To only do a big house clean up once a week?

MooMooFarm · 08/11/2010 20:58

I mentioned to some mums at school that one day a week when I have the house to myself, I do a 'blitz'of the whole house, ie cleaning the bathroom & shower room, cleaning the kitchen properly, including mopping the floor, changing bedcovers, hoovering the whole house and roughly dusting where I have to. Other days I clean up after then children when it's needed and obviously do the day to day stuff like washing up, but that's it.

They were a bit shocked, ie 'you only do it once a week!!!'. Am I a lazy cow - or (sorry) I mean AIBU? Or are they all Stepford Wives? Surely life's too short??? Please agree with me!

Stangirl could name change to "stain girl"Wink

Joolyjoolyjoo · 08/11/2010 21:16

YANBU. But personally I hate spending time on a big blitz, so prefer to grit my teeth and do one "area" a day properly, then do a general tidy/ hoover each day, just to avoid that marathon cleaning session, as I detest housework so much.

You probably do a similar amount of cleaning to a lot of other people, just that you do it in a one-r.

Ilythia · 08/11/2010 21:16

YANBU, if I didn't have birds I wouldn't need to hoover everyday, and even though I do, I don't.
Life is too short.

Kitchen gets done every day with washing up and wipe down, everything else can wait.

MrsNonSmoker · 08/11/2010 21:17

If you tell people what you do, you usually get a gaggle of very nice mums who will be shocked, gives them the chance to feel superior. Listen, I have ironing here that doesn't actually fit the children any more and I only change the bed when the dog hairs get too obvious. Life eh? Grin

GoldenHaze · 08/11/2010 21:20

YANBU.

Unfortunately I have to sweep and hoover every day, but that's all part of having a houseful of animals!

AuntiePickleBottom · 08/11/2010 21:20

My extra cleaning i do the whole room from top to bottom
Monday ~ basic clean
tuesday ~ bathroom +basic clean
wednesday ~ living room +basic clean
thursday ~ kitchen +basic clean
friday ~ basic clean
saturday ~ bedrooms and hoovering (only got carpets upstairs)

it must be hard and tiring to do everything in 1 day

MrsMoosickle · 08/11/2010 21:21

Grin at onceamai

AuntiePickleBottom · 08/11/2010 21:21

Sunday all that get done is the dishwasher loaded and kitchen top wiped down

Imisssleeping · 08/11/2010 21:22

That sounds like more than I do, but if you search other threads some people do a hell of a lot more than that.
Some people mop and vac every day !!!!!!
Wash towels every day !!!!!
and other things that I can't remember cos I don't do them !!

happybubblebrain · 08/11/2010 21:26

I clean the house properly every 3 weeks. I don't do it until it really looks like it needs doing. I think I like housework a lot less than most people and put it off until I can't stand it anymore. Everyone who comes round always thinks it looks fine, as I'm quite neat and tidy. Life is far to short to spend cleaning. Life is far far to short to spend worrying about what others think about your cleaning.

Stangirl · 08/11/2010 21:28

Jajas - I assure you I'm not joking. In fact I'm trying to remember when we last changed the sheets and I think it was when we left for our summer holiday so they would be nice and fresh when we returned - so that was end July. I usually sleep in a nightie and DP in boxers and a T-shirt and I often have a bath before I go to bed - so it just doesn't get dirty quickly.

I do change the sheets on our other beds for visitors though every time someone different comes to visit.

AuntiePickleBottom · 08/11/2010 21:30

stangirl, i am sorry but 3-4 month without changing bedlinen is shocking

MooMooFarm · 08/11/2010 21:33

Auntiepickle - yes its a pain doing it all at once, but I only have one day off a week and I'm buggered if I'm doing housework at the weekend (other than the little day to day bits).

I don't think the mums were being ironic - they are all a bit posh, unlike me.

I never do a full 'clean' of the house, I run around with the hoover whenever I can't see the floor it looks a bit dirty/crummy/food on the floor.

Bathroom is done never rarely, or when the DDs come in past their curfew :o.

Sheets and bedding is done once a week.

YANBU, some people have more time than others/can be arsed, life's too short to spend all day cleaning.
Not forgetting that some people have pets - I'd imagine someone with a longhaired flea bag animal is going to need a more frequent clean up.

AuntiePickleBottom · 08/11/2010 21:35

i tend to do housework the days i am working, so my days off are spent with the kids

WriterofDreams · 08/11/2010 21:48

Oh girls this thread has made me feel so much better. When I read on another thread a while ago that someone was hoovering every day I felt like the biggest slattern going! Hoovering gets done in my house once a week if DH is feeling very energetic, otherwise it gets done when I get fed up with the mess and make him do it.

I can understand mopping and hoovering every day if you have a crawling/toddling little one as it's not very nice for them to be wading through dirt, but other than that it's a floor, does it really matter if it's clean? Hoovering in my house is just to make the place look a bit tidier, hoovering every day would kill me.

Kitchen gets cleaned every day as it is used every day, bathroom is thoroughly cleaned once a week (unless otherwise needed), sheets changed whenever I remember to do it (perhaps every two weeks), towels whenever I remember, I don't do any ironing, dusting once a week (maybe).

Laquitar · 08/11/2010 22:11

Most of my friends have a cleaning lady every 2 weeks. Maybe when you pay for it you are more sensible about it?
Personally i like a good cleaning once a week.

I dont think the other mums see you as lazy, they probably meant that they do the same but little by little every day.

maktaitai · 08/11/2010 22:14

Hoovering in my house gets done when there is nobody sleeping upstairs, and nobody staring into the middle distance contemplating the futility of life downstairs... a rare occurrence tbh. I would die of shame if one in particular of my aunts ever called without warning, but otherwise, my filth is my own.

I do prefer a clean house, and think it's better for everyone, but we can only do what we can do.

SuePurblybilt · 08/11/2010 22:16

I hoover every day or so - long haired dog, DD with a nature obsession and lots of dust. But I mop the floors about once every week and a half, unless they get really muddy. I just wait for the mud to dry and hoover it the rest of the time.

Those mums don't dust their skirting boards every day, ignore them.

LadyOfTheFlowers · 08/11/2010 22:22

It would be unreasonable for me not to do some cleaning every day as we have 4 kids in a medium sized house and it gets trashed frequently.

I had neglected it a bit over the last 4 days and today could stand it no longer. I managed to break the back of it today and will be able to get back to normality in minimal time tomorrow as a result.

If I leave it, I never want to do it so little and often works for me and seems to allow me more time for myself.

TheBolter · 08/11/2010 22:23

Sounds about right to me.

MoralDefective · 08/11/2010 22:23

Housework and i have fallen out over the years...it's just so boring.
I clean when it looks dirty.

Was it Quentin Crisp who said that after three years the dust doesn't get any worse.
I NEVER iron.
Clean the bathroom when it looks dirty.
Kitchen is pretty clean as it gets used so much and i clean up as i go along.
Towels when i think about them.
Bedding once or twice a month.

Haven't pulled the fridge/washing machine out in years.

MoralDefective · 08/11/2010 22:25

Crumbs, just saw the bit about dusting skirting boards...Grin

ninah · 08/11/2010 22:28

rofl at ironing that doesn't fit the children - me too
I think once a week is a bit too often for me
