It makes me cringe.

Who the chuff ever thinks about 'Laughing out loud', let alone ever says such a thing?

It is one step away from Txt talk and hunning and it makes me nauseous.

If something is amusing will a Smile or a Grin or even a 'Ha Ha' not do?

Please people, just stop, cease and disist.

Grin, which is not a 'PMSL', just a wry and more importantly, dry smile.

lubberlich · 25/05/2011 11:15

I could never be friends with anyone who LOLed.
And I certainly could never shag anyone that LOLed.
Same with people who don't know when to use apostrophes.
Irrational and pompous I know. I hate myself for it.

LadyOfTheManor · 25/05/2011 11:18

Must say I am forever telling people to desist from writing "lol". It's becoming rather common on MN, sadly. I hate all "txt spk", it makes me feel I'm reading someone else's shorthand.

I do engage in the odd "Ha ha!" or even a Grin but it's just a dabble and not something hideous like;

GrinGrinGrinGrinGrinGrin as exercised on another parenting website I could mention. netmums

TragicallyHip · 25/05/2011 11:19

I would normally say Piss My Self, I really am just laughing tho. Sorry Lying Grin

You on Twitter then Chaos?

mrsbunnthebaker · 25/05/2011 11:21

sometimes i say lol to myself at home

lol

LDNmummy · 25/05/2011 11:21

I actually do physically lol at things I read on MN. I believe I did so more than once yesterday Grin

I like it as a way of indicating I find something quite funny.

Can we have a laughing emoticon instead then? Lol seems to offend too many purists.

LadyOfTheManor · 25/05/2011 11:23

Can we not just laugh and not feel the need to tell everyone what we are doing by writing "lol".

worraliberty · 25/05/2011 11:28

Some twat told me to stop 'Loling' when I first started posting here...said it made me sound like a 'Facebook teenager' and if I didn't stop I should 'get off her thread' Hmm

I 'LOLed' repeatedly at the stupid cow after that...after every sentence infact. I'd never LOLed so much in my entire life Grin

LadyOfTheManor · 25/05/2011 11:30

I can hand on heart say that wasn't me.

She has inspired me though.

RockStockandTwoOpenBottles · 25/05/2011 11:30

worral now that is very acceptable usage of LOL! I didn't know there was actually 'ownership' of threads. Perhaps I missed something when I didn't read the rules

crazynanna · 25/05/2011 11:32

Good username.
Getorfmafred

worraliberty · 25/05/2011 11:35

Same here Rock Lol Wink

And while we're all moaning on the subject...why do people say things like "I took my DCs to school?"

They took their Dear/Darling childrens to school? I thought only Meerkats did that Grin

ScousyFogarty · 25/05/2011 11:39

well, its not going to start a revolution.

Anyone remember SWALK?

mrsbunnthebaker · 25/05/2011 11:42

I 'LOLed' repeatedly at the stupid cow after that...after every sentence infact. I'd never LOLed so much in my entire life grin

a lady after my own heart

lol

RockStockandTwoOpenBottles · 25/05/2011 11:48

Worral that is an excellent point re DC(s). But please don't get me started on apostrophes or I will explode Grin

Scousy yep - is that showing our age? There were others as well, but thankfully I can't remember them now.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 25/05/2011 11:52

I sometimes come out with the odd LOL if something did actually make me laugh out loud. Same as if something makes me snort in that rather unattractive way I sometimes type Which I suppose could be interpreted as me having a bad coke habit... Hmm Maybe I should stop...

As an aside Chaos i'm beginning to love your typos and I hereby christen them Chaosisms. Would people want to hit me if I said they make me LOL? Grin

MooMooFarm · 25/05/2011 11:54

Funny I was thinking the same thing last night. Somebody had posted a fairly serious message about something with a LOL on the end and it made me cringe.

Please don't ban WTF though - I really need that one Grin

RockStockandTwoOpenBottles · 25/05/2011 11:54

ABF I have also christened them Chaosisms. And they never fail to make me laugh, and laugh out loudly at that. Rather than a snigger or snort.

MovingToABetterPlaceAtLast · 25/05/2011 11:58

YABU!! I love it.

lols Grin

AmazingBouncingFerret · 25/05/2011 12:00

I saw a car registration that was WTF. Loads better than my WYZ Angry Envy

LadyOfTheManor · 25/05/2011 12:05

I must admit to watching Made In Chelsea last night on Channel 4 OD.

There were 2 hideously screeching extras who kept saying;
"OMG"

A rather strapping chap merely looked at them and said;
"Oh...acronym". Grin I may start using that.

ZZZenAgain · 25/05/2011 12:07

I like lol

worraliberty · 25/05/2011 12:10

I think possibly the worst thing I've ever heard said out loud was my extremely camp cousin who declared "Oh Em Double Gee, I love this song!" Hmm Grin

Happygomummy · 25/05/2011 12:11

Could we redefine what lol meant to discourage excessive use?

Eg

Licking old ladies
Lying on the lavatory
Leaping over lederhosen

FYI YANBU

SarfEasticated · 25/05/2011 13:05

i wish people would stop 'boak' ing. I've never heard it before coming on here, and I don't actually understand it. I would prefer 'wretch' or 'heave'.
