To only do a big house clean up once a week?

I mentioned to some mums at school that one day a week when I have the house to myself, I do a 'blitz'of the whole house, ie cleaning the bathroom & shower room, cleaning the kitchen properly, including mopping the floor, changing bedcovers, hoovering the whole house and roughly dusting where I have to. Other days I clean up after then children when it's needed and obviously do the day to day stuff like washing up, but that's it.

They were a bit shocked, ie 'you only do it once a week!!!'. Am I a lazy cow - or (sorry) I mean AIBU? Or are they all Stepford Wives? Surely life's too short??? Please agree with me!

YABU. Once a week is far too often.

They are just jealous that you don't have to hoover every day!

YANBU at all. I should add, though, that I don't do any blitzing at all. My cleaning lady comes once a week and that's when it gets cleaned. I may wave the vaccuum around at the weekend if we've been very creative but otherwise it's done once a week and that's it! If my cleaning lady is unwell, it stays uncleaned.

Honestly, housework is thankless - it only needs doing again the next day

YANBU. It works for you. Having DP do a big weekly tidy-up works for me.

yanbu - apart from kitchen surfaces and the toilets, our house only gets cleaned once a week when the cleaner comes

sounds fairly normal? although i guess most people also hoover in the day to day cleaning after kids but otherwise v normal imo, dunno what they are so shocked about

YANBU - in fact you are saintly compared to me. I have never hoovered my house - my DP used to do it once a month before we caved and got a cleaner. In my previous single/footloose existence I didn't hoover my flat in 13years and I've never ironed anything. We change our duvet cover about once every 6 months and the sheets about once every 3 if they are seem to be smelling. I do shower everyday though so am personally clean

No, that´s what we do too. Towels, sheets etc all washed once a week, vaccuuming and bathroom once a week. Mopping -urrrr- should prob be once a week (all tiled floors) but in all honesty more like every two. dusting same. washing windows and cleaning fridge and crap jobs like that only when really noticeably needed

i don´t ask/ don´t tell. don´t tend to get unexpected visitors so house always looks clean and presentable when people come over. that´ll do me!!

Some people spend many more hours cleaning their houses than others do.

You never get that time back.

Some people spend their time doing other things.

What does it really matter so long as minimum standards are achieved?

We tidy the house once a week, so that the cleaner can find the floor to do the cleaning.

The cleaner would probably raise an eyebrow at the notion that we had tidied up, but she doesn't see it before we do so...

YANBU but you'd sound more reasonable if you paid someone else to do it. Life's too short to polish the stainless steel everyday with baby oil

why on earth would you want to do it any more often than you had to? if you can keep the hosue reasonably clean with a weekly blitz then stick with that. no-one hands out awards for most frequent cleaning.

We do the same (in theory, although reality can sometimes be every 2 weeks). Day to day, we do the washing up, tidy toys away etc. I tend to clothes wash as and when it needs doing (most days).

Every weekend, we dust/hoover/clean kitchen and bathroom.

I do have to brush up kitchen floor daily though, as BLW son tends to think of it as his second highchair tray!

I only blitz the house once a week. I have a life to live.

Once a week is about right here too, apart from kitchen tops.

Lol once a week is more than adequate in this house, and all I have time for anyway. I make encourage my kids to help too.

Our upstairs gets a big clean once every six months or so - downstairs a bit more often though I doubt what I call a big clean would pass muster with most other people. [shrug] Not great I know, but I thought I would let you know how well you're doing.

Perhaps avoid talking to schoolgate mothers who are willing to discuss - and be competitive about - their domestic cleaning prowess. There are probably interesting women there too.
