To Really, Really, Hate That Word?

WhyDoesThatWordExist · 25/02/2011 17:03

Call me an old prude, but, why does the 'C**t' word exist? And why do so many MNers use it? It HAS to be the most offensive, crude, word there is?

The way I see it, it shows exactly what sort of person you are, if you think it's okay to use it? Or is it my age showing?

Go on, flame me.....

I would not not use any blantantly derogatory term in front of my mum. Still each to their own. The respect you show to your parents depends on the respect your parents have shown to you throughout your childhood I suppose.

tethersend · 25/02/2011 22:50

I'll sidestep your bizarre aspersions on my upbringing, peppa Hmm and agree with your point that what is acceptable in some households is not in others.

My point is that using the word 'cunt' in front of someone is not the same as calling them one.

I'm doing it now.

Maud2011 · 25/02/2011 22:50

Stayfrosty, going by original meanings pudenda is certainly more offensive than cunt. And yet somehow I can't see it catching on as an insult Grin.

bupcakesandcunting · 25/02/2011 22:51

I wouldn't call my mother any swear word so
I don't see your point.

I'm not sure if your comment re: respect shown to you in childhood was aimed at me personally, if so, you're wide of the mark.

tethersend · 25/02/2011 22:53

I think it was to me, bupcakes.

I think she called my mum a cunt Grin

RobF · 25/02/2011 22:54

I think it's because of the sound of the word more than anything else, it's a harsh sounding word. Other words that mean the same thing (pussy, fanny, flange etc) don't carry anything like the same amount of offensiveness.

HenriettaFarthingay · 25/02/2011 22:54

You know, something just occurred to me - all you who quite happily bandy this word around - how do you feel about your small children swearing? Is that ok with you? Just curious.

peppapigbutty · 25/02/2011 22:58

Tether. You can call our mum a cunt if you want. I was brought up with more respect. As i have already said - Each to their own. Grin

tethersend · 25/02/2011 22:58

Of course it's ok with me- DD just has to learn what the consequences of saying swearwords are; if she swears at school, she will get in trouble. If she swears around many people, she will offend them. Particular words offend more people than others. If she swears in a professional context she will lose her job. If she swears during an argument, she will come across as aggressive and risks people refusing to engage with her.

None of which make the words themselves evil.

HenriettaFarthingay · 25/02/2011 22:59

I see you in a whole new light tethersend.

Tether. Your mum is a MASSIVE cunt. Wink

I find minge more eugh than cunt. Minge. Eugh.

bupcakesandcunting · 25/02/2011 23:01

Nice passive-aggressive smilie there too, Peppa Hmm

peppa, I have made no assumptions about your parents based on a thread on the internet. You did that.

My point:

Saying the word 'cunt' in conversation is not the same as calling someone a cunt.

I'm not sure how you infer from this that my mother did not bring me up with respect. You are proving that you don't need to swear to be rude.

tethersend · 25/02/2011 23:03
peppapigbutty · 25/02/2011 23:03

There you go then bupcakes. Whatever floats your boat I guess! Hmm

tethersend · 25/02/2011 23:03

Grin bupcakes

rey · 25/02/2011 23:03

YANBU.

HenriettaFarthingay · 25/02/2011 23:04

StayFrosty said 'adulthood is different to childhood, is this a new concept for you?'

Not at all StayFrosty. I'm an adult, I used to be a child. I have experience of both, thanks. Smile

peppapigbutty · 25/02/2011 23:05

Tether. Read your posts back. It was you who inferred I called your mother a cunt - was it not??

HenriettaFarthingay · 25/02/2011 23:05

And a very fetching light it is too tethersend. I sit here myself in a dim light, the ambience only slightly ruined by the gentle snores of my better other half.

I imply, peppa. You infer.

You said "I would not not use any blantantly derogatory term in front of my mum. Still each to their own. The respect you show to your parents depends on the respect your parents have shown to you throughout your childhood I suppose."

You said this before I joked that you'd called my mother a cunt.

HenriettaFarthingay · 25/02/2011 23:10

Oh, StayFrosty stop making a fool of yourself. I asked if you thought it was ok for your children to swear and you're blowing it up into something it's not.

Mind you, you still haven't answered the question. At least tethersend had the decency to reply. You're just sitting there trying to twist words.
