Alpha Male

to ask what this means, exactly? What is an Alpha Male?

OP posts:
Primalscream · 06/06/2011 17:03

Seeker, did you skip the 1st few chapters? Heathcliff was bullied terribly by Hindley and was made to live as a servant, Cathy treated him appallingly after returning from the linton's - they all got what they deserved - apart from Isabella.

Heathcliff was a product of his chidhood - but he bided his time and took revenge. I don't blame him.

exoticfruits · 06/06/2011 17:11

I just like him! I haven't a clue if he is Alpha male-he would only be if people saw him that way-and only for as long as they saw him that way.

exoticfruits · 06/06/2011 17:12

Sorry-in reply to SardineQueen

SardineQueen · 06/06/2011 17:15

Absolute confusion at assertion that johnny depp is an alpha male based on presumably nothing more than what he looks like and the characters he's played Grin

I agree with beenbeta's post as if no-one would have guessed. This bit particularly "They actively dislike women who challenge their intellect or who obviously fail to be impressed by them. " Like I say, no end of trouble!

exoticfruits · 06/06/2011 17:20

It is only other people who give people the position-now that you can't go around being the strongest with sword!

PigletJohn · 06/06/2011 17:50

"They actively dislike women who challenge their intellect or who obviously fail to be impressed by them. "

only women, you think?

CrapolaDeVille · 06/06/2011 17:52

I've met a fair few 'Alpha females' there are some on this thread and all over MN. Bolshie, bossy and aggressive.

SardineQueen · 06/06/2011 17:54

Men they see as competition. If the men accept their dominance and "roll over" then no probs. If the man doesn't accept their dominance then they go into this rigmarole to try and work out which one is boss.

Women OTOH like beta says, are always expected to be submissive and if they aren't it makes them angry. So a different reaction to a man who challenges them - a woman can never be a "worthy opponent".

I guess this is why women who succeed in business often have to be "one of the boys" as it's the only way these knobends will give them the time of day. Flirting outrageously can help sweeten the situation as well. ie acting impressed.

SardineQueen · 06/06/2011 17:56

exotic there are different personality types, which aren't anything to do with how anyone is perceiving anyone. Some people are kind, some people are competitive, some people are quiet, some people are charismatic, some people are bullies, some people are rude. In all sorts of different combinations, which makes it all interesting! But they do exist.

hogsback · 06/06/2011 18:04

A massive bullying cuntweasel. Usually about 50 with a title like 'Vice-President of Marketing'. He will drive a pointless Range Rover Sport, play golf and be divorced and remarried to someone half his age.

He will also opine mightily that white, middle-aged, hetero men like himself are now a discriminated-against minority in their own country, usually while twatting on about his ex-wife. And then making a drunken pass at you. Even though your female partner is there Hmm

The above is completely hypothetical. I've never met anyone like this, honestly.

hogsback · 06/06/2011 18:10

Oh, and what MoreBeta has to say is spot on. I would actually go so far as to say that the typical Alpha Male type is a personality disorder and they should be banned from any position of responsibility or power over others. The fuckers.

MoreBeta · 06/06/2011 18:12

Sardine - oh now there is a whole thread in this sentence. I know the sort.

"I guess this is why women who succeed in business often have to be "one of the boys" as it's the only way these knobends will give them the time of day. Flirting outrageously can help sweeten the situation as well. ie acting impressed."

Actively support and enable sex discrimination and hence total poison for other women in the organisation.

Al0uiseG · 06/06/2011 18:19

Did anyone see in the press this weekend that Colin Firth had suggested or even initiated a study that scanned the brains of politicians to detect any physical differences in political leanings? The initial data looked as though a brain scan could predict political leanings with about a 72% accuracy!

I expect brain scans could pinpoint Alpha Males very easily.

SardineQueen · 06/06/2011 18:22

hogsback Grin enjoying your impassioned posts!

And hoping that you aren't still working with any hypothetical types who don't really exist honest guv...

SardineQueen · 06/06/2011 18:23

morebeta I used to sit there and watch these ludicrous people vying with and cajoling each other.

I used to think why can't we stop all this ludicrous posturing and get on with some fucking work Angry

But that would never do.

BorderBinLiner · 06/06/2011 18:24

Thank you MoreBeta, as a female in a 'male' industry they are completly awful to work with.

Socially they are hard work for liberal, intelligent people and if challenged become not the gracious, entertaining hosts they appear to be on the surface.

Lorenz · 06/06/2011 18:24

An 'ard bastard

MoreBeta · 06/06/2011 18:31

Hogsback/AlouiseG - you are absolutley right. I once found one of those '20 questions to identify a Narcissist' type test on the internet. I filled it in with one of my alpha male bosses in mind. It was a perfect fit.

There is a type. Narcissistic personality disorderNPD is a recognised condition. People like this can destroy organisations in certain circumstances. Unfortuntely, they are hardly ever found out by the people that promote them into positions of power and authority.

I worked for several. All had a wife and family and all had mistresses yet nobody liked working for them.

Al0uiseG · 06/06/2011 18:31

I have a huge wet patch soft spot for the Alpha Male "type". No matter how much you liberal lot try to bully them put of their "behaviours". They still do it for me Wink

Al0uiseG · 06/06/2011 18:33

*out not put. Fucking iPad!

SardineQueen · 06/06/2011 18:35
hogsback · 06/06/2011 18:38

BorderBinLiner - oh do I understand that. I dread off-sites with these people, where I'm expected to make conversation over dinner with them. If you're liberal, geeky and not exactly conventional in the sexuality department it's pretty hard work. I've never been involved in such hate-filled and insecure conversations - and this is with people who have NOTHING to be insecure about, they are the top 0.1% earners in the country.

By contrast, I adore socialising with my very non-alpha techies who have the most incredible range of interests and hobbies, are super-aware on politics and culture and are generally all-round lovely people.
