What time do/did your kids break up from school?

My son's school seems to be breaking up earlier and earlier.

Normally school ends at 3pm and years ago they'd break up for a holiday at 2pm...fair enough.

It then got earlier and earlier and for the last 2yrs they've broken up for the end of term at 12.30pm Shock

So he went in at 8.55am today, had breaktime at 10.15 - 10.30, lunch was 11.30 - 12.15 and then broke up at 12.30.

It doesn't bother me because I'm only a 3 minute walk away but don't really blame the parents who live a lot further from the school and don't bother taking their kids in.

So AIBU to think the school should stop moaning at these parents for affecting the school's attendance figures?

Usually finish slightly early at 2.30 (instead of 3.15) but today finished at 1.30???? Teachers couldn't get them out fast enough!

Groovee · 08/04/2011 18:16

If we break up on a Thursday then usual 3.15pm finish. On a Friday usual 12.25pm finish unless it's Christmas or Summer when they finish regardless at 12pm.

We have every friday afternoon off in Edinburgh so quite like a Friday finish.

diddl · 08/04/2011 18:16

Another week to go here. (Germany)

School day is 8-1.15

Often finish at 11/11.30 on the last day of term.

TorcherQueenie · 08/04/2011 18:17

3:20pm holiday or not but its usually more like 3:30 we've been waiting for them before at 3:45pm

worraliberty · 08/04/2011 18:21

Really Queenie Shock

My son's old teacher had the class out regularly late...usually by about 10 mins and that really gave some people the hump...normally because they had other kids to pick up. Not only that, but the school would be the first to complain if the parents brought them 10 mins late every morning.

One mother steamed into the classroom, grabbed her child and his coat and steamed out again...causing her to get into a lot of trouble.

Worra I don't understand then. I know you don't know either but why are the schools shutting earlier? Are there any teachers out there who can tell us why/what they do with this extra time?
FWIW I used to teach secondary and worked til 6 every night, then more at home once dd was in bed, and I still didn't have enough time to clear my cupboards etc.

sharbie · 08/04/2011 18:24

12.30 school and college - yipeeeeeeeeeee

they were both at home waiting for me when i got back from pub lunch

worraliberty · 08/04/2011 18:26

Carrots it could be since the pubs started all day opening hours Wink

No seriously, I don't know but I'm going to ask after the holidays if I remember.

I don't know why we finish early. (teacher)
No good reason as far as I can see.

curlycat · 08/04/2011 20:08

Ours broke up at the usual time 3.15pm LAST Friday for 2 weeks. They go back on the monday for 4 days then are off the Friday/Monday for the Easter weekend. Go back the Tuesday for 3 days then are off the Friday for the wedding then the Monday May bank holiday. EIGHT whole days they are at school in April!!!!!

Jewelscatching · 08/04/2011 20:08

My dc broke up last friday at 12. They have all their hols a week or two out of sync with other schools to allow cheaper breaks for everyone. This saving covers a terms fees :)

It's bloody thoughtless when they end school early at the end of term..what about those of us who work full time and can't ever get there that early?
i really struggled with this yesterday.
School seems to think nobody has anything else to do apart from fit in with all their weird time changes Hmm

easterbunnyhopsback · 08/04/2011 20:13

We can better that curlycat. We have an inset day on the 26th. Grin It's absolutely ridiculous. The children will have forgotten so much over those three weeks, at a very crucial time of year. I'm really annoyed about it. We could easily have had a spring holiday at the end of March/beginning of April, and then had the Easter weedend off. (Same holidays in total, but a more sensible allocation.)

curlycat · 08/04/2011 20:20

Easter - what i don't understand is why they couldn't have started the holiday this week and it would have taken in Good Friday as well with just the extra for the Monday. All this in out in out is a bloody nightmare! Even better our summer holidays this year are 8 weeks and 1.5 days!!!!!!!!!!

SteviesWifeIsBack · 08/04/2011 20:20

DD's Primary broke up today, usual time, (3.30).

easterbunnyhopsback · 08/04/2011 20:34

I agree curlycat - that would have been fine too. Someone somewhere had their brains in tinsel town when they were planning these holidays!

BobbiDazzler · 08/04/2011 20:35

They finished today at 1.30pm. They go back the day after Easter Monday, which is bollocks. They should have just given us the whole Royal Wedding week off! Grin

heliumballoons · 08/04/2011 20:38

DS broke up normal time of 3:10pm - he was however late back to after school club as the other school the minibus picks up from finished 15 minutes early!

He finishes early for summer - usually 12.30 and at Christmas too.

oneofthosedays · 08/04/2011 20:49

DD's school broke up today, normal pickup time of 3.30pm and they go back on the 26th of april, then off again for the royal wedding, bank holiday the following week, 2nd may and school closes again for polling day on 5th may. They're hardly in for most of April!!

maidbloke · 08/04/2011 20:52

Normal time 3.20. Broke up yesterday 2.00. Yep, annoying isn't it, especially when there appears to be no good reason. Just habit I think... :(

DontCallMeBaby · 08/04/2011 20:56

Normal time today. Lunchtime is ludicrous - they're supposed to be in school 189 days a year, not 187.5.

Not back until 3rd May ...

easterbunnyhopsback · 08/04/2011 21:28

Don'tcallme How did they explain no teaching days on 26th, 27th and 28th April? I think I'd be questioning that more than the half a day at the end of term.
