to be annoyed when "vegetarians" eat fish?

It cannot just be me who finds this irritating?

Someone who eats no meat, but does eat fish is a pescetarian. As a fully fledged vegetarian it bugs the HELL out of me when people say "I'm a veggie, but I eat fish" Or even worse "but I eat fish AND CHICKEN".....Angry

The problem is there are now so many of these "fish eating vegetarians" that people seem to assume all veggies eat fish, and when I eat out and ask what veggie choices there are, I get offered fish and the "true" veggie options are limited to perhaps 1 or 2 dishes.

I have no problem with people eating just fish but PLEASE do not call yourself a veggie when you clearly aren't one! I don't know why people do it, whether they think it's trendy or they are just lazy or confused about what they are.

I know this is a BIG rant but it really really annoys me. If I am a veggie and someone ask me "do you eat fish?" I practically rip their heads off (which I know is unreasonable but there you go Wink )

But AIBU to ask that people only call themselves vegetarians if they actually are one???

They aren't a vegetarian if they eat fish.

I was veggie for 17 years and never touched, fish, leather, gelatine, animal fat. I called myself a veggie in those days.

These days I avoid the question Blush.

reikizen · 28/01/2011 12:32

ha ha, me too. People look at me like I'm mad when I point out that if you eat fish you are not a vegetarian. Personally, I'm a lacto-ovo vegetarian but now I'm just getting picky. Wink

nurseblade · 28/01/2011 12:32

YANBU. I'm veggie and this really annoys me too.

purpleandpink · 28/01/2011 12:33

hee hee - I am a lacto ovo veggie too......I omitted that as I thought people might think I was a geek! Grin Wink

YANBU

They are not veggie if they eat fish and definitely not if they chicken, ffs!!

waitwhat · 28/01/2011 12:34

YANBU

My father in law is a veggie who eats chicken and fishHmm

gordyslovesheep · 28/01/2011 12:34

if you where not lacto-ovo surely you'd be a vegan?

are fish eaters piscatarians?

nickelbabysnatcher · 28/01/2011 12:34

YANBU.
it takes the piss out of real vegetarians.

Wh ycan't they say they're "demi-veg" or that they just don't eat much meat???

me too, btw, lacto-ovo Grin

MarshaBrady · 28/01/2011 12:34

ha at chicken and fish. yanbu.

BellBookandCandle · 28/01/2011 12:35

Another lacto-ovo veggie here (we all in our house)....yup it's maddening, but there are worse things in the world.

gordyslovesheep · 28/01/2011 12:36

but aren't 'lacto-ovo' vegitarians just - well vegitarians? (genuine question) and those who DON'T eat dairy or eggs VEGANS?

B52s · 28/01/2011 12:37

I used to be a veggie, now I eat fish so I just say 'I don't eat meat'. Don't call myself a veggie anymore, because, I'm not.

HerMajestiesSecretCervix · 28/01/2011 12:38

YANBU.

I had an animated discussion with the cook at our halls of residence when he claimed that vegetarians eat fish. He tried to tell me I was a vegan...

purpleandpink · 28/01/2011 12:38

You can be a lacto vegetarian if you drink milk but don't eat eggs, if you have no dairy at all you are a vegan.

OP posts:
AnnieLobeseder · 28/01/2011 12:39

Ah, but some are just lacto-veggies, or just ovo-veggies.

YANBU. I get driven round the bend when I'm offered fish or chicken as the veggie option. And it's all the fault of blardy non-vegetarians claiming that they are! RANT RANT RANT!

mackereltaitai · 28/01/2011 12:40

Totally agree. YANBU.

Hullygully · 28/01/2011 12:43

yars

Ephiny · 28/01/2011 12:43

Fish is meat IMO, chicken certainly is!

mutznutz · 28/01/2011 12:43

It's not as annoying as people who claim to be vegetarian because of animal cruelty issues, yet as they're not vegan they can't see they're still 'supporting' animal cruelty through using dairy products.

Hullygully · 28/01/2011 12:45

yars

KTisPG · 28/01/2011 12:46

Lacto-ovo here too. I always say I don't eat anything with eyes except potatoes Grin

MarioandLuigi · 28/01/2011 12:46

YANBU - My BIL claims to be a vegetarian but still eats sausages (because he likes them)

He does it for attention.

AnnieLobeseder · 28/01/2011 12:48

mutznuts, I'll have to disagree with you there. I don't eat meat because of the cruelty issues, but I eat eggs and dairy.

I'm not ignorant of the cruelty issues involved in the dairy and egg industries, and I have tried being vegan - it just didn't work for me.

I wish I could be vegan. But I'm only human, I am imperfect, and I still do what I can. Don't dismiss the stand I'm taking against animal cruelty because it's not enough by your reckoning.

mutznutz · 28/01/2011 12:48

Mario my 'veggie' mate eats low value sausages cos she says there's hardly any meat in them! Grin

mutznutz · 28/01/2011 12:50

I take your point Annie but 'not doing enough' is still sending male calves to the slaughter. The only difference is that non veggies will eat the dead calf.
