It makes me cringe.

Who the chuff ever thinks about 'Laughing out loud', let alone ever says such a thing?

It is one step away from Txt talk and hunning and it makes me nauseous.

If something is amusing will a Smile or a Grin or even a 'Ha Ha' not do?

Please people, just stop, cease and disist.

OP posts:

Yes please I fucking hate it!! It's like someone has scratched their nails down a blackboard...

Toygirl · 25/05/2011 09:24

Some people new to move with the times. Our language has evolved. In fact, is it not now in the dictionary?

Toygirl · 25/05/2011 09:24

That should be "need"

ShowOfHands · 25/05/2011 09:29

Need to move with the times? As in only dress in up to date fashion, religiously use all new forms of annoying text speak, watch only modern programmes? That sort of thing?

Please tell me now if this is the case, I'm poised to burn my collection of books older than circa 1950.

Toygirl, it's not old fashioned not to like it. It's just bloody annoying as behaviours go.

Niecie · 25/05/2011 09:29

I agree with TheShriekingHarpy - there are too many people who use it as punctuation regardless of whether the sentence is funny or not which is really weird.

I don't use it much myself - only when something actually warrants a real life in RL. I am more like to snigger than LOL anyway. On the other hand I don't think 'laugh out loud' when I see it. I just think that the poster thinks something is funny - I don't analyse what the letters actually mean. Same with any abbreviation.

OP you may want people to use Smile more but I have seen people on MN take offence at that and call it passive aggressive when somebody clearly used it because they found something that made them smile. I have seen people insist that if you think something is funny you use Grin, like you aren't allowed to have degrees of amusement. You can't please all the people all the time.

But why are you so bothered by this - you seem to be overanalysing it. You need to lighten up and LOL a bit more.Smile

foxter · 25/05/2011 09:58

I have been known to use LOL, I would use ha ha, but I think it sounds too sarcastic.

mrsbunnthebaker · 25/05/2011 10:13

i do it because i know it irritates, lol

mind you, all these pathetic abbreviations on here, dd, ds, dsd, dsdfafdfa, smil - get my goat and no one cares!!! lol

NulliusInVerba · 25/05/2011 10:21

YA D NBU

"LOL" is infact the work of the devil.

I am so anti-LOL its almost a religion.

I commented on this not long ago, and how for some people it seems to have replaced punctuation.

e.g. "Hi LOL how are you LOL give me a call ok LOLOLOLOL"

AAAAARRRGGGHHH Angry

ChaosTrulyReignd · 25/05/2011 10:29

It's not farking punctuation.

That's all I have to say on the matter.

Except thank feck I can't hear what some posters type on here, as I blimming know that the lollity gang would be upwardly inflecting their statements.

And then I would have to leave.

MmeLindor. · 25/05/2011 10:31

I use it sparingly, preferring ha or haha or even ha! if something was really funny.

It's usage as ersatz-punctuation annoys me. "Going to eat cake lol".

Why not use a full stop? It is quicker and easier.

SarfEasticated · 25/05/2011 10:46

I hate 'lol' and will never ever use it. won't use ROFL either. seems so phoney. If you were 'ROFL'ing you wouldn't be typing. I think a smiley emoticon is just fine, and does the job nicely.

ChaosTrulyReignd · 25/05/2011 10:47

Mme you look different.

Confused
MmeLindor. · 25/05/2011 10:51

I had my hair cut last week

ChaosTrulyReignd · 25/05/2011 11:00

It's the Twitter that's confusing me - I knew I'd seen tge 'or' big before.

I don't like 'lol', but more than that I hate, hate, hate 'PMSL'... I have a very vivid imagination and that is just too much for me... Confused

RockStockandTwoOpenBottles · 25/05/2011 11:04

I don't like it much, but I do have an irrational hatred of text speak at the best of times. But, PMSL does sum up the situation rather splendidly most evenings on here after the witching hour
