To have not known about 'baby diamonds'?

So apparently it's custom for a DP to buy DW diamonds for each child she has. I have not heard of this before? We have 2 children so should I be expecting (demanding??) sparkly shiny jewellery? I did mention it to my DP who didn't seem to know about it either! It's my fortieth birthday soon too. Maybe he could combine the two and I get a mahoosive sparkler? What do you think?
(who doesn't love diamonds?)

Never heard of this. No diamonds here nor ever likely to!

IneedAbetterNickname · 01/11/2011 21:48

I have never heard of them either!

Oi, DP, you owe me 2 sparkly rocks :)

GodKeepsGiving · 01/11/2011 21:48

Worth a try I suppose........Smile

Dirtydishesmakemesad · 01/11/2011 21:49

I have never heard lf this but if its true dh owes me five, maybe some sort of bracelet..

JennyPiccolo · 01/11/2011 21:49

i got cubic zirconia, cos we're broke. But it's the sentiment.

PartyPooperz · 01/11/2011 21:49

I don't like diamonds!

What's wrong with me?

Are baby diamonds the new more grasping version of push presents then?

NJE · 01/11/2011 21:49

Didn't Victoria Beckham start this trend?

WitchOfWoo · 01/11/2011 21:50

I got a cup of tea and a biscuit.

25kilopumpkin · 01/11/2011 21:51

Oh yes this is true! I got a v nice diamond ring after DS1 -FFS dont let on it's NOT mandatory- anyway I deserved the fucking Hope diamond after that first labour [shudder] Wink

Fuchzia · 01/11/2011 21:52

It's eternity rings isn't it? Mentioned this to DH who said it was all a marketing ploy.

rubyslippers · 01/11/2011 21:52

LOL at deserving the hope diamond!

lovingthecoast · 01/11/2011 21:53

Yes, I got diamonds after each. I read about it when expecting my first and constantly told DH that it was simply the done thing.

We've just had No4 and DH gave me an eternity ring last week which is beautiful but the mood was dampened somewhat with his, 'and this is your lot' speech in which he meant babies and sparklers. Each piece does make me think of each special time though and certainly the earings and necklace I was given after the girls will be nice to pass onto them when I snuff it.

Bellavita · 01/11/2011 21:53

I haven't heard of it either, but then I don't need to produce babies to get diamonds Grin. DH knows which side his bread is buttered on!

auntiepicklebottom2 · 01/11/2011 21:53

i didn't even get flowers...never mind diamonds

lovingthecoast · 01/11/2011 21:54

Not sure it's new. DS1 almost 8 and I read about it in early pregnancy so nearly 9yrs ago!

elliejjtiny · 01/11/2011 21:54

It's traditional for the DP to buy the DW a pressie but not diamonds. I got a cherished teddy ornament after having ds2 and ds3 and one for getting pregnant with our first baby who I miscarried. Nothing after ds1 because according to dh the first teddy could be for ds1. Er, no. I wouldn't expect diamonds but a token gesture is nice.

sugarplumfairy · 01/11/2011 21:55

I clicked on this thinking it was a euphemism for "pearl necklace"

WibblyBibble · 01/11/2011 21:55

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Child_labour_in_the_diamond_industry

Yeah, of course it's a great idea to follow some completely bollocks yob-celebrity tradition to 'celebrate' your own children by exploiting others.

Proudnscary · 01/11/2011 21:55

Don't be fooled by the rocks that I got
Labour's still, labour's still a bloody awful shock
Used to have a little
Now I have a lot
No matter where I go I know where that baby came from

GwendolineMaryLacey · 01/11/2011 21:56

DH nicked my tea and toast. Diamonds? Pah!

backwardpossom · 01/11/2011 21:56

I thought the tradition was an eternity ring? I got some flowers from Tesco... Hmm

shineynewthings · 01/11/2011 21:56

I thought it was a string of pearls if at least one was a boy?

sugarandspiceandallthingsnice · 01/11/2011 21:56

In DH's family the tradition is an eternity ring.

SimulationStation · 01/11/2011 21:57

Oh Bellavita how lovely. So what's the deal with eternity rings then ? Is that after 1 year of marriage/together. 5 or 10 years. It's very confusing. I would like an iPad really....

I got a diamond eternity ring after my 1st, but it was a HORRENDOUS birth with a near death experience for me and DS. A ring of diamonds was mandatory!

I have just had a DD, and apart form being bloody brilliant and doing all the housework and childcare, nary a diamond has been seen. But am I bovvered?Grin not at all.

The eternity ring was a big surprise and not something that is usually within our financial reach...DH does have a dodgy scar on his lower abdomen...perhaps a liver had been sold?
