No- you will probably vomit. Metronidazole is one of the few antibiotics where alcohol is properly contraindicated.

holycrapballs · 06/02/2026 18:36

I wouldn’t, you could be really unwell and if you need the antibiotic that’s more important than a glass of wine.

Davros · 06/02/2026 18:38

Do not do it!

TwattingDog · 06/02/2026 18:41

Absolutely avoid alcohol like the plague, it induces vomiting!

nondrinker1985 · 06/02/2026 18:41

God no don’t be stupid!

IsThisLifeNow · 06/02/2026 18:41

Don't do it!!!

dove76 · 06/02/2026 18:42

Avoid alcohol unless you want to be ill.

Tigerbalmshark · 06/02/2026 18:42

Definitely not! You will be up all night vomiting.

MrsTabithaCat · 06/02/2026 18:42

No, you’ll be very sick

ASometimeThing · 06/02/2026 18:48

I had a bad tooth infection and was on both metronidazole and amoxicillin. I went to a party and drank (lots) and was perfectly fine.

I mentioned it up my dentist and he said it doesn’t affect everyone, only some - but they have to warn you just in case.

Happytaytos · 06/02/2026 18:52

Absolutely not, it'll be the worst you've ever felt!!

youalright · 06/02/2026 18:54

Most medications you are fine with the odd drink this is one of the few you're definitely not.

Same here. The first time because I forgot I wasn't supposed to drink alcohol and the second time because nothing bad happened the first time.

Davros · 06/02/2026 19:15

I was given metronidazole in hospital, no one mentioned anything to do with alcohol. I was discharged and some hours later had half a glass of wine. I felt SO ill, it was awful. When I mentioned it at a later appointment I was told “oh yes, we give that to alcoholics to deter them” (or words to that effect). 😱🤢 🤮

Destiny123 · 06/02/2026 19:17

My brother ignored Dr (me) and pharmacy (mum] cos he thought he knew best. Vomited his guts up for hours and hours

Flidina · 06/02/2026 19:19

Don't drink with it, I took it for a tooth abscess, whilst on holiday ,thought I'd be fine, it made me really sick, so much so, it stopped my pill from working, and I ended up with my 17 year-old!😂

We don't prescribe antibiotics to prevent alcoholics drinking that's nuts and would breed resistance.

It's Antabuse (disulfiram) we prescribe to prevent drinking

Metronidazole produces a disulfiram like reaction

ClaudiaWrinklemum · 06/02/2026 19:21

Nope. I had a glass of wine on those 15 years ago and it’s still imprinted on my memory like it was yesterday. 🤢

NeverDropYourMooncup · 06/02/2026 19:21

No. Unless you want a taster of going on Antabuse/an idea of what it feels like to be dying.

That's why you can't even use alcohol based mouthwash or eat sushi that contains a drop of sake in the dressing.

It's an alcohol free night for you.

Davros · 06/02/2026 19:27

@Destiny123 I’m sure you’re right but that’s what they told me, completely informally while chuckling.

Switcher · 06/02/2026 19:29

I had no problems drinking with it but I think I had about one glass.

nikamoz · 06/02/2026 20:03

No seriously, it could end with you in hospital even if you accidentally swallowed mouthwash.

make sure you read the label properly
