Tis the divvel's drink

Go cold turkey and give it up

DeepPurple · 09/06/2011 20:19

Me too. I keep trying to stop but I don't drink tea or coffee so it's my only source of caffeine!

cybbo · 09/06/2011 20:19

But it tastes vile

Pumpernickel10 · 09/06/2011 20:19

I'm more a secret lemonade drinker

Bohica · 09/06/2011 20:20

I only allow myself one line can a day. It has to be fat coke and drank from a glass though.

valiumbandwitch · 09/06/2011 20:21

There was a very interesting thread about this on another forum recently. One lady was embarrassed to admit that she bought 8 litres of diet coke in the shop each week. Then lots of other people were admitting that they were addicted to it too. The OP of that thread was trying to kick it. She came back to the thread a while later and said that she had LOST a stone since giving up diet coke. She didn't understand it either. WEird. What the HELL is in that stuff!

catgirl1976 · 09/06/2011 20:22

I used to do about 6 cans of full fat a day.

I now do about 6 cans of coke zero or pepsi max.

I quit smoking from 20 a day to cold turkey without too much effort but the coke has me in avice like grip

AuntieMaggie · 09/06/2011 20:22

Its bad for your bones woman - give it up or at least match it with milk!

wasabipeanut · 09/06/2011 20:23

Yuck, yuck, yuck. Everybody I know that has a weight issue seems to be addicted to diet coke. I stopped drinking it years ago and felt noticably better. I still drink a cup or two of coffee a day so I am no decaff/green tea saint but really, coke and diet coke are hideous. They have nothing of value in.

Bohica · 09/06/2011 20:24

I've had one can of coke, one glass of milk & one G&T.

That must be better surely?

wasabipeanut · 09/06/2011 20:24

Oh yes, and when we had our old windows restored we soaked the filthy dull old brass window fittings in coke. Came up a treat.

TheRainInSpain · 09/06/2011 20:25

I only ever drink it with Whiskey myself. It just doesn't taste right to me without a shot of scotch in it.

cybbo · 09/06/2011 20:26

You might as well drink neat Viakal

HeadfirstForHalos · 09/06/2011 20:26

2/3 glasses a day? That's not an addiction, come back when you're on 2-3 bottles a day Grin

Meglet · 09/06/2011 20:28

yabu. The diet stuff is foul.

Full fat / sugar / caffiene Coke is the mutt nutts.

cottonreels · 09/06/2011 20:29

Oh, Ive just found some friends! Im addicted too Im sure. Ive even googled it before but never found any mention that its actually possible. I drink 3 cans a day (pre toddler I got down to 2, and whilst pregnant had 1 or 2). Likewise I dont drink coffee or tea or get caffeine anywhere else. Ive seriously never had any other vices, drink only a little wine occasionally, never smoked or even dabbled with any drugs.
When I wa pregnant I found out that 1 can = 5 cups of coffee and felt a bit better about it. However Ive been doing it about 10 years now and the enamel is wearing off my teeth (they look quite shiny when you look close up).
My dentist said to stop or drink through a straw. I tried the straw but I think its the whole thing thats addictive for me - the taste, the caffeine, the really cold can (it loses a fair bit of appeal for me when its in a glass). The straw just took the pleasure off it iyswim.
Id like to give up as im quite embarrassed about it but honestly need the caffeine to get through the day. Ive a busy toddler at home, who's clingy and going through a screaming phase and if I dont drink diet coke I get a headache. Sad
I go in phases where I feel down about it and want to stop it, but then I sometimes think others have a few cups of coffee or a couple of ciggies a day and surely thats far worse?
Will you do anything about it?

tryingtobemarypoppins2 · 09/06/2011 20:31

wasabipeanut oooooooo I must be all shiny inside!

Interested in the lady that lost weight. Im not at all overweight (could do with firming up my mummy tummy) and always thought that as it has no calories that Id end up eating loads if I stopped drinking the coke.

microfight · 09/06/2011 20:33

what is the relationship between diet coke and weight gain then?

wompoopigeon · 09/06/2011 20:36

One of my friends did some market research for coca cola years and years ago. They had identified a market of coca cola addicts- we're talking eight cans a day, and wanted to grow this segment. One woman in a focus group graphically described how she felt out of control and scared if she didn't have a can of diet coke in her handbag at all times.
Cold turkey. It's the only way.

firsttimemum77 · 09/06/2011 20:37

Another addict here! I get through a 24 pack a week! It's mainly in the evenings and weekends, as i am at work during the day! I gave it up completely whilst pregnant! But straight back on it after. I am also a coffee lover and can't start my day without one! Have no weight issues though. I eat healthy otherwise, just can't give up the diet coke! I can't do the full fat stuff though and my coffee is always with skimmed milk.

Glad to know I'm not alone though!

claig · 09/06/2011 20:37

YABVU. It contains aspartame. Look it up. research it and you may change your mind about it.

Hatesponge · 09/06/2011 20:41

YABU to be addicted to diet coke - pepsi max has a much better taste! :)

I probably average a couple of cans a day - I can go a few days without it but I do miss it. I hate drinking water (plus the stuff out of our taps is vile) so it's that or nothing (I do drink coffee at work during the day but not at home, yes I know I'm odd!)

Blatherskite · 09/06/2011 20:54

I get awful headaches if I try to go cold turkey.

Currently trying to wean myself off it agian. I've managed it before but I always go back Sad

Got to be full fat Coke though

cottonreels · 09/06/2011 20:54

In all seriousness I wonder if I could find something to replace it. It would have to be in a can for me and preferably not carbonated as thats what does the damage to teeth (my dentist says even carbonated water is bad for teeth). Maybe I could take some caffeine tablets and wean off the caffeine with a bit less of a tablet each day. I know this sounds mad Sad.
Anyone know how many of the caffeine tablets a diet coke would be equal to?
