Come on, ladies - say it properly!

OP posts:
FunnysInTheGarden · 21/11/2011 10:34

who in earth says ect? I have never seen it.

PomBearAtTheGatesOfDoom · 21/11/2011 10:34

Can I point out that it's ginger not g1nger? Grin and let's face it, one says it 'et cetera' not ect or etc...

ItWasABoojum · 21/11/2011 10:37

Surely 'ect' is a typo? I have seen e.t.c., though, which drives me potty.

Helltotheno · 21/11/2011 10:41

'ect' is a typo in the same manner as 'teh' and 'pron'. I don't love it but it doesn't quite make my eyes bleed the way certain other stuff does...

Thumbwitch · 21/11/2011 10:42

No, some people do say ecksetera. And therefore think it is ect. Sad but true.

And other people know it's et cetera and spell it properly but may produce an accidental typo.

OldGreyWassailTest · 21/11/2011 10:44

My favourite is 'coudl' (could) - I like the sound of that !

youtalkintome · 21/11/2011 10:45

YANBU

Thumbwitch · 21/11/2011 10:49

While we're at it though...

I would like to point out that if one is suggesting an example, one should use 'e.g.'; not 'i.e.', which should be used as shorthand for 'in other words'. Annoys me, that does.

blackeyedsusan · 21/11/2011 10:50

if it is not a typo then yanbu. however, as one with a dodgy keyboard(ds walked on it) then i can hardly talk as sometimes random extra letters appear and lots of letters disappear. i have also got dodgy fingers and bad eye sight and I am a lazy sod who can not alays be bothered to go back and correct stuff.

Helltotheno · 21/11/2011 10:53

No, some people do say ecksetera.

Ouch. Haven't heard that one for a long time!

One of my pet hates is people taking the word 'albeit' and making it into 'all be they' ... holy schmoley.

ok I feel bad now for being pedantic :(

tasteslikechicken · 21/11/2011 10:58

what about people who say "arksk", instead of ask, or "pacific", rather than specific. The worstest(!) of all though is when people write "could of" instead could have. The most irritating is when people write "mom" instead of mum!!!!!

tasteslikechicken · 21/11/2011 10:59

and the ones who miss out "of" between instead and could!!!

ShowOfHands · 21/11/2011 11:04

It's not a typo most of the time.

The same people use it all the time, multiple times in one post. It drives me batty.

hiddenhome · 21/11/2011 11:07

Some educated woman on Radio 4 was saying ecksetera the other day. I kept correcting her, but she couldn't hear me Hmm

Pascha · 21/11/2011 11:08

"Mom" is not a typo though is it? I thought it was a regional thing americanism ?

I am shocked to find I do say "ecksetera" but I still write it "etc"...

ViviPru · 21/11/2011 11:13

I didn't know till I entered the realms of MN that West Midlanders say 'Mom' not sure why/how that is though.

When it comes to touch-typos, I ALWAYS mistype regrads (regards). I have a client who mistypes her own name. Imagine being that stressed/busy/stretched.

InDulciJubilo · 21/11/2011 11:31

I always assumed that Mom was a North American word but, thinking about it and having read other post6s, I agree that it could be regional in this country. After all, they say Mam in the North East.

PomBearAtTheGatesOfDoom · 21/11/2011 11:32

And then there's "walla" for voila (with the little accent that I have no idea how to type) Hmm

ViviPru · 21/11/2011 11:33

I've a grim east midlands accent and have been informed that I say 'Moom' but I would never type it that way...

TeaCider · 21/11/2011 11:38

My bugbear is 'weary' in place of wary. I need to get out more. Grin

GreenEyesandNiceHam · 21/11/2011 11:43

Oops I do what Thumbwitch said quite often, I think (ie/eg). Sorry Grin

And I've typed 'wallah' instead of voila, but that has been deliberate

MyNameIsInigoMontoya · 21/11/2011 11:49

The one I hate most is "alot"!

Also drove past a council sign recently with a picture of a proud family saying "We didn't used to recycle..". Ouch. Grin

lottiegb · 21/11/2011 11:51

Um, if we were submitting material for publication or writing to people formally or in a work context I'd agree (and offer to help certain people with proof-reading!).

We're not though. I see message boards as being about communicating meaning, often quickly, not about composing perfectly worded messages. So, so long as messages can be understood, they're fine.

I've never seen 'ect' though, that's quite funny.

Pascha · 21/11/2011 11:52

"Result" always used to get typed "reslut" at work. We all did it by mistake on a regular basis Confused

InDulciJubilo · 21/11/2011 11:53

MyNameIsInigoMontoya

Yes, it should be 'We used not to ....' but it reminded me of another that is incorrect - 'I didn't ought to' .... instead of 'I ought not to have ....'
