Not sure I can properly answer the question as my very extensive research has focused almost entirely on North and South. But I think it's a combination of the Voice and the Look and a general air of being (or wanting to be) in command of the situation. Oh and the fact that he's nearly 40 and so definitely a Man and not a Callow Youth.
