"I detest the words with every cell in my being"

That should say I detest the misuse of the words

Goblinchild · 05/04/2011 19:23

'yes the people who burned down the play area were wrong to do it are we at least agreed on that? '

Good Heavens, I have agreed with alotofchocolate.
Harmony is possible amongst the most unlikely of combinations.

BeerTricksPotter.

The irony of your insinuation that choc is stupid is breathtaking Shock

ongakgak · 05/04/2011 19:24

I think if someone on here used the word paki and then didn't realise that that was a highly offensive term, then they must be retarded.

See, it is just not OK OP, it is a bloody nasty word, with nasty intent behind it.

Using that word and other racist, sexist, disabalist words at another person, and the intent is to insult or offend is actually a hate crime. It is something your local Police will log and take seriously. We should not tolerate such language, and the clear intent in using it.

iwantadogbutarabbitwoulddo · 05/04/2011 19:24

my ex boyfriends brother used to call himself a 'nigger' and say 'yo nigger' to his brother. It was all in a friendly way and it felt fine. I wouldnt have used it towards them, though, tbh, because it wouldve been weird.

They were mixed british background.

I am not disablist, if someone shouted anything offensive to anyone with diabilities i would be fucking fuming. I have worked with people who have learning difficulties, i am not some ignorant idiot.

Look, I see what you are saying, all of you. But offensive words ARE BLOODY OFFENSIVE. They demonstrate passion and anger and frustration and ALSO hate/ discrimiation. It's to do with context as well.

Each word is judged alone- you cant really compare 'retard' with 'spaz' or 'cunt', it's not possible. They have different connotations and different uses.
Using all these words is casual sexism, racism, disabalism, etc etc. I accept that, but that's the case for m=MOST offensive words

But i stick to my guns that words which arent MEANT offensively shouldnt be taken offensively, even if it was a poor choice of word to use. A word is a word in a context. Context is as important as the word.

Yes but she couldve said they were raised by cunts, jackasses, dickheads. She wasnt attenpting to be offensive to anyone with a diability. She was jsut trying to say they were stupid.

Look im sorry. I shouldnt be going on about this. I have a tendency to go on an on as well.

I DO agree the word is offensive. But it just wasnt meant to be, that's all.

sweet2gilly · 05/04/2011 19:33

Maryz Tue 05-Apr-11 19:29:32
sorry, people who live near me think it is ok.

Exactly

jonicomelately · 05/04/2011 19:33

BeertricksPotter.

That is exactly what you said.

The fact is what the OP said was not disablist. She used a horrible word completely out of context, but she wasn't being disablist.

I probably encounter 'disablism' on a daily basis. It is an odd look, a smirk, perhaps a nudge. It can be worse. It is horrible and disgusting and I hate it with every ounce of my being. It makes me fucking burn with fury and want to hurt the perpetrators.

To get on your high horses and say this is disablist is a nonesense in my experience. It debases people's real experiences.

Oh, and I'll repeat what I said earlier. Not all disabled people are 'vulnerable.' I often think that mn users think disabled people are confined to autisitc children. You can argue, answer back, flick somebody the finger, even pysicially fight when you have CP, SB and other things you know. Mnetters don't have to protect all disabled people.

Other people may well disagree with what I have said but it is heartful and true according to my experiences.

SardineQueen · 05/04/2011 19:33

We had a thread on that recently though. Loads of people saying that getting a "chinky" was an utterly reasonable thing to say.

Like it or not many people don't realise how nasty some of the language they use is. When it's pointed out, most people apologise, a minority defend it. Many more people on that thread saying there was absolutely nothing wrong with saying "chinky" than those on here defending the use of the word retard as an insult.

And I continue to find the accusations levelled at the OP mind-boggling. Why is it not enough that she didn't realise and made a mistake? Why must it be the case that she is evil to her very core and goes around abusing people on the street? I don't get it. There is no evidence that the OP abuses disabled people in the street, nor that she bullied disabled children when she was at school. Where is all this stuff coming from?

Glitterknickaz · 05/04/2011 19:34

Ok. Replace the word retard with a racist term.
Is the sentence acceptable now?

SardineQueen · 05/04/2011 19:35

Who are you talking to, glitterknickaz?

alotofchocolate · 05/04/2011 19:35

beertrickspotter concidering you are all pc you don't mind throwing the insults around do you?

iwantadogbutarabbitwoulddo · 05/04/2011 19:36

Naahhhhh maryz

she didnt say 'retard' to a disabled person's face, she was venting. It is obviously different if you direct a comment at someone. I wouldnt say

' yo bastard' to someone who's parents werent married fgs. It IS all about context.

SardineQueen · 05/04/2011 19:36

I agree with you BTW Joni.
