To have such a weird phobia?!

I am terrified of nautical things, old style diving suits and ship figureheads being top of my list, I actually feel sick and dizzy if I know one is nearby, do you have any weird ones?

Phew- now I feel normal Grin
Carpet and velvet makes my skin crawl
People eating meat off the bone makes me dizzy and nauseous cause I think of animals ripping my skin off.
Only recently been able to touch meat without gloves on ( and only cause I don't want to pass it onto my dd)
I can't touch leftovers, even if they are mine. Once hot foods gone cold it just can't touch my hand or else I'll be sick. Obv things like cake that it meant to be eaten cold is fine.
Cant swim over grate in swimming pool. (Don't let a 5 year old watch jaws...)
Phobia of heights/ falling - even 2 steps up a ladder and I'm a but light headed and panicky.
Blood/ talk of operations make me dizzy
Can't look out a window when it's pitch black out in case something's out there and jumps up to scare me ( watched too many scary movies!)
In last few weeks I've found it unbearable to watch/hear someone brush their teeth. I can brush my own tho. Actually just typing that made me wretch!

I seem to develop more apparently out of nowhere and others are getting worse. I get less panic attacks tho- I just wretch or feel faint. Do wonder if I should see a therapist tho!

I worked with someone who had a phobia of fruit. It wasn't just that she didn't like fruit, she was genuinely terrified of it. Bananas in particular. Most of us ate fruit at morning break and she would sit there looking really quite unwell. Someone went to a meeting once at which there was a lovely fruit platter. She brought the leftovers back to our staff room: the poor girl had to leave as she was nearly in tears. Sad

WinterSnow · 25/06/2011 15:17

I know quite a lot of people who get very funny about feet

Pigeons, not wood pigeons, but the common ones. Ugh!

superjobeespecs · 25/06/2011 16:07

my best mate hates feet and birds, when DD was about three she picked up on the bird thing and kept making them flap at best mate in town poor thing jamp out her skin luckily she adores DD and is her favourite aunty so its all good Grin not to say she doesnt remind DD quite often tho!!

Mamaz0n · 25/06/2011 16:14

I have a phobia of moths and butterflies.

I have nearly crashed the car because one has flown past before.

I scream, feel sick and as though i am going to faint. I can't even have clothing with them or pictures in books. nothing.

Makes clothes shopping with a 6 yo DD difficult. they seem to be on everything.

A neighbour had a buddlejia/butterfly bush in the front garden. It literally ruined my summer as i was terrrified to leave the house during the day as there would always be loads of them around it.
Thankfully they understood and removed it this year after seeing me crying my eyes out being blindfolded and ushered past the bush one day.

Stairs, especially wooden ones, after crossing the rickety bridge at Lossiemouth as a child.

I also have dreams about lifts, having a wall missing, being made of cardboard, going sideways... And glass escalators/stairs. Climacaphobia, apparently.

knockinonyerdoor · 25/06/2011 18:37

Balloons that have gone down and are all... wrinkly. Urrgh. Makes me break out in a cold sweat to even THINK of them.

And deep water. Well not deep water - I can swim in the sea - but when you're going out in a boat and you look down and the seabed goes from sort of greenish to deep black? Gives me the screaming hysterics.

I can't swim over dark bits at the bottom of the swimming pool, either. I know they are gratings over the drains. But they might be deep dark holes. Blush

WinterSnow · 25/06/2011 18:49

I wonder if these phobias are actually instinctive protection mechanisms. It would make sense seeing as the snakes, water & insect theme keeps popping up.

MrsKravitz · 25/06/2011 18:54

I have an extreme phobia of slipping. So much so that when it gets icy, I am immobile with fear and cry like a baby.

PhishFoodAddiction · 25/06/2011 19:09

I have a few...

I can't touch warm paper that has just come out of a photocopier as it makes me cringe and freak out. Similarly I can't stand touching paper that is too shiny and feels a bit squeaky under your finger.

I am terrified of pigeons and squeal if one comes within a few feet of me- I just have a dread of them pecking me, especially if I'm wearing flip flops or sandals. I hate their beady little eyes. It's only town pigeons though- wood pigeons don't bother me as much (apart from their infernal whoo-whooing every morning).

I have recurring nightmares about stairs/ escalators and these sometimes scare me in real life. I get a bit panicky going down long flights of stairs- it feels like I'm going to plummet to my death.

My friend really dislikes lots of the same thing together-so a plate full of peas would freak her out, or loads of buttons in a jar.

iklboo · 25/06/2011 19:14

Clowns, porcelain dolls, 'human' ventriloquist dolls (Lord Charles etc) Punch & Judy puppets. I had a pretty crappy childhood Grin

PhishFoodAddiction · 25/06/2011 19:16

Argh yes iklboo porcelain dolls...my auntie has a collection of them in a glass cupboard, baby type ones, and they are horrific with their dead eyes following you round the room.

valleyqueen · 25/06/2011 19:21

I can't look at anything with lots of little holes in, makes me feel sick.

Pips and seeds in the middle of fruit also send me cold, I love butternut squash but I could never prepare one:

valleyqueen · 25/06/2011 19:22

Oh and wet wool. Makes my teeth feel all itchy.

MrsFruitcake · 25/06/2011 19:29

Empty pools is my thing. Had to walk past a large empty outdoor one to get to the indoor one on holiday a few weeks back and I had to let DH lead me as I just couln't bring myself to look. I don't like the grates in the bottom of filled ones either, can't swim over them. I think I was scared of these as a child because my Dad made me stand on one once to prove it was okay, but it made me worse.

I am also scared of the texture of some things - tripe for instance.

JohnniesBitch · 25/06/2011 19:42

EndoplasmicReticulum - my phobia is labels as well so much so I cut them out of underwear. Even my dc in a pair of pants with a label hanging out would make me vomit. Also sticky things if old or of unknown origin. I can do new stickers fresh from the sheet with the dc or wrapping a present and cutting tape from the roll but when the dc come home from school with stickers for good work I have to stop myself from being ill, and heaven forbid should I get a price label on me. Thank goodness for bar code technology.

EndoplasmicReticulum · 25/06/2011 21:25

Ah Johnnies, it's not just me then. None of my clothes have labels in any more. I did cut them out of boys' stuff when they were babies, but it then got a bit ridiculous as never knew the size of their clothes to pass on etc.

Can't do labels hanging out. I've never actually vomitted, but do have to swap places with someone if we're out for a meal and I can see someone with sticky-out labels.

M+S are the WORST. They are so long!

I am completely fine with stickers.

becklet · 25/06/2011 21:32

MrsKravitz I TOTALLY get the slipping thing - I get really panicky too. I have had this belief for years that this is how I will die - by slipping on an icy surface and hitting my head, I know it sounds silly but I genuinely believe it! When it was really icy this winter I could barely leave the house, and went into total panic mode if I had to walk on the ice...

MoChan · 25/06/2011 22:16

I can't tolerate it when people walk about on CARPET in SOCKS. It makes me feel sick. Mine's the sort of house where you're allowed to leave your shoes on. I'm the sort of person who wears sandals in most seasons...

michelleseashell · 25/06/2011 22:21

I can't even write down the thing that I'm scared of. It scares me the most that I can't stop thinking about it. I end up tapping my head and humming the eastenders theme tune so I can stop thinking about it. I saw a big one of it in the supermarket once that was playing music and I screamed and ran out with my bag over my head.

So no, you are definitely not being unreasonable.
