They can't take tips. My dad worked for them for a couple of months.

TremoloGreen · 28/11/2011 21:23

Wow. I'm surprised. Tipping convention isn't really like that in the UK. In the US, it's not unacceptable to ask outright for a tip if it's not offered, but I've never had it happen here.

If I lived at the top of several flights of stairs, I might offer the Ocado man though... As it is, I never have and wouldn't.

TattyDevine · 28/11/2011 21:27

Nope, they are not allowed tips. I'd report him - there's a "rate your driver" option.

Been using Ocado for 3 years and never been asked. I'm dying to get this one so I can have a go!

They move them all around so you don't build up a "rapport" as they have the power to refund, apparently. How many times have you had the same Ocado driver? Either that or they have a very big turnover.

montmartre · 28/11/2011 21:30

Gosh- I have never had anything but lovely kind delivery drivers from ocado.

Are you sure it wasn't Iceland, and you've embellished? Wink

Honeydragon · 28/11/2011 21:40

Was he trying to make a bad joke to acknowledge the lateness of the delivery?
If not UANBU

I know when a driver came to us in the winter, I said you must be freezing. He mentioned his jacket had been nicked in the morning on another delivery. As I still had sample hi vis jackets in (do corp workwear) I offered him one. He phoned up his head office to check if he was allowed to accept it as he said they weren't to accept gifts or tips. Thankfully they let him Smile

eurochick · 28/11/2011 21:46

"Never eat yellow snow" is the tip I give to anyone who asks. If you ask, you ain't getting!

springboksaplenty · 28/11/2011 21:56

Ah honey dragon that's so sweet.

Surely he must have been making a crap joke. Our ocado man is lovely and doesn't even look askew at the mess whilst my ds tries to get a cuddle. Maybe he's just trying to escape my house!!

Sciencegeekmum · 28/11/2011 21:56

I offered a tip to a Tesco driver once & she looked at me like I'd opened the door with my boobs hanging out.

The other day I had a Sainsbury's delivery. It wasn't until the guy left that I realised my breastfeeding top was still open and my bra hanging out Blush

Well I guess he got his tip...

cherub59 · 01/12/2011 06:43

Well definitely supposed to tip.... I asked ocado and they said definitely not!!!

PontyMython · 01/12/2011 06:50

I would tell them that he said it. Even if it was a joke, he could really confuse somebody - an elderly/vulnerable person might hand money over, and it's not beyond the realms of possibility that they might sneakily accept it :(

MissBetsyTrotwood · 01/12/2011 07:09

Nope. I will on our Xmas delivery but not otherwise.
