to ask what this means, exactly? What is an Alpha Male?

OP posts:

Anyone who has the 'wow' factor will get on in life - and any boss with half a brain will promote the good workers irrespective of gender.
who is Alan Sugars right-hand man? - a woman. And he's about as politically correct as the Nuremberg rally.

SardineQueen · 06/06/2011 11:40

Lying you seem to be taking about charisma in your earlier post, which is a different thing.

The alpha thing is based on dominance - alpha male means dominant male - as people have pointed out it comes from the animal kingdom (whether it can be applied to humans or not is a different question I think).

5s there a touch of Mills and Boonery going on on this thread?

SardineQueen · 06/06/2011 12:02

I suspect so seeker Grin

No ... but some fairly bogstandard MN sneering though.

Correction - I'm not married to an emotionally abusive man who doesn't give a shit about me - I'm married to a man who knows his own mind.
Maybe I should be married to a wimp who goes off to India for 6 months to 'find himself'

SardineQueen · 06/06/2011 13:01

Who's going to India?

Confused

Have I missed something?

SGM; This thread is about Alpha males, I gave my opinion on what I think an Alpha male is - I may not be right.
I said there were Alpha females too.
& There really isn't anything wrong in being a successful man - do you think Barack Obama got where he is today by hiding behind the photo-copier?

Agree with SGM that loads of successful people aren't "alpha" types.

Primalscream · 06/06/2011 13:48

Yes there are plenty of people who are successful, but to rise to the top, especially in politics or anything significant, you have to be a certain type of person.
This really is quite simple - just look in your garden and see who's eating who.

SardineQueen · 06/06/2011 13:53

Why should the biggest most aggressive predator be admired though? Using brute force and aggression to get what you want aren't qualities that I admire.

People at the top in politics are often right bastards/bullies, again I don't know what there is to admire there.

Primalscream · 06/06/2011 13:59

That's the way it is - if we didn't admire strenght we wouldn't give out gold medals to people who could run fast would we?

seeker · 06/06/2011 14:03

Well, we give gold medals to people who run fast if they win a race...but generally speaking we don't care whether our artists, musicians or doctors are 4 minute milers!

SardineQueen · 06/06/2011 14:03

Funny how I write brute force and aggression and you interpret that as strength!

Primalscream · 06/06/2011 14:11

Maybe the suffragettes only got somewhere because of brute force and aggression.

SardineQueen · 06/06/2011 14:15

Fighting when you need to - when your family is under attack, when your locality is at war, when you need to in order to get your basic human rights met, is not a good thing, it is sometimes a necessary thing.

I cannot understand how anyone could think that brute force and aggression in and of themselves are desirable traits for people to have.

PigletJohn · 06/06/2011 14:15

Saddam Hussein got to the top by ruthlessly killing his opponents.

That got his to the top of his hierarchical dominance tree.

Didn't make him an admirable person though.

SardineQueen · 06/06/2011 14:17

It's a very hyper-masculine view, to idolise the violent and aggressive.

I prefer my men and my women to have traits like empathy, fairness, kindness, in addition to confidence and a healthy dose of competitivity. Being a thug or a bully is not something to aspire to IMO.

SardineQueen · 06/06/2011 14:18

Quite, pigletjohn.

LetThereBeRock · 06/06/2011 14:18

I love Wuthering Heights, but Heathcliff was a complete arse.

LetThereBeRock · 06/06/2011 14:18

He's everything I'd avoid in a partner.
