Fat free youghurts versus Libya

Maybe I shouldn't have logged on to Mums net tonight....but I have read many threads tonight re playground politics, re school-lunch box Nazi's, re frighteningly well dressed mums at drop off and am thinking......many of us are really a lucky bunch compared to what a lot of people are going through at the moment, tonight, right now...Libya, Ivory Coast etc etc.

And whilst I am not disagreeing with the sentiments expressed.....and I LOVE Mums Net...its an essentially fabulous place to share, laugh, exchange a moan, communicate freely, make a joke and to off load (which is oh, so precious) ....at the same time can we also take a moment to consider how lucky many of us here are.

Indaba leaves to put on her hair shirt and awaits comments.................

OK, I've taken my moment., and yes I'm luckier than your average Libyan (I assume, although that assumption seems rather arrogant in itself.)

Don't know what else you want me to say really. Confused

Ismene · 07/04/2011 21:44

you are always going to better off than some people and worse off than others. That's life. No point navel gazing about it every minute of the day. Life still goes on.

Point is that you are probably luckier that many people in your own town/city. What are are you doing about that?

DorisIsAPinkDragon · 07/04/2011 21:45

I think deep down most of us know we're lucky to live in the world we live in, it doesn't stop us stressing and worrying about 101 other things.

Not sure if YBU or not !

There's no space. It's all one word. Mumsnet.

TrinityIsABunnyMunchingRhino · 07/04/2011 21:52

do you mean that we dont take enough notice of the fact we have clean water, warmth, etc

because right now erm.... JAPAN doesn't or are you

just having a go at the fact that the government seems to be selling arms to countries and then 'saving' them from 'the war'

shitloads of people are worse off than me

I'm nice to people and I do not try to fuck people over

thats what I can do

I dont watch all the news cause it hurts too much but I know whats going on
and I would love to make everyone happy

but dont bitch about whether we care because you dont know

suzikettles · 07/04/2011 21:56

Most of us are luckier than the vast majority of the world every moment of every day of our lives.

YABU to assume that just because it isn't the subject of threads (and quite honestly, how dull and really quite pointless would that be?) that we don't know this.

Bringonthegoat · 07/04/2011 22:19

YAB daft.

Indaba · 07/04/2011 22:23

Please don't get me wrong....all I was trying to say is..... lets take a moment to think how lucky some of us are....nothing more, nothing less...honest Smile

Do you think we are not aware of the world ?

patronising much

Indaba · 07/04/2011 22:29

BTP

I promise I wasn't trying to preach. I'm sorry if it came out that way. All I was trying to say is let take a minute to think what we have. Oh, lordy....it all sounds too hippy for words....Smile

I work with 3 Libyan doctors, all lovely marvellous people who have come to this country mainly to escape Gadaffis regime. As you say it is extremely sad and must be very difficult right now.Maybe you should post a thread in current affairs??Very very worrying time for all involved with Libya.MN a wide and varied place though. This is why I love it,I can post on the funny/banal threads or the more serious ones as the mood takes me.We all SHOULD count our blessings,we live in a peaceful country, you are right, but MN is a parenting website at the end of the day.

catchmeifyoucan · 07/04/2011 22:32

When, and if, I feel like 'taking a moment' I'll let you know. In the meanwhile please do not presume to know that we don't all think exactly this and probably several times a day.

YABU

meditrina · 07/04/2011 22:33

YANBU, but it does break a major shibboleth on MN to say that each and every one of us in UK should count our blessings. The world view, by which even the poorest of us here is actually very rich and amazingly privileged, is flamed. [bitter experience emoticon]

SecretNutellaFix · 07/04/2011 22:33

Indaba- what makes you think that we don't?

I read the newspapers and sites, I have television with news channels, but I cannot affect what is happening everything that is happening in the world. So with what I post, it happens to be more mundane.

Indaba · 07/04/2011 22:35

and thats all I was trying to say is

  1. I/we all love MN

  2. lets take a moment to have a think

nothing more, nothing less

I really didn't mean to undermine anyone or disagree with the tenant of what MN is about...just asking if we could take a pause, to have a think. Is that so bad?

thefirstMrsDeVere · 07/04/2011 22:37

There is always someone worse off than you.
There are always people better off than you.

There are people on MNs whose lives are crap and they come on here for a bit of a laugh.

There are people on MNs who have fantastic lives and they come on here for a bit of a moan.

Its what its for.

MavisEnderby · 07/04/2011 22:39

No it isn't:(.

Have had several chats with colleagues and know am extremely lucky.

I could be in Japan,or Libya,or Ivory coast,orAfghanistan,or Yemen. We truly live in a sad world.

Gooseberrybushes · 07/04/2011 22:39

no, you're right. But it's a joy that people in the UK are so blessed they can moan about yoghurt, Most people here don't seem to realise how lucky they are though. Tbh.

Indaba · 07/04/2011 22:39

Am not saying no one on MN doesn't think about whats going on in the world. I know that to be different.

Am genuinely surprised by some of the reactions but can only take the blame if I haven't expressed myself well enough.

I didn't mean to make anyone feel uncomfortable.....if you read some of the stuff I have posted on MN here over the years some of its been genuinely trite.

My ONLY objective was to say hi...lets spend a moment to celebrate what we have.

Nothing more, nothing less.

MavisEnderby · 07/04/2011 22:43

Maybe the yoghurt analogy threw everyone:o.You could re-post with "Lets spend a moment to celebrate what we have:o"

Gooseberrybushes · 07/04/2011 22:44
