What time do/did your kids break up from school?

My son's school seems to be breaking up earlier and earlier.

Normally school ends at 3pm and years ago they'd break up for a holiday at 2pm...fair enough.

It then got earlier and earlier and for the last 2yrs they've broken up for the end of term at 12.30pm Shock

So he went in at 8.55am today, had breaktime at 10.15 - 10.30, lunch was 11.30 - 12.15 and then broke up at 12.30.

It doesn't bother me because I'm only a 3 minute walk away but don't really blame the parents who live a lot further from the school and don't bother taking their kids in.

So AIBU to think the school should stop moaning at these parents for affecting the school's attendance figures?

The schools don't break up for another week here

worraliberty · 08/04/2011 17:24

See my eldest in senior school broke up at the normal time of 3pm but the local Infants School and the Juniors too have started to break up at 12.30 the last couple of years.

When I was at school (back in the dark ages) we broke up one hour earlier.

DS broke up at 12 o'clock today but he always finishes at that time on a Friday.

Carrotsandcelery · 08/04/2011 17:26

Ours go on until 3.15, even at the end of term.
Do the teachers stay in school for the rest of the day? It may be that they are trying to sort the classroom out for the next term, returning books to stores, removing wall displays etc. I know it doesn't help the parents who have to pick up the kids in the middle of a working day but teachers do get very little time to do these things.
I met two of the teachers from our local school who were in working away one day this week, despite it being the Easter holidays, emptying cupboards, tidying etc. There just aren't enough hours in a teacher's day!

2gorgeousboys · 08/04/2011 17:26

The boys broke up as normal at 3:15pm here, the grammar school DSS goes to broke up as per every holiday at 1pm.

DD is at high school and they break up at 2pm at the end of each term. Normal time half termly though. But it is a village feeder school, there are at least 6 buses bringing children in from other villages every day. One of the buses can't make it until 3pm so those children had to go and wait in the library unless there parents came or they went home with someone else.

Ds is at infant school and will be moving to junior school in September and they break up at normal times. Junior school went to church this afternoon.

YouaretooniceNOT · 08/04/2011 17:27

My sons' school broke up for Easter today and i was Shock the school day ended at 3.30pm, normal time!

worraliberty · 08/04/2011 17:27

Fimbo · 08/04/2011 17:29

usual suspect - where are you?

worraliberty · 08/04/2011 17:30

Carrots I was wondering that but most teachers at the school work til 5pm on a normal day, so I would have thought the old time of 2pm at the end of term would've allowed them to do that.

pointydog · 08/04/2011 17:32

I think you should stop moaning about the school moaning at other people.

worraliberty · 08/04/2011 17:34

I think you should learn to read the OP properly if you think I'm moaning Grin

usualsuspect · 08/04/2011 17:42

Fimbo ..I'm in Leicester

mitochondria · 08/04/2011 17:42

Ours broke up at normal time today. I think they are an hour earlier at the end of the summer term.

yodelayheehoo · 08/04/2011 17:56

Mine finished at 2.55pm Confused, not sure why! They usually finish at 3.20pm.

cazza40 · 08/04/2011 17:58

Ours broke up at 1.30 normally it closes at 3.15. To be honest I think it's ridiculous and just causes extra stress for working parents. Not really sure what the justification is for finishing earlier. In fact I am sure that not much was done this morning . It annoys me even more as they are making a real fuss about kids having a few days out of term as holiday involving immediate letters and threats from the head about unauthorised absence.

muminthecity · 08/04/2011 17:59

Ours broke up at 2pm, it's usually 3.15pm. It was the same before the Christmas holidays as well.

worraliberty · 08/04/2011 18:13

That's the thing, I don't think the school have ever explained to the parents why they break up so early and to be honest, I've never thought to ask.
