i went in there to look ( indesperation) for a gift for a new mum - was thinking some gear or some clothes. WHat a hell hole. Naff logoed clothes, sterile shopping area, stroppy be-polyestered staff and a general air of tiredness

AIBU to sugggest that Mothercare has Lost its way?

Mothercare was pretty dire 10 years ago when I had ds.

Although I had an Urban Detour three wheeler which was relatively inexpensive and fab.

NoahFence · 10/05/2011 16:24

i think squeave, you need to offer a discount because you missed out a 're from your report.

Sorry - you ARE welcome, Mothercare.

I'll tell you how to fix it if you send me a large cheque.

BelovedCunt · 10/05/2011 16:25

myleene klass is the whiten tooth in the coffin really

NoahFence · 10/05/2011 16:25

OP posts:
bigbuttons · 10/05/2011 16:25

mothercare always really smells of rank nappy bins

squeaver · 10/05/2011 16:26

yy, I'd get nappies if I was nearby and knew I was running out, that sort of thing.

The clothes are the worst kind of crap.

NoahFence · 10/05/2011 16:26

this is HILARIOUS
all anyone can assosciate with MC is shit.

Had to go in a few days ago because I couldn't find water wings anywhere else. It was an unpleasant shopping experience. Hate the place anyway. The staff were rude to me when I was pregnant with DS, and I've inky gone in as a last resort since.

squeaver · 10/05/2011 16:28

Hmmm, what would Mary Portas do....?

Artisan nappy bins?

Organic woven Dora The Explorer pyjamas??

NoahFence · 10/05/2011 16:29

there must be some kind of " find your ideal pram" interactive thing. not someoen saying "well this has three wheels and this has 4"

coffee masking shit smell. ( that might work)
ordering /gift list thing

OP posts:
ggirl · 10/05/2011 16:29

they sort of turned around m&S
but i fear it has gone too far
lolol at huns dumping their shitty nappies before going to macdonalds

BelovedCunt · 10/05/2011 16:31

did anyone see evan davis talking about brands last night? polaroid where text book brand failure you can see how this happens

BelovedCunt · 10/05/2011 16:32

ggirl · 10/05/2011 16:32

actually if kfc and mothercare went together they could make a killing
they could shop and eat at the same time
whole families with their buckets
the smell of the chicken would mask the shite

NoahFence · 10/05/2011 16:32

that whole sentence is gibberish BC

Do you work in mothercare perchance?

OP posts:
BelovedCunt · 10/05/2011 16:33

gibberish!!!!!!!!!! pot kettle noah!

here is program

ShatnersBassoon · 10/05/2011 16:33

I wonder if it's part of an overall 'Mylene Klass Experience', and her home is lit to create an ambience of confusion and cheerlessness and stinks like a heaving nappy bin.

I think Mary Portas would tell them to put the big light on and tidy the dump up a bit. And plug a Glade in somewhere.

squeaver · 10/05/2011 16:33

In all seriousness...they should reduce the size of the estate. Focus on a smaller number of really nicely-fitted out mega-shops where they offer everything you need at a whole variety of price points, but with one thing in common - good quality. Retrain all the staff and get rid of the gum-chewing 17 year olds. Make them real experts (as good as the JL nursery dept ones). Cafe is a good idea, as you said, plus toy area, maybe even soft play.

We used to have a big Borders near us with a Starbucks in it. It was buggy-central every day, but they'd all buy things while they were there. Imagine what they'd spend in Mothercare on a daily basis.

squeaver · 10/05/2011 16:34

ROAR at KFC tie-up.

BelovedCunt · 10/05/2011 16:34

mary would ban using that horrid green colour (or is it blue) that they are so fond of

BelovedCunt · 10/05/2011 16:36

snigger @ kfc

our local sewage works has a mcdonalds opposite with outside seating

GastonTheLadybird · 10/05/2011 16:39

Not sure why anyone would go to Mothercare, if you want good quality you would go to John Lewis, Mamas & Papas, Boden, JoJo Maman Bebe, boutiques etc and if you want cheap you go to supermarkets. They have no market. The one in Brixton is possibly THE most depressing place I have ever shopped.

I think they need to look at strategy/demographic - who are they targeting? If they want to go for middle class mummy types then they need a new "face" - if they have one at all and some tastefully designed clothes (step 1: sack all current designers).

If they want to go for the chav market (and with the MK range that certainly seemed the direction) they need to be cheaper and have more fashionable clothes.

Plenty of good models they can copy if they can actually be arsed, unfortunately they need more than PR/marketing job.
