.... For asking where his tip was?

I have never tipped the grocery delivery man as I thought ocado specifically say not to tip!!
And we pay for delivery!!!
And he was an hour late!!!

Does anyone tip the man from ocado?

cherub I had this twice from Ocado in central London - but not after we moved to Surrey. Hmm

One of the men was joking, the other definitely not.

I Always tip the Ocado man/woman and they've never refused it.

stuffthenonsense · 01/12/2011 16:18

ive never tipped, and never been asked....
and yes the power to refund is in their hands....i once refused a substitution and the driver asked us to accept it and he would refund the cost...im not sure this would always happen..it was a perishable and we were probably his last delivery of the night and he didnt want to return to base.

cherub59 · 01/12/2011 19:46

Sorry miss typed!!! Ocado say definitely DON'T tip!

OP posts:
mumeeee · 01/12/2011 21:20

I've never tipped a delivery person. Only just started using Ocada and have found the drivers very helpful each time.

neutrinoghost · 06/01/2012 12:11

Sorry for being a little late to join this conversation but let me assure you Ocado drivers ARE allowed to accept tips. I was a driver for over three years and happily accepted tips from 50p to £20 on a regular basis.
Sometimes you could go for weeks without a penny, other times you could get £20-£30 a day, especially in London and more at x-mas.

The reason you are told not to tip drivers is because there is a technicality involving TAX in which HMRC must be notified of increased earnings. We were told "technically you're no suppose to accept tips, but if someone offers why say no?, just don't tell people"

If you want to tip your Ocado driver please do (I don't work there anymore)
I can't imagine a driver asking for a tip, but there were some strange people there :)

catgirl1976 · 06/01/2012 13:03

this is slightly off topic, but i have a tipping dilemma that has been bugging me for years

are you meant to tip your beauty therapist? i usually do but sometimes they seem surprised so has made me wonder if i am actually insulting them?

bringmesunshine2009 · 06/01/2012 13:17

Q, if they are 2 hours late, can you get a refund on delivery???

NN to tipping ffs

Triggles · 06/01/2012 21:59

that "technicality" sounds an awful lot like "don't say anything or you'll get done for not reporting the extra income that you should be reporting" IMO. I'd be willing to bet that Ocado would not be best pleased to be implicated in encouraging people to dodge reporting income for tax purposes, so I seriously doubt whether this is actual company policy.

If they say "technically you're not supposed to accept tips" then you're not supposed to accept tips. Any manager that tells you to "technically" not do something but then says it's really okay to do it just don't tell anyone... is most likely operating outside corporate rules. Hmm

Oh, and it's actually NOT considered acceptable in the states to ask for a tip if one is not offered. It's rude and pushy, and I know many many people that would refuse to give a tip at all when confronted in that manner.

redwineformethanks · 06/01/2012 22:30

It's never occurred to me to offer a tip to a supermarket delivery driver. On boiling hot days, I have occasionally offered a can of coke or sometimes a bottle of beer for the driver to enjoy at home, but never money

Last year I could have offered Tesco a useful tip - namely that they shouldn't accept delivery orders for a seaside village full of holiday houses, when they're not willing to drive down the hill into the village. The driver freely admitted to me that they get loads of complaints because they can't contact people to ask them to come and collect from the top of the hill. He didn't seem to understand why some customers might not be happy about that!

carabos · 06/01/2012 22:34

Here's a tip for cheeky whatsits like that - don't run with scissors, and don't wear spots with stripes.
HTH

neutrinoghost · 09/01/2012 14:30

Most drivers are more than happy to accept tips for two reasons.

  1. Who in their right mind would turn down free cash when you're working your arse off for 18K?

  2. Everytime you (the customer) phone the call centre and demand your delivery charge to be refunded because the driver is late, or you ask for the cost of your eggs to be refunded because they are damaged, or you demand the cost of your bannas to be refunded because they are poor quality or near their sell by date.......the driver has money taken out of their bonus!

....that's right, even if YOU break something and phone the call centre to get your money back, the drivers get charged. Nice.

It's an issue that we (the drivers) have had for a long time. No amount of meetings seem to have the people in charge caring at all. It is for this reason that some of your drivers may have bad attitudes and be unwilling to help you when things are broken, because when their bonus packets arrive they are going to be VERY small, sometimes £0.
Obviously the drivers are only to happy to get hold of cash any way they can, so tips are really our only bonus.

(Ex-driver)

NoMoreInsomnia12 · 09/01/2012 14:32

I never tip the Ocado driver. They are doing a job not a special favour.

Stropzilla · 09/01/2012 17:01

NEUTRINOGHOST what?? How on earth does that work? I had to complain once because I had 3 packs of meat all delivered with the use by date of that day. They're meant to have a few days on them, and I had no room in the freezer so I called up and got a refund. Are you saying the delivery driver had to take the hit for that? What about the person who actually picks the food, do they take no responsibility? Or the shop themselves?

EdithWeston · 09/01/2012 17:08

I've never tipped Ocado, and no-one's ever looked as if they were expecting one.

By the way, how late is late (IYSWM) in terms of getting the delivery charge refunded? Perhaps the (ex)employees know? Is it anything after the end of the slot, or a specific length of time after.

SardineQueen · 09/01/2012 17:25

I have never had an ocado with a "bad attitude"
And I have never tipped them
And I have never been asked to tip
And it didn't cross my mind TBH Confused

I don't believe that ocado drivers are docked when there are errors with picking / packing.

SardineQueen · 09/01/2012 17:26

Ocado delivery person obviously! Not just "an ocado"

RoughShooting · 09/01/2012 17:29

"Were the drivers who asked for tips foreign? Perhaps they were just trying another form of benefit."

This was a joke, right?

SardineQueen · 09/01/2012 17:34

ARRRGH

and docked as in having pay docked

not as in having parts of them cut off

!

Hulababy · 09/01/2012 17:36

YANBU to think he is being cheeky!

I have never tipped our Ocado delivery man/woman.
I just wouldn't think to.
They have never asked either.

SaraBellumHertz · 09/01/2012 18:18

neutrinoghost you are actually putting me off ever tipping an ocado driver ever.

Why shouldn't a customer request a delivery charge be refunded if the driver is late? And do you really think people receive deliveries in tact, break items themselves and then request refunds?

I'm kind of glad you are an ex driver...

SoupDragon · 09/01/2012 18:25

I never tip nor have I been asked to.

I have, however, had many items refunded due to damage. Do I care if the driver gets charged? Not if they were the ones who, for example, put a 12 can pack of cat food on top of the kitchen cleaner, ruining most of the other stuff in the bag. Or put the cat food on top of the crisps.

PersonalClown · 09/01/2012 18:35

I can tell that the drivers DO get docked for damages even though the only contact a Driver has with the bags is when they get them out of the van to give to you.

9 times out of 10 it is crap packing in the warehouse. Useless staff/unreasonable targets/lack of training/lack of common sense/take your pick.

southeastastra · 09/01/2012 18:36

oh dear i was thinking of applying to become a ocado driver Grin not sure now
