To only do a big house clean up once a week?

MooMooFarm · 08/11/2010 20:58

I mentioned to some mums at school that one day a week when I have the house to myself, I do a 'blitz'of the whole house, ie cleaning the bathroom & shower room, cleaning the kitchen properly, including mopping the floor, changing bedcovers, hoovering the whole house and roughly dusting where I have to. Other days I clean up after then children when it's needed and obviously do the day to day stuff like washing up, but that's it.

They were a bit shocked, ie 'you only do it once a week!!!'. Am I a lazy cow - or (sorry) I mean AIBU? Or are they all Stepford Wives? Surely life's too short??? Please agree with me!

once a week?! I should be so lucky.

APixieInMyTea · 08/11/2010 22:33

I never do a 'big' clean coz the place just never really gets dirty enough to need it.

One load of washing a day.
Toilet quick scrub and wipe every morning by the first person to use it.
Sink and bath wipe down after use.
Dishes and surfaces wiped after every meal.
Hoover living/kitchen/dining room every evening and quick going over the skirting boards with the brush attachment.
Toys put away after dinner.
Kids room tidied whilst bath is running.

Once a week, bedding, towels, mop kitchen and bathroom, Hoover bedrooms (including skirting boards)

When it needs it, fridge, freezer, cooker and windows.

I probably do about 1hrs housework a day in total. An extra hour at weekend.

If I take the kids out somewhere I usually stay out all day and don't need to do ANY housework. Grin

Shock at changing bedding every 6months.

Has anyone else tried the Hour Clean? Set the kitchen timer for 60 minutes, get cleaning. If it's not clean by the time the timer goes off, today was not its day for cleaning. Once a week for a big clean sounds good to me. I can't remember who said it but I would always rather sit on a sofa than clean under it!

On a daily basis

I do laundry
Wash nappies and wipes
Load dishwasher
Clean kitchen, surfaces etc
Tidy up
Clean off highchair

A few times a week

I hoover downstairs and in the hallway
Put laundry away
Stuff nappies
Empty all bins
Clean and sterilise dd toys
Wash towels and put away

Once a week

Clean bathroom and toilet
Mop and scrub kitchen floor
Clean out bouncy chair, playpen and jumperoo

Every two weeks

Change all bedlinen
Wash bath and toilet mat
Clean out fridge and microwave
Wipe over cupboards and paintwork etc
Hoover upstairs in all bedrooms
Dust the whole house
Tidy bedroom
Clean the dishwasher

Once a month
The windows get cleaned by cleaner

Occasionally
I shampoo carpets
Clean the inside of windows
Wash cushion covers and throws from front room

I very rarely
Clean my oven
Defrost my fridge/freezer
Clean my kitchen bin
Pull out appliances to clean behind them
Dry clean my curtains

I do this yet my house is ALWAYS A PIGSTY! I live in fear of the pop-in and envy my friend's houses who always seem spotless.
It is only me, my DH and my 10 month old but it is a large old house that is hard to keep clean. DH is so, so untidy and messy and my 10 month old screams if I leave her alone for more than five mins at a time. She is also rubbish at napping so I get little time to concentrate on cleaning plus am so bloody sleep deprived that just loading the dishwasher is exhausti

cece · 08/11/2010 23:00

clean and sterilise toys?

MoralDefective · 08/11/2010 23:03

cece...i bet your children are healthy though.

ChippingIn · 09/11/2010 00:23

Are you sure they didn't mean

You do it once a week?

not

You only do it once a week?

These threads always get really funny - between the 'I do it once a year whether it needs it or not' & the 'I do it top to bottom daily and you are a slattern if you don't!'

Do what works for you and sod everyone else!

Kitta · 09/11/2010 00:31

I'm with ChippingIn, I did think when I read the OP what every week...........really do people do that.

I like to tell my self that I have far too much to do to worry about that

Jajas - I think it's fab how vile you think it is - I may even get a T-short printed up "Slattern and Proud". You've made me think about when we might next bother to do the next change though. Can't imagine either DP or I will be bothered for Xmas but maybe the New Year?

RoxieP · 09/11/2010 15:13

Haha! I don't even do it once a week! My mum does it once a week and she's one of those perfect women - so it must be enough. I only do it if it's visibly dirty and I notice, or if we're having guests round I feel shamed into doing it Blush

Patsy99 · 09/11/2010 16:24

YANBU

We clean once a week here too. Change beds fortnightly. Otherwise wipe down surfaces/dining table after every meal. That's it.

The variation on this thread is an eye opener. I will never clean my kitchen every day.

Ilythia · 09/11/2010 18:03

I have dusting 'issues' mainly that the major dust causers are my birds, who I can't spray anything near, so it just sits there.
Feck it. bit of dust never killed anyone, and it's not like I am hosting come dine with me or anything!

buttonmoon78 · 09/11/2010 18:54

I'm not the best cleaner by any stretch of the imagination but I boaked at Stangirl's 3-6 monthly sheet change.

I love the idea of a clean home but the process bores shit out of me. Can't justify a cleaner (to myself - no judgement to those who can btw) so have mastered art of nagging persausion. DH does once a week top to bottom clean, I do the daily bits.

I have never had inclination to wash walls (WTF!) or tiles or skirting boards or cupboard tops or inside cupboards or ... you get the picture.

I am considered a very tidy person with clean home though so I must be good at bullshitting doing something right Grin

Stangirl · 09/11/2010 20:52

I really am sorry if I've made any of you feel poorly - I didn't know how shocking it was. One of my closest friends has a similar blind spot about sheet changing and when she moved in with her DH-to-be he asked one Saturday morning whether they should change the sheets that weekend. She said "no, I can't be bothered, I rarely change sheets but feel free to do so if you want" he told her how much he loved her and her muckiness. He didn't want a fussy woman! So you see - I thought there were quite a few of us out there. My friend is in all other ways a paragon of cleanliness.

TSC - actually no I don't have periods. Even when i did I never got blood on the sheets. We do have sex in the bed- but I guess we must be quite tidy because I do change the sheets if we end up with a wet patch.

buttonmoon78 · 09/11/2010 21:51

I am not fussy at all - you should see the state of my house. That's if I let you get past the front door (I don't like people seeing my mess!).

But I do change my sheets regularly. I aim for once a week knowing full well that it'll end up being fortnightly in reality!

MoralDefective · 09/11/2010 21:53

Don't worry about it Stangirl...they're all OCD Grin

Meglet · 09/11/2010 21:53

Once a week Hmm.

Once a month more like.

classydiva · 09/11/2010 21:56

When I worked 12 hour days and had two kids one of 7 and one of 2.5 I kept the house really clean during the week, done washing still and stuff but totally spring cleaned on Sundays.

The house was always tidy, never any toys in the lounge cos I wouldn't have it. But always washing up on the drainer needing to be put away and ironing needing doing.

If you work one day a week is all you can do.

Now Im out of work I hoover daily and clean floors, the bathroom gets done daily too. The only thing that doesn't is ironing, hate it!

Guess it depends on what works for you, we all have our own standards and mine are real high cos I love a clean and tidy house.

Others think their houses are clean and tidy when in my eyes they shit pits, but its what you comfortable with.

Your standards are your own, and you shouldnt be bothered by what others do.

buttonmoon78 · 09/11/2010 21:58

I love my 'shit pit' (classy terminology classydiva)

Though, I'm sorry, I would still judge the whole mingy sheets thing...

RoxieP · 09/11/2010 22:06

If it smells or looks dirty I do it. If it doesn't I don't! Sheets start to "feel" dirty to me, so I do them about once a week. Love the feel of clean sheets.
