To Really, Really, Hate That Word?

WhyDoesThatWordExist · 25/02/2011 17:03

Call me an old prude, but, why does the 'C**t' word exist? And why do so many MNers use it? It HAS to be the most offensive, crude, word there is?

The way I see it, it shows exactly what sort of person you are, if you think it's okay to use it? Or is it my age showing?

Go on, flame me.....

Thanks Balloonballs Grin

FellatioNelson - the way it gets used on MN surprised me. I don't use it in RL under any circumstances, as no-one has offended me sufficiently to call them it, and as women are often offended I would never use it in their company whatever the situation, in case it 'killed the mood'.

I've seen it used on MN probably for shock value, but found the verb "cunting" quite peculiar, and to spot that in a thread title even more so.

Twat comes close by, it seems, in most of the country, while some consider 'twat' a variation on 'twit'.

There was a thread earlier today about whether there is a hierarchy of offense when it comes to swearing. Made for interesting reading for those who are not easily offended, and while in some ways swearing might be described as an 'art form', I think I will stick with the less extreme forms - not because I am a prude, far from it, but because I can keep the most offensive words and phrases for secondary fire, if someone decides to up the stakes and swear back :)

hairylights · 25/02/2011 21:08

I use it. Sometimes no other word will do.

NetworkGuy · 25/02/2011 21:10

Agreed, bibbity, on the word bitch. Another I would not use very often, though if someone did deserve it, I cannot promise to never say it. I'm a few years older than you, btw.

peppapigbutty · 25/02/2011 21:11

OP I agree. Vile word. I have a neighbour who thinks nothing of calling her 7 year old dd "a blonde haired c**t". My dd gets upset when she hears her friend being called this. I just tell her that people who use this sort of language do not have the brains to know appropriate language to express themselves.

Flame me. :) I'm not bothered.

The only other people I know who frequently use this word are the parents of children I am caring for - in foster care.

LibraPoppyGirl · 25/02/2011 21:12

I don't like it at all.

All words are 'just a jumble of letters' but for me the sound of this word is harsh and aggressive.

I don't like swearing anyway but this word is a very harsh one that I would rather not hear.

Doesn't mean that people are not going to use it, of course, but that also doesn't mean I have to like it Smile.

FellatioNelson · 25/02/2011 21:20

I must admit I do use twat occasionally, (mostly ehrn I'm driving Blush) but I don't really see it in the same league as cunt at all - although why one should be so much worse than the other I don't really know. It just is, in my world. Confused

My theory is that women use it on here because it's a place to throw caution to the wind and push boundaries safely, and vent frustration without it impacting on how people view them in RL, iyswim. I don't like to hear anyone use it as a casual insult, or to hear a vagina referred to as a cunt in casual conversation. Buy sometimes on here if it is used in an attempt at humour, or in extreme anger and frustration, even though I'm a bit cats-bum mouthed, I do sort of get it!

NetworkGuy · 25/02/2011 21:24

Oh, you reminded me, bibbity, of a summer day in 2009, while walking through a park, a yob slob youth told his girl'friend' she was a "fucking bitch" and I told him to apologise, first to her, and as a secondary reason, because there were youngsters running around playing with a ball.

He initially refused, with a silly 'you wanker' attitude, and I then said to his girlfriend "You can do better than spend time with a loser like this"(looking down my nose at him).

She smiled, he went red, and I expected him to get a bit nasty. I think he might have wanted to "have a go" and while I wear glasses (but photochromic, so just looked like sunglasses) and would never be described as 'all muscle' I think he knew that he might get away with a punch or kick, but if I came down on him, my 15+ stone would definitely cause him some pain.

He apologised to his girlfriend, which she accepted, and as I turned to walk away, I saw him giving me a V sign, at which point I did grab his arm, and twisted firmly. He looked like he might have cried, and I said that I take no cheek from youngsters like him, and to get out of my sight.

It wasn't anything serious, but for all he knew I might have been trained in the military (I was considering the navy at one stage). I am no violent menace, and find saying something very quietly so one is not drawing attention to a threat can be far more effective than actually using violence, which could end up in court.

PaulaYatesbiggestfan · 25/02/2011 21:28

i loathe it

i think of it as a women haters word

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 25/02/2011 21:33

NetworkGuy... You were very lucky not to have been reported for what you did. You intervened in a situation that didn't concern you, provoked him and took yourself down to his level. You seem quite proud of what you did too. Hmm

I have no opinion really aside from a natural dislike of banning.

I do find it interesting that the only vaguely moderated place on the internet that i have ever come across that it is tolerated is mumsnet.

Go mumsnet !

FabbyChic · 25/02/2011 21:49

I don't see twat as a swear word.

ToughShit · 25/02/2011 22:00

i'd rather be called a cunt than a cow tbh

dexifehatz · 25/02/2011 22:04

Cunt actually means narrow alley.Fuck means to sow seeds.Shit comes from shitten which is Anglo Saxon for earth or mud.

bupcakesandcunting · 25/02/2011 22:14

I want to know "what sort of person" OP has decided uses the word? Hmm

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 25/02/2011 22:14

"An alternative to this word is the t-word, which comes from an Old Norse word for cut or slit. Pronounced to rhyme with 'hat', or, in some regions, 'pot', it is widely used in the UK as a slightly more expressive form of 'twit'3 or 'idiot', and it seems likely that many of the people using it do not know what it means, or at least choose not to think about it. They are in good company. Robert Browning clearly didn't when he wrote the following lines in Pippa Passes:

Then owls and bats
Cowls and twats
Monks and nuns in a cloister's moods,
Adjourn to the oak-stump pantry.
However it is probable that he was misled by a poem printed around 1660 when that well known and scurrilous poet Anon stated:

They talked of his having a Cardinal's Hat,
They'd send him as soon an Old Nun's Twat.
Which appears to be why Browning thought it meant a piece of nun's clothing, specifically a wimple; and is a clear lesson to us all to check words we don't understand in a dictionary, and not to infer meaning from context."

I remember distinctly using the word twat - meaning it as "twit" in front of my parents...........and good a good solid rolicking from them - and then I was enlightened to it's mean

tethersend · 25/02/2011 22:15

Why does the word 'cunt' exist?

"It HAS to be the most offensive, crude, word there is? "

Bingo.

It's the best word for a bad thing.

HenriettaFarthingay · 25/02/2011 22:19

Like little boys in the playground...

bupcakesandcunting · 25/02/2011 22:22

It means exactly the same as fanny/ twat/minge. How can one word which has many other names be deemed more offensive than it's counterparts?

tethersend · 25/02/2011 22:23

Probably cunts, bupcake Wink

peppapigbutty · 25/02/2011 22:25

bupcakes. would you call your mum a cunt to her face? honestly?

tethersend · 25/02/2011 22:34

peppa, I would call someone else a cunt in front of my mum, but not call her one. The same way I wouldn't call her a fuckface. Or an idiot.

KingofHighVis · 25/02/2011 22:34

I hate all germanic words. That lovely latin is soooo much nicer.
