To Really, Really, Hate That Word?

WhyDoesThatWordExist · 25/02/2011 17:03

Call me an old prude, but, why does the 'C**t' word exist? And why do so many MNers use it? It HAS to be the most offensive, crude, word there is?

The way I see it, it shows exactly what sort of person you are, if you think it's okay to use it? Or is it my age showing?

Go on, flame me.....

PortBlacksandGinLane - I am not keen on the wing of feminisim that thinks that using the C word left right and centre is clever or empowers women.

Swear all you want people, I sure as heck do, but let's not pretend it is either clever or for a cause.

SeeJaneKick · 25/02/2011 19:36

Yes Sunshine....DH says it "He's such a cock" or "What a nob!"

LaurieFairyCake · 25/02/2011 19:42

I use it a lot. And don't find calling people 'vaginas' offensive.

suwoo · 25/02/2011 19:52

portblack. Great idea, it's got a right catchy ring to it hasn't it. Two Actually's and a Cunt. So, who to play the cunt? Hmmmmmmm.....this one?

FellatioNelson · 25/02/2011 20:00

I don't like it either, and I think swearing has its merits, in the right circumstances. But the C word always sounds coarse and offensive to me - never funny, never witty, just coarse.

didn't we do this thread last week?

medicalmayhem · 25/02/2011 20:06

yes i agree with you fellotio

Psammead · 25/02/2011 20:06

As I said upthread, I like it. Not as an expletive, however, but as a descriptive word. That's what I mean when I say we should reclaim it - not to use it offensively as there is nothing offensive about a cunt - but as an alternative to vagina.

HenriettaFarthingay · 25/02/2011 20:11

Why on earth would you want to call someone a vagina? That's just stupid. And as for the actual part of the body referred to - well just call it a vagina, that's what it is. How childish you all sound. 'Ooh I can say more swear words than you can.' Pathetic.

SarahBumBarer · 25/02/2011 20:11

It seems to be the English that have a particular issue with it. Americans for all they think of our Anglo-Saxonisms don't seem to regard this word as badly as we do.

Not really bothered by it but it depends on who is saying it. If my mum said it Shock I don't tend t use it in RL simply because I am sensitive that many people do have a particular sensitivity about this word but I definitely think it about some people!

BitOfFun · 25/02/2011 20:16

Beloved Cunt is one of the best Curb Your Enthusiasm episodes.

angrygingermidget · 25/02/2011 20:19

Just a word. I don't get why people let a word really get to them.

Maud2011 · 25/02/2011 20:32

YANBU if you are objecting to its use as the worst possible insult.

As others have said it's a perfectly sound Old English word and I have no problem whatsoever with it being used to describe the organ in question... I'm also fine with it being a "naughty" word like cock or arse but...

what freaks me out is when men use it, particularly on each other, as the very worst insult they can hurl. I think to myself, WHY? None of us would be here if it were not for a CUNT, surely the most generous organ in existence? One that gives pleasure - and life, often at huge cost to itself? I think there's something really quite nasty and misogynistic in play there. And when women buy into that and use CUNT as an insult too, my mind really boggles Shock

janiesmum · 25/02/2011 20:35

if its only a word, why do so many get upset and offended by other words that describe race etc

they are old words too

FellatioNelson · 25/02/2011 20:45

Since I've been on MN (bizarrely) I've heard it more times than in the rest of my life put together, and I am becoming desensitised to it, but in RL it would still offend me, and more to the point, panic me - because it's something I associate with extreme anger and possibly violence. Whereas on MN it is bandied about quite flippantly.

balloonballs · 25/02/2011 20:47

Great post Maud!

usualsuspect · 25/02/2011 20:48

Its just a word, but I don't think I've ever used it in rl

mmsmum · 25/02/2011 20:53

CUNT Grin

Yes I know, childish and immature. But hey it's a Friday night and I'm being reckless!

LordVolAuVent · 25/02/2011 20:57

great word. vagina is far worse. lol at 'clunge', have never heard that!!

Maud2011 · 25/02/2011 20:58

I've never heard clunge either, ewww!

toddlerwrangler · 25/02/2011 21:00

I hate clunge as well. Ugghhh!

baskingseals · 25/02/2011 21:02

i like beaver myself

usualsuspect · 25/02/2011 21:03

My favourite insult is twat

bibbitybobbityhat · 25/02/2011 21:07

OP: I am way more offended by bitch than cunt.

I am 48, if it matters.

I don't use the c word very often myself, find no need to use it in normal life. I hate it when men use it in a derogatory way towards women, but then I find the use of bitch worse because it is used more frequently and more casually.
