its quite well known it is fairly addictive stuff

thats why when you stop drinking it, you get withdrawal symptoms quite severely

squeakytoy · 09/06/2011 21:32

I was addicted to full fat coke.. and would easily drink 3 or 4 cans a day every day, sometimes more.

I gave it up 2 months ago, and (along with joining the gym and eating healthy on 1400 calories a day) I have lost 2 stone, and today got back into a size 12 jeans for the first time in 20 years.

I did almost give in to a can the other day, but it hadnt been in the fridge, and there was a bottle of water in the fridge which was ice cold, so I managed not to fail.

tryingtobemarypoppins2 · 09/06/2011 21:32

Thank you squeakytoy

'Hasn't the whole aspartame thing been tested and tested and they say its ok??'

Do you believe them? They told us for years and years that mobile phones posed no risk. Many people didn't believe it.

www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-1318040/Mobile-phones-Brain-cancer-risk-youre-told-about.html

and people laughed at those who said they could cause cancer. Then recently the WHO came out and said that they may cause cancer

tryingtobemarypoppins2 · 09/06/2011 21:39

Well done squeakytoy!!! That is fab!

Eating 1400cals and the gym would make a great difference......not sure about the coke?? Do you think if you had kept drinking it you wouldn't have lost 2 stone?

tryingtobemarypoppins2 · 09/06/2011 21:39

Sorry squeakytoy I missed that it was FULL FAT coke

Another addict here. 2L bottle perched next to me as we speak.

Hmm. Perhaps a cold turkey support thread is in order. I could definitely do with saving the dosh as well as dropping a stone.

cottonreels · 09/06/2011 22:11

I could try to pack it in if youre in it with me?

jasper · 09/06/2011 22:11

I have a friend who drinks 21 cans of diet coke a day.

Several of my patients drink 2-4 litres a day

youarekidding · 09/06/2011 22:15

I drink pepsi max - much nicer. Grin

I have cut back as realised I was getting addicted drinking too much.

I now just buy it when its on offer. Like now 8 cans for £2 in Asda - rude not too. (and now can make that last 3 days).

MissVerinder · 09/06/2011 22:27

You're all lightweights. I can drink 3 litres in a day, easy. I need to stop. Cokehead support thread needed!

MissVerinder · 09/06/2011 22:29

Diet coke, that is. I was wondering if taking Pro Plus might help with stopping? I get dreadful headaches when I'm in withdrawal.

squeakytoy · 09/06/2011 22:30

I buy 2 litre bottles of sparkling water now, and squeeze fruit juice into it. It has satisifed my cravings and I honestly think a can of sweet fizzy drink would taste rank now.

whackamole · 09/06/2011 22:38

I love it.

Full fat though Grin

LittleJennyRobyn · 09/06/2011 22:39

I have been addicted to coke for 15 years. I got a craving for it when PG with my son (now 15) and never stopped drinking it.
I could easily drink 2-3 litres a day and would get panicky when i ran out. If i didn't have any for a few hours would get jittery and anxious and have to get more.

I stopped drinking it in febuary/march (cold turkey). As i knew it wasn't good for me. Not to mention the damage to my teeth, had to have four removed in the last 6 years due to them crumbling and breaking.
The first week was awful but i stuck with it and now cant physically drink it...It tastes vile to me.
I also started drinking fresh orange instead but was drinking that like i was drinking the coke and caused tebbile stomach cramps/bloating so had to stop that as well Sad I have never liked tea and coffee.

But To be honest with you i dont feel any different, health wise. My weight stayed the same as well. But i do only ever drink water now so got to be good for me i guess

Sometimes i miss it but i really struggle to drink any fizzy drinks now.

SoftKittyWarmKitty · 09/06/2011 22:43

For those getting headaches, try swapping to the full fat variety. It could be down to the aspartame that you're getting headaches, not the caffeine withdrawal. I don't get headaches anywhere near as much since I swapped to full fat version. I still need to give it up altogether though Hmm.

Dozer · 09/06/2011 22:47

Am not addict but a binge-diet-coke-dr-pepper-zero drinker. Have managed to replace with redbush tea, which tastes like twigs but has similar comforting routine feeling, or decaf tea/coffee ramping up to normal tea and coffee when really need a boost (sad times when biggest vice is tea!)

Did this after a particularly nasty episode at the dentist, every time am tempted by the stuff I remember that drill.

Was never tempted by illegal drugs of any kind before dcs, but now would find it hard to refusr anything offered!

Dozer · 09/06/2011 22:48

Squeaky, congrats on the weight loss!

maighdlin · 09/06/2011 23:07

claig you do know the daily fail is scare mongering shite?

I'm not a diet coke person, i hate artificial sweeteners can't stand the aftertaste. however i drink a fair amount of normal coke (why is it called fat coke? there is no fat in it? i understand it can make you fat but full fat just doesn't make sense to me) cherry coke is my real downfall i would drink it all the time if i didn't have to physically stop myself because of tooth vanity.

fuzzypicklehead · 10/06/2011 06:47

Ok, coke addict support thread--where should it live?

Definitely going to take the plunge & go cold turkey. If I managed with smoking, surely I can do this! If nothing else, I've got to be spending upwards of £600 per year on the crap.

VivaLeBeaver · 10/06/2011 07:10

Stopping smoking was a walk in the park compared to my attempts to wean myself off diet coke.

Longtalljosie · 10/06/2011 07:30

You see Viva, that's just wrong. I don't like diet drinks so have never experienced this, but the way my friends speak of / their relationship with diet coke... really unhealthy imo... Sad

CelebratedMonkey · 10/06/2011 08:49

My husband was addicted to the full fat variety. I don't like coke but also got used to having it if we ever had a takeaway (went particularly well with pizza!). He stopped it when we were TTC by changing to fizzy water instead. When you drink the fizzy water your body takes a while (ime) to realise it's being tricked so it works for that immediate feeling of 'I must have a fizzy drink with my pizza'. Of course he still drinks a lot of coffee so maybe that made it easier. Still he hasn't had any coke in years now.

memphis83 · 10/06/2011 08:57

My sister used to drink 2 to 4 LITRES a day, she is a nurse, got took to one side and told her it was making her bones brittle.
She had IBS, turns out now she has given it up she didnt have IBS its just that the sweetener messes up your bowels and gave her the runs for years and shes all sorted now!!

PickleSarnie · 10/06/2011 09:04

I have two cans a day but can't live without them. I can get smug and judgy about people who can't give up smoking but if you tried to take my diet coke off me I would cry oike a baby.

ivwas never allowed dizzy drinks as a child so I think its a small act of rebellion ( although I'm sure that now I'm 35 and they don't have to take me to the dentist anymore my parents couldn't care less!)
