To have such a weird phobia?!

I am terrified of nautical things, old style diving suits and ship figureheads being top of my list, I actually feel sick and dizzy if I know one is nearby, do you have any weird ones?

The plastic peas from my DD's toy kitchen set cause a knot in my stomach and occasionally make me heave...does that count?

GypsyMoth · 23/06/2011 20:20

empty swimming pools
or pools full of water, but smooth still water
lakes too

GypsyMoth · 23/06/2011 20:23

i can trace my phobia back to about age 10 when a friends parents were rowing/arguing quite badly. we ran and hid in their outdoors empty swimming pool. they later divorced. my first experience of divorce.

also,at that time,my grandad was manager of local leisure centre. i remember at closing time, the smooth still silent pool

shudder shudder....feel sick now!!

WinterSnow · 23/06/2011 20:23

muffinflop - do thay scare you or just make you feel sick?!

ILoveTIFFANY - I hate deep swimming pools too, especially with no water in them , the empty deep end makes my hair stand on end

Gosh WinterSnow - I'm terrified of old style diving suits and the old diving bells they used to use as well.
There's one in the maritime museum at Falmouth and I can't look at it at all.
Have you ever had a bad experience with the sea/diving/boats etc - I know I haven't, although as a child I used to get recurring nightmares about someone drowning in one of the diving suits/bells.
Weird eh - what does it mean???? Confused

PumpkinBeans · 23/06/2011 20:25

Pylons and giant wheels or cogs. I sometimes dream I am right underneath a pylon and curl up in a ball not being able to look up!

PinkSchmoo · 23/06/2011 20:26

Bananas.
Not scared just totally revolted by every single thing about them.

WinterSnow · 23/06/2011 20:27

sparklingchampagne - What the fuck is a diving bell??!! Just when I thought it couldn't get any worse!!!!

Cows for me :)

WinterSnow · 23/06/2011 20:30

I've never had a bad experience with anything nautical although I once read phobias are related to past lives! I've been to places in Cornwall where they have a fair few 'nautical items' and had to close my eyes and back away slowly...

Oh God, they're horrible, just typing this makes me feel a bit shaky.
It's like a metal bell with no bottom, and they lower them into the water with people in them - you can still breathe as the air is trapped.

TiredMonkey · 23/06/2011 20:31

Feet :(

They're horrible things.

WinterSnow · 23/06/2011 20:33

sparklingchampagne - nightmares for me tonight!!!! I just dared myself to google images of diving suits, I had to shut it straight away, couldn't bare it

RosieMapleLeaf · 23/06/2011 20:34

Balloons. Can barely bring myself to type the word.

sparklingchampagne · 23/06/2011 20:36

Oh no - that's why I didn't link to a picture for you.
Horrible - although no idea why!

WinterSnow · 23/06/2011 20:45

sparklingchampagne - have you ever met anyone else with the phobia? I haven't, it is so odd. Might look up a diving bell just to see..... do they use them with the suits or are they just some weird diving contraption?!

OP posts:
WinterSnow · 23/06/2011 20:46

I know a guy who is frightened of foam and another who is terrified of frogs!

TidyDancer · 23/06/2011 20:47

I have many, but I fear that stating the more unusual ones will put me at more risk of being outed than anything else I have ever put on this site! I will however, share that I am afraid of the angel poop packing peanut things. I will not allow beanbags in my house for similar reasons. Makes me go all hot and sweaty just thinking about it!

sparklingchampagne · 23/06/2011 20:48

I've never met anyone else who admits to it (although I don't tell many people as they look Hmm at me!)
It's a diving contraption, don't know if they use them with suits as I've always been too scared to look
Actually it's quite comforting to know I'm not the only one with such a bizarre phobia :)

Mandy2003 · 23/06/2011 20:48

Watertanks, particularly the zinc kind. Also a bit dodgy with plasterers' baths!

WinterSnow · 23/06/2011 21:21

I have to close my eyes turn away at the beginning of the lttle mermaid because there's a figurehead on the ship

Wintersnow - are you a woman?

WinterSnow · 23/06/2011 21:37

yes

archieleach · 23/06/2011 21:38

Ahh I see

TakeMeDrunkImHome · 23/06/2011 21:39

I cant stand....little things, lots of little things. Like a pile of rice grains, or tiny tiny little beads or anything. They make me want to rip my skin off. Can't explain why, no logical reason. They make me imagine having a tongue covered in rice grains/tiny beads or skin covered in same thing and oh my god I am shivering as I type this.
