Come on, ladies - say it properly!

OP posts:

And "female" toilets? Toilets do not possess any gender-specific characteristics, so they cannot be "female". And don't start me on "femail", this just shows that people read too much crap.

English is not my first language btw, so apologies if I am making some dreadful mistakes myself, but at least I am trying.

Written down it looks awful but when spoken I want to correct them, swiftly and with feeling.

ViviPru · 21/11/2011 13:15

Mardybra and your spellcheck wouldn't alert you either... much potential [bush]

Ghoulwithadragontattoo · 21/11/2011 13:45

For people so pedantic why is this not posted in "Pedants' Corner"?

bemybebe · 21/11/2011 13:51

Because it is not "pedantic".

Ghoulwithadragontattoo · 21/11/2011 13:56

It so is. In context no one is going to confused between etc and ect. Pedants corner is there so that those who care about these things can read about them there and the rest of us can enjoy the boards without reading a load of stuff about spelling, grammar ect (sic).

Ghoulwithadragontattoo · 21/11/2011 13:57

be confused between (sorry)

samwellsbutt · 21/11/2011 13:58

oh my god i thought i was going mad and maybe i was getting it wrong.

bemybebe · 21/11/2011 14:01

What prompted you to open a thread with a title "to point out that it's not 'ect', it's 'etc'!"?
Was someone forcing you? Should I dial 999 on your behalf?

Ghoulwithadragontattoo · 21/11/2011 14:11

I opened it to say why isn't this annoying stuff being posted on the correct board. I'm generally relaxed about where people post but the "mocking the stupid" tone that a lot of the pedantic threads take really gets my goat.

bemybebe · 21/11/2011 14:15

being annoyed at mistakes that pollute English language = not being pedantic
being annoyed at someone posting where you don't like it posted = totally pedantic

Grin
Ghoulwithadragontattoo · 21/11/2011 14:20

I didn't say I wasn't pedantic (I agree I am being about this). I said since you are so pedantic the least you could do is put it on the right board dammit.

bemybebe · 21/11/2011 14:23

I do not think so.

I did once give a rather good presentation all about naso-pharyngeal cancer, as part of a group assignment. The person who offered to make the handouts for us did them beautifully, and distributed them as planned. All the way through my spiel people were sniggering and I spent the whole time wondering if my skirt was tucked in my knickers or something. Eventually we realised that the stupid cow dear soul had typed "otits" all the way through instead of otitis. Confused

MissMogwi · 21/11/2011 14:34

My bugbear is carn't instead of can't. Lots of my Facebook 'friends' spell it this way, and as a wise mumsnetter said recently-it really grates my carrot.
