i went in there to look ( indesperation) for a gift for a new mum - was thinking some gear or some clothes. WHat a hell hole. Naff logoed clothes, sterile shopping area, stroppy be-polyestered staff and a general air of tiredness

AIBU to sugggest that Mothercare has Lost its way?

i can't think where our nearest one is
they will be gone in 6 mos
you heard it here first

NoahFence · 10/05/2011 16:05

Lol at stained carpets. Remember principles? They used to have them too. And strange scarves in changing rooms to out over your head or sum mat to stop you getting make up on the clothes.

dunelm mill

ggirl · 10/05/2011 16:06

i think dorothy perkins is heading that way

mosschops30 · 10/05/2011 16:07

Lol @ asda being boutique

If you think overweight chavs screaming at their kids is boutique then i agree!

NoahFence · 10/05/2011 16:07

I think it needs making more interesting inside. More welcoming. Not staffed by sulky women in their early thirties armed only with an nvq and a predilection for bad home hair dye kits.

yes, you pee on a stick, bounce round in rapture dreaming of apple cheeked children and silver cross prams - you run to mothercare and it all turns to polyester dust

NoahFence · 10/05/2011 16:07

Come on. ASDA is a destination.
It's where you go to shout at your kids.

first time mums will buy any old shit. john lewis have it sewn up. mc are so sad

ShatnersBassoon · 10/05/2011 16:08

I don't know how Mothercare is still going. Any fool can see that what it sells is overpriced and unoriginal, and the shops are depressingly dim and unpleasant (how do they manage to waft the smell from the nappy bin through the entire shop?).

BHS and WHSmiths aren't far behind them on my High Street casualty prediction list.

BelovedCunt · 10/05/2011 16:08

roar @ asda as a destination.

NoahFence · 10/05/2011 16:09

You dream of breastfeeding chubby babies
Till younrealise it's next to shit smeared nappies in a glorified changing room next to someone who thinks a fruit winder is one of your 5 a day.

OP posts:
ggirl · 10/05/2011 16:11

fruitwinder ,have bowl of them , tis one of 5 here

Sirzy · 10/05/2011 16:13

Our local mothercare is ace and so helpful!

NoahFence · 10/05/2011 16:15

That's interesting. How?
I'd always choose jl over mc because of the staff. And the smell

sprinkles77 · 10/05/2011 16:18

yeah. mothercare is rubbish. And I have used at least 5 different branches. Clothes all horrid with logos and stuff. Not competitive prices. Really stupid unhelpful staff. Poor stock levels. And I got DS a packet of those vests with poppers and the quality is shit. I got loads of gifts from there when DS was new born. Took most of it back, the ungrateful cow that I am.

ggirl · 10/05/2011 16:18

smell is tres important when it comes to shopping
more shops should consider this

capricorn76 · 10/05/2011 16:19

Mothercare don't pay tax in the UK as they changed their registered address to Luxembourg.

NoahFence · 10/05/2011 16:20

So stinky and bastards

OP posts:
TheCrackFox · 10/05/2011 16:20

Why do Mothercare shops always seem to smell? Is it company policy?

greencaveman · 10/05/2011 16:21

I don't know what happened to Mothercare.

I have a 5yo and a 3yo and I haven't been in there for years because every time I went, I was disappointed. Didn't have the right size etc. Last time I went, 2 women were in the car park saying "Mothercare NEVER have what you want, I'm not coming here again". Other one agreed. I didn't join the conversation but decided that it would be my last visit as well!

It seems a real shame. I honestly don't know how such a large store with so much stock can be so disappointing.

BelleEnd · 10/05/2011 16:22

I really dislike the clother. Unimaginative and dull. And overpriced.

Agee that h and m is fab.

squeaver · 10/05/2011 16:23

Here's the problem with Mothercare. 20 years ago it had pretty much a monopoly. Then everyone else - including the supermarkets - realised there was BIG MONEY to be made in gullible doting new parents. And Mothercare didn't keep up. So they went downmarket (not that they were ever upmarket, but they went profit-chasing) and sourced all their crappy products from the cheapest manufacturers possible. At the same time, JL, Mamas and Papas etc etc had figured out that people WILL spend £gazillion on a pram that looks like a 4x4 and captured the baby-as-an-accessory market leaving poor old Mothercare with the huns looking for somewhere to dump their stinky nappies before they go to McDonalds for lunch.

Your welcome, Mothercare, my invoice is in the post.

NoahFence · 10/05/2011 16:23

although H and M can be a bit of a bun fight

BelovedCunt · 10/05/2011 16:23

if most of your customers have a heightened sense of smell and tendency to vomit you might put a bit of effort into not smelling like an old ladies bathroom
