It makes me cringe.

Who the chuff ever thinks about 'Laughing out loud', let alone ever says such a thing?

It is one step away from Txt talk and hunning and it makes me nauseous.

If something is amusing will a Smile or a Grin or even a 'Ha Ha' not do?

Please people, just stop, cease and disist.

I don't LOL, but I think I may overuse the Smile Grin too much.

Crevix · 24/05/2011 22:53

it's the LOL that is creeping in frequently.

and it is wrong in every sense. how would you not laugh out loud?

a laugh is out loud, not silent.

oh no i can laugh in my head too

Deesus · 24/05/2011 22:55

I often laugh out loud! Feel sorry for people who never even think about it (seems a little weird to me) Wink

I know many people do find lol annoying but in its defence - it actually predates 'text talk' by some years. it's been used as acceptable shorthand to show tone on internet forums pretty much since day one - we all know the, ahem, confusion, that can arise because you can't hear tone or see people's expressions online so don't know how certain comments are meant.

Also language is constantly evolving - each generation hates the words from the next....it's part of life and getting older.

LOL, PMSL, ROFL. LMFAO, etc etc Grin

madonnawhore · 24/05/2011 22:55

NO! YABU. This is the internet, hellooooo. 'LOL 'is entrenched in the history of t'interweb and message boards.

That's like asking everyone to stop saying 'OK'.

I do love a well placed LOL now and again.

thisisyesterday · 24/05/2011 22:55

in fact i've just invented LIMH

that's laughing in my head

leonoravonwagner · 24/05/2011 22:56

I know what you mean. I am quite new and so haven't learnt all the "etiquette" yet, but I quickly picked up from lurking that "textspeak" isn't acceptable here.

I like to write and have a tendency to waffle, I think sometimes it is just a quick response ?

leonoravonwagner · 24/05/2011 22:57

I expect waffling is even worse. Blush

Crevix · 24/05/2011 22:57

it is really irritating me. violently.

in my defence i am very tired and pollenated.

I prefer LMAOPKB

sungirltan · 24/05/2011 22:59

i'd prefer to start a better abbreviation. what about 'sr' for snicker or something. i often chuckle at posts on mn but rarely actually lol.

petisa · 24/05/2011 23:01

lolz at this thread!

Agree with deesus and madonnawhore, nowt wrong with the odd lol here and there.

Deesus · 24/05/2011 23:01

sungirltan Apparently the new 'in' abbreviation is alol (actually laughing out loud) as it's pretty much accepted that you are not really lolling when you lol on a forum. If that makes sense. Grin

Deesus · 24/05/2011 23:03

I am sooooo sad down with the kids! I have pwned this thread Wink
